Another great series 5 out of 5 stars.

I've rea all his other books and while impatiently for the next Dresden book to come out, I needed a reading fix. Decided I'd give Alera Codex a try. Was not the most impressed with what I had read on the covers of the series, but decided I'd give it a try anyway.
Very glad I did. Each one of the books in the Alera Codex is better than the previous one. Butcher has created a well defined world with the various factions and personalities. The characters have a depth to them that lends greatly to the story.
The only thing about the whole series I find annoying is something the author has been hinting at in the last two books, the Roman legion origins on a fantasy world. He hints at it, but hasn't gone into depth with it yet.
Butcher is only one of about 3 authors I will buy the hardcovers as fast as they come out, instead of waiting for the softcover.
If you like high fantasy, try the Alera Codex.
If you like magic in the normal world, try the Dresden Files.
Only David Weber and company and Jennifer Roberson are in the same league in my book.

Editorial Review:

After two years of bitter conflict with the hordes of invading Canim, Tavi of Calderon, now Captain of the First Aleran Legion, realizes that a peril far greater than the Canim exists-the mysterious threat that drove the savage Canim to flee their homeland. Now, Tavi must find a way to overcome the centuries-old animosities between Aleran and Cane if an alliance is to be forged against their mutual enemy. And he must lead his legion in defiance of the law, against friend and foe--or no one will have a chance of survival . . .

Graphic SF Reader 5 out of 5 stars.

Quite impressed.

I haven't read the book series, huge multi-novel fantasy series are not really my thing, but this has been intriguing for a while.

I have, however, read some of the earlier short stories, so basically knew the setting, and the characters of Roland and Cort at least.

This was really good. Lee seems to have adapted his style to fit this dark Western type background, with sorcery, mutant cats, witches and decaying technological remnants - a fairly bizarre mismatch of stuff that seems to work well.

I think I like the writing more in this adaptation than some of the stories, too. The old-fashioned American prose can get a bit wearying at times, but it appears to be smoothed a little here and is more palatable.

Boys sent on a mission of important that have to grow up fast, leaving an unsettled situation behind them and a war backdrop and seemingly evil enemies to face seems to work pretty well.

Horror, or dark fantasy, or whatever you want to call it, so things will be not nice.

Definitely surprised by how good this was.

Editorial Review:

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." With those words, millions of readers were introduced to Stephen King's Roland -- an implacable gunslinger in search of the enigmatic Dark Tower, powering his way through a dangerous land filled with ancient technology and deadly magic. Now, in a comic book personally overseen by King himself, Roland's past is revealed! Sumptuously drawn by Jae Lee and Richard Isanove, adapted by long-time Stephen King expert Robin Furth (author of Stephen King's The Dark Tower: A Concordance) and scripted by New York Times Best-seller Peter David, this series delves deep into Roland's origins -- the perfect introduction to this incredibly realized world, while long-time fans will thrill to adventures merely hinted at in the novels. Be there for the very beginning of a modern classic of fantasy literature!

Editorial Review:

One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

From Sauron's fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.

When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.

The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.

This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

Editorial Review:

"What if" scenarios are often suspect. They are sometimes thinly veiled tales of the gospel according to the author, taking on the claustrophobic air of a personal fantasia that can't be shared. Such is not the case with Philip Roth's tour de force, The Plot Against America. It is a credible, fully-realized picture of what could happen anywhere, at any time, if the right people and circumstances come together.

The Plot Against America explores a wholly imagined thesis and sees it through to the end: Charles A. Lindbergh defeats FDR for the Presidency in 1940. Lindbergh, the "Lone Eagle," captured the country's imagination by his solo Atlantic crossing in 1927 in the monoplane, Spirit of St. Louis, then had the country's sympathy upon the kidnapping and murder of his young son. He was a true American hero: brave, modest, handsome, a patriot. According to some reliable sources, he was also a rabid isolationist, Nazi sympathizer, and a crypto-fascist. It is these latter attributes of Lindbergh that inform the novel.

