The Best..............Ever. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think my title to this little review says it all. I've read Marvel comic works by Neil Gaiman before, and I have also read his novel "American Gods". This blows them away. It also blows all other comics that I have read out of the water as well. This may anger some people, but it's even better than Moore's "Watchmen" and any of the fine works by Miller and others. This first volume of Sandman was not just a comic to me. It was like a gift that Gaiman gave to the world. He may not have created Morpheus, but he crafted him and gave him life. The same is true with his little sister Death, who he actually may have invented, I'm not sure, and Cain and Able, the House of Mystery and the House of Secrets. I am talking really heartfelt stuff here. It's creepy, it's beautiful, it's haunting, it's lovely, it's painful, it's romantic, it's gothic, it's modern, the list could go on and on. It's just Gaiman at his best and I am really looking forward to enjoying the rest of the series. I would recommend it to anyone who likes good literature. Because that's what this is here. It's not just a comic, it's a graphic novel. A story told with words and pictures. The art is fantastic as well, but even without it, I feel that Gaiman still could have created a gem here. Five billion thumbs up.
Peace and Love,
Jake

Editorial Review:

"Wake up, sir. We're here." It's a simple enough opening line--although not many would have guessed back in 1991 that this would lead to one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comics of the second half of the century.

In Preludes and Nocturnes, Neil Gaiman weaves the story of a man interested in capturing the physical manifestation of Death but who instead captures the King of Dreams. By Gaiman's own admission there's a lot in this first collection that is awkward and ungainly--which is not to say there are not frequent moments of greatness here. The chapter "24 Hours" is worth the price of the book alone; it stands as one of the most chilling examples of horror in comics. And let's not underestimate Gaiman's achievement of personifying Death as a perky, overly cheery, cute goth girl! All in all, I greatly prefer the roguish breaking of new ground in this book to the often dull precision of the concluding volumes of the Sandman series. --Jim Pascoe

Editorial Review:

Let's get something clear right up front.

I'm not Harry Dresden.

Harry's a wizard. A genuine, honest-to-goodness wizard. He's Gandalf on crack and an IV of Red Bull, with a big leather coat and a .44 revolver in his pocket. He'll spit in the eye of gods and demons alike if he thinks it needs to be done, and to hell with the consequences--and yet somehow my little brother manages to remain a decent human being.

I'll be damned if I know how.

But then, I'll be damned regardless.
My name is Thomas Raith, and I'm a monster.

So begins "Backup," a twelve thousand word novelette set in Jim Butcher s ultra-popular Dresden Files series. This time Harry's in trouble he knows nothing about, and it's up to his big brother Thomas to track him down and solve those little life-threatening difficulties without his little brother even noticing.

Not bad... but the stories should have been short stories, not to be continued... 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed this book, specially the story of Alpha and Omega, but I didn't like the fact that the short stories were publicity for you to get the book if you wanted to know how they ended. I think that a book of a short stories is a book where the stories should end, not to have a "If you want to know how it ends, read..."

That's the only thing that I didn't like.

About the plots I'm not going to talk as there are other reviews who offer nice insight on them, but there are four stories, the first one, ALPHA AND OMEGA is about werewolves by Patricia Briggs. That's one of the stories that are to be continued on a book.

The second one is about a Hellbound of the Fey, tittled INHUMAN and written by Eileen Wilks. That one also continues on the fourth book of the Lupi by Eileen Wilk.

The third one is about the Fey, tittled BUYING TROUBLE written by Karen Chance, and that's one of the stories that actually concludes in this book.

The fourth one MONA LISA BETWINING is written by Sunny, and is also auto conclusive, but it reccomends you some books in case you want to know more about the world of the Monere or about the demon Lucinda.

Sorry... I was looking for more paranormal stories, not just romance 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As another reviewer also said, I bought this because of Kim Harrison's participation, but I was looking more for paranormal stories, not romance. The stories are well written, so if romance floats your boat, go fot it. Otherwise, I'd look for something else.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

Never-before-published vampire stories by Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, Kelley Armstrong, and many others.

Suspenseful, surprising, sometimes dark, sometimes humorous-these all-new stories will ensure that readers never think of vampires (or birthdays) in quite the same way again.

In New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris's "Dracula Night," Sookie Stackhouse is the only human at the annual commemoration of Dracula's birth. But this year, the Prince of Darkness actually shows up-and finds Sookie to be a tasty-looking present.

New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher's crime-solving wizard Harry Dresden, of the Dresden Files novels, heads to a role-playing party to give his vampire brother a birthday present in "It's My Birthday Too," only to discover there are some bloodthirsty party crashers who don't share their brotherly love.

In "Twilight," Cassandra DuCharme, who appeared in New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's Dime Store Magic, knows she has to kill to live as a vampire another year-but finds herself disturbingly disinterested in the hunt.

Plus ten more bloody good birthday stories that take the cake.

Editorial Review:

In the mist-shrouded haze of past, the world of Azeroth teemed with wonders of every kind. Magical races and ancient beasts strode alongside the tribes of man -- until the arrival of the demonic Burning Legion and its baneful lord, Sargeras. Now dragons, elves, orcs, and dwarves all vie for supremacy across their scarred, war-torn kingdoms -- all part of a grand, malevolent scheme to determine the fate of the world of...

WARCRAFT

DAY OF THE DRAGON: A terrifying upheaval among the highest ranks of the world's Wizards sends the maverick Mage, Rhonin, on a perilous journey into the Orc-controlled lands of Khaz Modan. What Rhonin uncovers is a vast, far-reaching conspiracy, darker than anything he ever imagined -- a threat that will force him into a dangerous alliance with ancient creatures of air and fire if the world of Azeroth is to see another dawn.

LORD OF THE CLANS: Slave and Gladiator. Shaman and Warchief. The enigmatic Orc known as Thrall has been all of these. Raised from infancy by cruel human masters who sought to mold him into their perfect pawn, Thrall was driven by both the savagery in his heart and the cunning of his upbringing to pursue a destiny he was only beginning to understand -- to break his bondage and rediscover the ancient traditions of his people. Now the tumultuous tale of his life's journey -- a saga of honor, hatred, and hope -- can at last be told.

THE LAST GUARDIAN: The Guardians of Tirisfal were a line of champions imbued with godlike powers, each one through the ages charged with fighting a lonely secret war against the Burning Legion. Medivh was fated from birth to become the greatest and most powerful of this noble order. But from the beginning a darkness tainted him, corrupting his soul and turning to evil the powers that should have fought for good. Medivh's struggle against the malice within him became one with the fate of Azeroth itself...and changed the world forever.

OF BLOOD AND HONOR: The paladin Tirion Fordring had always believed the Orcs were vile and corrupt, but an unexpected act of honor and compassion sets in motion a chain of events that will challenge his most fundamental beliefs and force him to decide, once and for all, who are the men...and who are the monsters.

the best D&D style trilogy ever written 5 out of 5 stars.

I cut my teeth into fantasy with these same books when I was a kid. My wife had never read them so I bought the set for her. She devoured them. All three books are complete page turners. The Icewindale Trilogy that follows this set is the same way. IMO the author goes downhill after that. This set is a must-read though.
