Editorial Review:

Providing a unique approach to learning the Code, the Illustrated Guide to the NEC uses highly detailed, technically accurate illustrations and visuals to break down and simplify the expanding volume and complexity of the 2008 National Electrical Code. By translating the sometimes vague, complicated wording of the Code into straightforward illustrations and clear explanations, this book provides a resource that will facilitate comprehension and application of Code requirements for beginning and master electricians alike. Material is organized logically, covering fundamental provisions first, and then grouping code requirements by the type of occupancy, beginning with one-family dwellings, and progressing on to multi-family, commercial locations, and special occupancies. This organization is not only logical but also reflects how information is needed when working in the electrical industry, better preparing readers for the real world. Its comprehensive coverage, innovative learning approach, and industry-based organization make this an indispensable supplement to the NEC, whether users need information on a specific area, or need to learn the Code from cover to cover.

Good Place to Start 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

While lacking in detail, I have found this book a good place to start when it comes to safety equipment and strategies for handling other problems with volatile organic chemicals. In this industry specialization is rare. Engineers need a place to start so that they can get the language right before proceeding to the internet and vendors. The worked-out problems are good but you will find you need to go to the source for details. As I said, a good place to start.

If this review was helpful, please add your vote -- Thanks.

Editorial Review:

For upper level undergraduate or graduate level Chemical or Mechanical Engineering courses in chemical process safety, as well as for chemical and mechanical engineers in the beginning of their careers who are interested in improving chemical process safety. It can also serve as a guide for anyone interested in learning about chemical process safety, including high school teachers, firemen, environmentalists, OSHA regulators, EPA regulators, and others. The only book designed as a text for teaching chemical process safety, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to the essential technical fundamentals of chemical process safety. Its emphasis on fundamentals is intended to help both the student and the practicing scientist to understand the concepts and to apply them in an appropriate manner.

Save your money 1 out of 5 stars.

If you need to buy the book because the author is your instructor, then do so. If you want to learn how to make sound, prudent decisions as a firefighter, purchase John Norman's "Fire Officer's Handbook." The difference between the two is like reading Dr. Suess and Shakespeare.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive text is an ideal building block for aspiring fire officers and an essential review for experienced command officers. Incident command requires background knowledge and application skills in all phases of strategy and tactics - knowing what needs to be done as well as the how it is going to be accomplished. An important element of this book is the use of case studies based on actual incidents to show the applications of the theories to real world situations. The authors' myriad experiences in all phases of the operational fire service are included to detail the command operations from the company level to major alarms. The book uses a clear, systematic approach correlating with the course objectives of Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education enabling it to be used by all levels of fire fighters and fire officers.

clear instructions and diagrams 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

With the electrical wiring around homes and commercial buildings, I'd always wondered about the governing standards used by electricians. How safely did they really do things? So it's reassuring to read this update of the US electrical code. The diagrams are well done, in colour. The clarity of the schematics and of colour photos of equipment like fixtures is commendable. Clearly, the authors are aware that the background of readers will vary widely. Some might be journeyman electricians, who will need clear instructions and diagrams.

The text also demonstrates that the NEC codes are quite thorough. And, as the narrative makes clear, never complete. Every year, revisions are made. While this might not be the computer field, driven by endemic change and obsolescence, here too, innovation happens.

Editorial Review:

The National Electrical Code® is the most widely recognized and accepted electrical standard in the world. Every three years the NEC® is updated to reflect the newest installation practices utilized by the electrical industry, bringing about hundreds of changes to the code. Significant Changes to the NEC® – 2008 Edition aims to identify and analyze those changes in a way that cuts through the maze of jargon to hone in on key updates that will affect electrical installations. For maximum comprehension, the book is arranged to follow the general layout of the NEC®. Each change is also accompanied by an illustration, as well as background information and a discussion of the significance of the change. As the most comprehensive code change book on the market, this resource will prove invaluable to electricians, electrical contractors, electrical inspectors, electrical engineers, and anyone who needs to understand the most important updates in the NEC® 2008.

Great handbook 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great resource for firefighters. I went through the fire academy and spent the past few years using IFSTA Essentials to study with. I found the Firefighter's Handbook to be much more entertaining and enlightening. The chapters read alot easier and seem to be written for firefighters rather than students. It's loaded with more fire service history and many more tips and tricks of the trade than essentials. Highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

The knowledge and skills you need - the way you need it. That is what Firefighter's Handbook: Essentials of Firefighting, Third Edition aims to provide with this new edition of our basic book. Consisting of the newly revised information that is offered in the Firefighting & Emergency Response book, this version of the Firefighter's Handbook removes the hazardous materials related content, providing a more affordable option for those departments, academies and schools in which hazardous materials is taught in a separate course. Current firefighting topics include a new chapter on large incident and disaster response, as well as new information on fire life safety initiatives, managing air supply and performing emergency checks, predicting building collapse, GPS technology, thermal imaging use in search and rescue, new considerations for terrorism response, and much more!

If you are freezing to death, burn this book! 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the second worst fire service text I've ever been exposed to; filled with misinformation, bad grammer, and sloppy prose. From mislabeling Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to misnaming FDNY's Squad 252, calling it Squadron 252 (I don't think the FDNY deploys any fighter planes), this book offers no practical and very little academic advice for the aspiring company officer.
In regards to the student workbook, most workbooks usually reflect their source text in both content and syntax - not here! Several of the questions in the chapter quiz sections use language that is so radically different from the text book, it is difficult to find an answer. This inconsistency forces the student to infer an answer, which often occurs during an exam, but shouldn't be part of studying. The lack of an answer key renders the book useless.

Editorial Review:

This text is vital to anyone who seeks certification as a Fire Officer. Using NFPA 1021, the Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, the text prepares the student for the certification process in all states and local jurisdictions. The NFPA Standard lists 25 competencies ranging from communications skills to personnel management at the scene of an emergency. This text, which addresses the requirements of the new 1997 NFPA Standard, features information that will allow the student to become competent in all requirements. Another Great Read With Valuable Insights 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The link between improving safety and corporate culture is made very clearly in this latest work. The behaviours of management are stressed as a major influence on culture and hence safety. A welcome addition.

Editorial Review:

Building on years of research and experience in the field, Leading with Safety redefines organizational safety as an activity that both leads other performance areas and in turn must be led. Thomas Krause poses the question, "What does it take to be a great safety leader?" — and answers with a comprehensive new model for understanding safety leadership as it affects organizational culture and safety climate. Leading with Safety defines the practices, tools, and systems essential to creating an injury-free workplace, including the role of employees at each level, special considerations for coaching the senior executive leader, and the two crucial aspects of human performance that every leader needs to know. Ending with inspiring real-world examples or organizations that have put these tools into practice, Leading with Safety is written for any leader who wants to lead with safety toward a more robust, productive and effective organization.
