Very good book and very understandable. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Of the various radiation detection and measurement books available, this one is by far the easiest to understand. It is concise and does not ramble on with extraneous details. One learns the basic concepts and theory, thus allowing the reader to develop a clear knowledge base without becoming lost in disjointed detail. The reviewer learned from the first edition of Tsoulfanidis' book as an undergraduate two decades ago, and is grateful that no other text was used for the course. The reviewer also owns the second edition. The reviewer recommends that those desiring to learn about radiation measurements and radiation detectors strongly consider using Dr. Tsoulfanidis' text as a first step towards their education in nuclear science and engineering.

Editorial Review:

Assuming a basic knowledge of calculus, differential equations and some atomic physics, this classic bestseller enables students to select the proper detector, analyze the results of counting experiments, and perform radiation measurements following proper health physics procedures. Examples and problems in each chapter ensure that students understand the concepts presented. The book cover long-range alpha detector LRAD, pure geranium detectors, magnetic and electrostatic spectrometers, position-sensitive detectors, the LSL-M2 unfolding code, compensated ion chambers, self-powered neutron detectors, new protection guides, and exposure limits. A solutions manual is available for qualifying instructors.

Editorial Review:

Atomic Farmgirl is a wise, irreverent, deeply personal story of growing up right in the wrong place. The granddaughter of German Lutheran homesteaders, Teri Hein was raised in the 1950s and 1960s in rural eastern Washington. This starkly elegant landscape serves as the poignant backdrop to her story, for one hundred miles to the south of this idyllic, all-American setting lay the toxins — both mental and physical — of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. From horseback riding to haying, Flag Day parades to Cold War duck-and-cover drills, Atomic Farmgirl chronicles a peculiar coming of age for a young girl and her community of hardworking, patriotic folk, whose way of life — and livelihood — are gradually threatened by the poisons of progress. Combining a profoundly tender story of youth with politics and an unmistakable sense of place, Teri Hein has written a memoir that is part Terry Tempest Williams, part Erin Brockovich, part Garrison Keillor. In the end, she offers a rich and ribald journey into the universal mysteries of childhood, love, community, and home, a journey that confirms humankind"s infinite capacity for hope.

A must reference/text book for everyone in Space Radiation. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This text details nearly everything one need to know for a basic understanding of radiation effects on electronic components and systems. Lots of very useful tables and graphs that are needed nearly daily by the radiation experts as well as the beginners in the field. Andy & Len have done a great job putting all this information in a very understandable format. A must reference/test for everyone in the Space Radiation business. Dr. Michael K. Gauthier, ICS RADIATION TECHNOLOGIES, INC.

Editorial Review:

A handbook of engineers to fill the gap in the fields of high-energy radiation environments, electronic device physics and materials. Provides a straightforward account of the problems which arise when high-energy radiation bombards matter and of engineering methods for solving those problems.

terrific writer on the real terror in today's world 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Although now dated (1990) at the time of its publication this was the best book among several and continues to be so, or at least among those I've read on the Chernobyl disaster. I recommend it highly as an introduction for people who want to look more closely at the biggest ecological disaster and coverup of human history. If we could only convince the author to do a follow-up study on how to bring the UN-backed international nuclear industry to account, for their murderous lies.

Editorial Review:

The Chernobyl catastrophe has become a key reference point in current debates concerning the future of nuclear energy and, more generally, the protection and contamination of the environment. "Fire in the rain" tells the story of this disaster and of the trail of political reactions, from misinformation to secrecy, that followed the radioactive fallout around Europe. The responses of the governments of Europe varied considerably in terms of their openness and honesty. As news of the catastrophe spread, each government produced its own account of the events, all differing in their degree of secrecy and dissimulation. Gould traces the movement of the fallout and its ecological implications in tandem with the movement of information and misinformation, and assesses the political consequences of both. The result is a record of how those in power reacted to the world's worst ecological disaster.

good for the price 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is good for the price (most technical books sell for $100 or more).
It has a clear discussion of radiometric concepts.
It also gives some experiments for radiometric calibration.

Editorial Review:

Radiometry is an essential part of the optical design of virtually every optical instrument, and key to many applications. It is also used to measure the radiation of various objects. This tutorial examines both the techniques of calculating radiative transfer and the measurement of fluxes and radiometric properties of various sorts.

Very good basic book on radiation 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The author explains a lot of scientific and complex subjects very well. I learned a lot by his basic explanations of radioisotopes and radiation in the real world.

Hands down, the best introduction to radiation 5 out of 5 stars.

Mr. Wahlstrom has created the most outstanding reference on radiation for a lay audience that I have read. I keep a copy handy to help me find the right way to explain radiation to people who never had much of a physics background or forgot what they knew! Most impressive.

Editorial Review:

The disposal of radioactive waste is a central issue in the future of nuclear power and poses considerable technical, political and social issues. This book addresses these topics in an integrated fashion using performance assessment of the disposal concept as a unifying theme. Subjects addressed include: regulatory criteria; waste types, sources and characteristics; man-made or "engineered" barriers; the selection and evaluation of geological disposal media; the use of underground research laboratories; the movement of radionuclides in the biosphere; repository performance assessment tools and approaches; addressing uncertainty and spatial variability; assessing information from natural systems; and looking at radioactive waste in relation to other wastes. The book provides an up-to-date picture of radioactive waste disposal issues and will be of interest to scientists, engineers and consultants working in the nuclear industry and the environmental field.
