Limited audience 2 out of 5 stars.

I used this book in a course which was supposed to be an introduction to solid state. Know some basic ideas in crystal structure, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, advanced and partial differential equations and Fourier anlysis and then you'll begin to be ready to understand this text. Kittel's Solid State text is slightly more helpful (but only slightly). The book is completely devoid of examples, yet there are sections at the end of each chapter involving current applications and experiments in condensed matter physics and materials science. Exercises require a leap of understanding from the contents of the chapter before them. Some experience with a computer language may also be necessary. I wouldn't recommend this book for most undergrads.

Editorial Review:

This new edition of a well-received introduction to solid-state physics provides a comprehensive overview of the basic theoretical and experimental concepts of materials science. Experimental aspects and laboratory details are highlighted in separate panels that enrich text and emphasize recent developments.

Notably, new material in the third edition includes sections on important devices, aspects of non- periodic structures of matter, phase transitions, defects, superconductors and nanostructures.

Students will benefit significantly from solving the exercises given at the end of each chapter. This book is intended for undergraduate students in physics, materials science, and electrical engineering. This edition has been thoroughly updated to maintain its usefulness as modern text and reference.

Fantastic book 5 out of 5 stars.

I cannot recommend this book more highly. Difficult aspects are presented thoroughly for what often seems a cryptic field of study for those new to the science. Nearly all aspects of particle interaction are detailed from magnetic repulsion to quasi-stable equilibriums. Also detailed in the text is an excellent overview of Earnshaw's Theorem as applied to magnetostatics.

more relevant today than when written 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the starting point and best resource for anyone at all interested in ferrofluids. The text is rich with background theory, synthesis techniques and novel applications. Many of the topics and applications are more relevant today than when the text was written due to advancements in new materials especially in the areas of nanotechnology and biomedical engineering. You won't find a better resource for the price.

Editorial Review:

The behavior and dynamics of magnetic fluids receive a coherent, comprehensive treatment in this high-level study, encompassing electromagnetism and fields, magnetocaloric energy conversion, ferrohydrodynamic instabilities, and related subjects. Geared toward graduate students and researchers in physics, engineering, and applied mathematics. Preface. Appendixes. References. Indexes.

Editorial Review:

This is a textbook on quantum magnetism and on modern techniques in strongly correlated electron systems. It explains concepts and techniques that are useful in widely diverse areas such as quantum spin systems, the fractional quantum Hall effect, superfluidity, and high-temperature superconductivity. The book starts with interactions between electrons and spin exchange; the Heisenberg and t-J models are derived from the Hubbard model, and itinerant magnetism is presented as a variational theory. Superconductivity and charge ordering in the negative-U Hubbard model are described by pseudospins. The Heisenberg model is used to elucidate general concepts such as spontaneous symmetry breaking, Goldstone modes and spin waves, thermal and quantum disorder in low dimensions, Haldane's gap. The text emphasizes nonperturbative approaches: ground state theorems, variational wavefunctions, parent Hamiltonians, single mode excitations, the spin path integral and its large-S expansion, Haldane's mapping, Polyakov's weak-coupling renormalization, large-N expansions for constrained systems, and the semiclassical theory of the t-J model. Mathematical derivations are self contained. Appendices provide standard many-body tools including second quantization, Grassmann variables, generating functionals, linear response, correlation functions, Fermi and Bose coherent-states path integrals, Matsubara representation, and the method of steepest descents. There are guided bibliographies and exercises at the end of chapters.

Editorial Review:

This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the physics of hysteresis in magnetism and of the mathematical tools used to describe it. Hysteresis in Magnetism discusses from a unified viewpoint the relationsof hysteresis to Maxwells equations, equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, non-linear system dynamics, micromagnetics, and domain theory. These aspects are then applied to the interpretation of magnetization reversal mechanisms: coherent rotation and switching in magnetic particles, stochastic domain wall motion and the Barkhausen effect, coercivity mechanisms and magnetic viscosity, rate-dependent hysteresis and eddy-current losses. The book emphasizes the connection between basic physical ideas and phenomenological models of interest to applications, and, in particular, to the conceptual path going from Maxwells equations and thermodynamics to micromagnetics and to Preisach hysteresis modeling.

Key Features
* The reader will get insight into the importance and role of hysteresis in magnetism; In particular, he will learn:
* which are the fingerprints of hysteresis in magnetism
* which are the situations in which hysteresis may appear
* how to describe mathematically these situations
* how to apply these descriptions to magnetic materials
* how to interpret and predict magnetic hysteresis phenomena observed experimentally