The story is framed in Roth's own family history: the family flat in Weequahic, the neighbors, his parents, Bess and Herman, his brother, Sandy and seven-year-old Philip. Jewishness is always the scrim through which Roth examines American contemporary culture. His detractors say that he sees persecution everywhere, that he is vigilant in "Keeping faith with the certainty of Jewish travail"; his less severe critics might cavil about his portrayal of Jewish mothers and his sexual obsession, but generally give him good marks, and his fans read every word he writes and heap honors upon him. This novel will engage and satisfy every camp.

"Fear presides over these memories, a perpetual fear. Of course, no childhood is without its terrors, yet I wonder if I would have been a less frightened boy if Lindbergh hadn't been president or if I hadn't been the offspring of Jews." This is the opening paragraph of the book, which sets the stage and tone for all that follows. Fear is palpable throughout; fear of things both real and imagined. A central event of the novel is the relocation effort made through the Office of American Absorption, a government program whereby Jews would be placed, family by family, across the nation, thereby breaking up their neighborhoods--ghettos--and removing them from each other and from any kind of ethnic solidarity. The impact this edict has on Philip and all around him is horrific and life-changing. Throughout the novel, Roth interweaves historical names such as Walter Winchell, who tries to run against Lindbergh. The twist at the end is more than surprising--it is positively ingenious.

Roth has written a magnificent novel, arguably his best work in a long time. It is tempting to equate his scenario with current events, but resist, resist. Of course it is a cautionary tale, but, beyond that, it is a contribution to American letters by a man working at the top of his powers. --Valerie Ryan

I really didn't like this one 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 8 people found this review helpful.

It all starts out with King Arthur's child hood. He wasn't really a king when he was seven through sixteen. It was just him playing around with his friends like normal people, they did not get into trouble a lot but there were being pretty good kids. The book has a lot of details about medieval life. More details than I care to know.
The real story starts out with the sword in the stone. No one could pull it out but Arthur. Then he met the Queen of Air and darkness also known as Morgan le Fay. Arthur goes through a lot like the Ill made Knight and The Candle in The Wind. I think it got a bit more interesting by then, but I really didn't care about the characters. I really do not like the book because I am not that interested in medieval things. I think the author needs to rephrase most of the book. This book wasn't to my tastes at all.

An Arthurian Masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the book that introduced me to the Arthur cycle. Ever since I read it three years ago I've been obsessed with the subject.
Even if you ignore all of the great Arthurian books out there this one is nothing short of a masterpiece.
I'm reading it now for the fourth time, and it just keeps getting better.
It's a beautifully told epic that will stick with you long after you finish it. White delivers a funny, touching, witty, tragic, and enthralling fantasy that may just open you up to the joy of the Arthur cycle.
While it's based on Malory's epic, White manages to boldly carve his name into the legacy of storytellers that goes back almost a thousand years.
If you plan on reading anything in the near future, take a chance on this triumph of English literature.

All Great Books. There will be a Final Book (#12 Memory of Light), Even with Jordans Death 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed all his books, I have read all published books to date (Books 1-11) I say keep reading, even though sometimes Jordan rambles on, and such, even what some say is a Average/Poor book from his. It still is head and shoulders about all written Series save a hand full on equal par. HOWEVER, I DO HAVE VERY BAD NEWS, BUT ALSO GREAT NEW FOR WHEEL OF TIME READERS, AT LEAST WITH REGARDS TO HIS FINAL BOOK #12. Please read the following passage all readers need to know both bits of information.

Robert Jordan (this is his publishing name, not his real)....his real name is JAMES OLIVER RIGNEY, JR. Here is a link so you can read it all(www.dragonmount.com/RobertJordan/). James Rigney (aka Robert Jordan) passed away in September of 2007 (last fall)....however there is still good news for all the readers. The whole staff and editors have the notes and spoken ideas Jordan left while in the hospital the last few days before he passed on. The Book will be named A Memory of Light! The family and editors have hired a Fantasy writer to finish the Series and last book. This Writer (Brandon Sanderson) was a personal friend, and was mentored by Jordan too over the years. He will also have Robert Jordan's wife... Harriet.. helping (she edited and helped on all the books with him). They say on their web-site that they are shooting for Late Fall or Early winter (Sept-Nov) in 2009 to have the last book in the Wheel of Time Series on the shelf. This will be called as I said Memory of Light and will be book 12 and will finish the Wheel of Time. This is what they our saying at least, and they know the book might be BIG, and very hard to get all plots and everything in place...... so the Last Battle can be fought....but they will do it, so they say. I really enjoyed all the books, and I know with all the help from his wife (who knows a man better then his wife) this will be worthy of Robert Jordan's Memory and Life.

Editorial Review:

This box set of paperbacks includes the first three books in Robert Jordan's bestselling epic fantasy series, the Wheel of Time. No saga since Tolkien's Lord of the Rings has evoked such fervor among readers. In the first Wheel of Time book, The Eye of the World, Jordan introduces a world broken by phenomenal power and threatened by engulfing shadow. In The Great Hunt, our hero, Rand al'Thor, begins his epic journeys with a quest for the lost Horn of Valere, which promises to raise long-dead Heroes of Legend. And in The Dragon Reborn, Rand's destiny begins to take shape as his followers flock to him, and the world descends further into darkness. This box set is a great way to begin exploring the world of the Wheel of Time. But don't stop here, the second set awaits!

The series hits stride in this sequel 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read all 3 books in this series last weekend. The third novel evolves Cassandra Palmer into a character with humor and an inner dialog of snappy remarks.

John Pritkin, War Mage, has become the reliable side-kick. Who would've thought? And still on the Team, a ghost who was killed over cheating at cards.

In this sequel, Cassandra Palmer, clairvoyant, is the Pythia (based on Greek mythology, the story of Apollo and the Oracle.) Cassie hasn't had the training to know all her powers. One of Cassie's powers is the ability to shift through time and space, within limits, and the ability to bring one or two friends along for the ride.

A geis spell, connects her sexually to a Master Vampire. She searches for the counter-spell, before the geis destroys the Master Vampire and his dependents.

She continues the hunt for Tony, a Vampire mobster, who has captured the soul of Cassandra's Dad.

Cassie's to-do list is complicated by Pixies, Gargoyles, War Mages, Rasputin, Dark Circle Mages, Light Circle Mages, Incubi, Satyrs, Incubi-Satyr hybrids, shrunken heads. Etc.

This book offers a new perspective on the Vampire genre.

There were a couple of reveals in the plot I didn't see coming.

Editorial Review:

Cassandra Palmer may be the world's chief clairvoyant, but she's still magically bound to a master vampire. Only an ancient book called the Codex Merlini possesses the incantation to free Cassie-but harnessing its limitless power could endanger the world...

MaryJanice Delivers another installment of her Queen Betsy stories.
I really liked this book. I loved when the werewolves came, and how she talked to them "Dildo breath." and other catchy lines. I laughed out loud a few times.

I liked that Betsy and Sinclair finally tied the knot.
Jessica being cured was really cool. I didn' think she'd die--but how she was cured was unpredictable.

I can't wait until undead and unworthy.

An Uneasy read 4 out of 5 stars.

I liked this book because I like all the books in this series, but I did not think this was the strongest one of the bunch. I thought it could be a little longer with a slightly more indepth plot line. I thought a few things were not explained fully in this book. Hopefully the next will be as good if not better then the first couple of the series...Ms. Davidson will hopefully regain her stride, because it was a bit off with this book.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times bestselling series.

With her wedding fast approaching, cold feet don't come as a surprise to Betsy Taylor-especially with an undead groom. But when her fiancŽ and most of her loved ones go missing, it's up to Betsy to find them-and whoever is behind the disappearances.

Lovely and enticing 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I loved the three previous books that I grabbed this one off the shelf immediately. I found that this book like the others picks up pretty close where the others left off. I also love how Galenorn writes each book in the prospective of the sister so that you can get a more in depth feel for each of the characters and how they react with one another and their own personal secrets. I am excited to uncover the rest of the seals, rearing of the gargoyle, finding love for the last sister and find a lost love for one, while trying to save the Earth from the underworld.

You can read this book independently because Galenorn does give a brief excerpt about the previous three, but I would not recommend it. They give too much background and foundation for this fourth one. Just the way I like them.
