Editorial Review:

The male thynnine wasp's extreme sexual enthusiasm is crucial to reproduction of hammer orchids in the wild. Hammer orchids have co-evolved to produce odors identical to those manufactured by female thynnine wasps. The male wasp's superb sensitivity to the scent of his female mate is the basis for the hammer orchid's deceit--in effect, orchids exploit the male insect's highly adaptive sense of smell for their own propagation. While pollinating orchids is a waste of time, and thus a maladaptive activity for a wasp, his mistake comes about because he must react quickly whenever he senses a possible mate nearby. Alcock suggests that, "for insects, he who hesitates is lost, although perhaps it would be better to say that he who hesitates often loses a chance to pass on his genes." This book abounds with clever explanations for how these exceptionally complex flowers came to be shaped as they are. The reader can explore many aspects of orchid biology and history ranging from how some species avoid inbreeding, to the origins of orchids from an ancestor that belonged to the asparagus family. Examining each component of an orchid's flower, Alcock explains how the various parts work together to produce the plant's minute offspring. Each element of an orchid, as quirky as it may seem, is biologically significant, bearing the imprint of natural selection. Readers can share in the delight that Darwin and all other orchid enthusiasts have felt in making sense of even the smallest of details of these most wonderful plants.

Walter made it easy and exciting !! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have seen reference of it in several publications and decided to put my hands on it. It's surely is a must for any terrestrial ecosystem scientists or ecologists. I would say, Walter's book is really just so exciting to read. Detailed in a lucid way with excellent sketches. Terrestrial ecology is also included by taking into account major world species. Easy to read and interlink with nicely sequenced sections and chapters. However, those specializing in tree physiology, Taiz's book may be better.

Editorial Review:

From the reviews of the 3rd edition: "the textbook of Walter Larcher (...) belongs certainly to the most successful manuals that ever existed." Photosynthetica, Czech Republic

"it continues to be one of the major texts in the field of ecophysiology." Plant Growth Regulation, The Netherlands

"This book is really a must reading for those interested in sustainable forestry." Journal of Sustainable Forestry, USA

"The book, should be on the shelf of any scientist, teacher, or student seeking an introduction to the field of plant ecophysiology that is also an excellent reference." The Quarterly Review of Biology, USA

Editorial Review:

This book is devoted to the structural roots of woody plants, with a particular emphasis on the anchorage, form and development of tree root systems. For the first time, a large number of papers on the architecture and biomechanics of structural root systems are presented together with discussions on consequences for tree stability in both forest and urban environments. The development of root systems using different planting techniques is assessed, with recommendations for the selection and breeding of forest trees. Root response to environmental stresses is discussed, with several chapters also focusing on the structure and role of fine roots and their interaction with the rhizosphere. New methods for studying roots are presented, along with modelling techniques and state-of-the-art software. Aimed at biologists, foresters and arboriculturalists, this book will provide the reader with an overview of current knowledge in all fields of structural root research, as well as presenting recent findings and new methods for studying woody roots.

Informative and comprehensive, great photos 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The book is outstanding. It covers most types of carnivorous plants, and has many excelent color photos. It has a section on how to grow & care for each type of plant. From pot size, soil, light, humidity, fertilizers, growing period and more.

A minor negative - some additional information would have been useful. I wish it had a little more information on the optimal pot size for the plants, some have this info, some don't. And don't expect it to have every complex Sarracenia Hybrid covered, although it does have a lot of them.

Ive read many (most?) books on CPs published in the last 50-60 years, and this one covers more, provides more info, and has better pictures. This deserves 5 stars, unlike the typically inflated rating. I use it to research any plants I consider buying. If you're interested in CPs this book would be worth buying. It's a steal at its current price. ... .

Editorial Review:

The mobile tentacles of the Sundews, the snapping lobes of the Venus Fly Trap, and the slippery, baited pitfalls of the Pitcher Plants seem the stuff of science fiction, yet these amazing plants do exist. Adrian Slack focuses on some fifty species, using photographs, line drawings, and diagrams to illustrate their peculiarities. He explores in detail the wily manner in which each type of plant entices, catches, and digests its prey.

Such a nice piece of information about Plant Nutrition 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I just received a copy of this book from Dr. Epstein. After taking a look at it, I must say that it is a great piece of information for those interesting in Plant Nutrition. You must have a copy of this book for yourself.

Editorial Review:

Nearly all the chemical elements that make up living things are mineral elements, the ultimate source of which is rock weathered into soil. In the thoroughly revised Second Edition of Mineral Nutrition of Plants: Principles and Perspectives, Epstein and Bloom explain that plant roots "mine" these nutrient elements from their inorganic substrate and introduce them into the realm of living things. The authors trace the subsequent movement of these nutrients into other plant organs, tissues, cells, and organelles, their biochemical assimilation, and their functions in plant physiology and metabolism. Treatment of these processes extends from molecular biology through global biogeochemistry. The text, illustrated in full color, is accessible both to undergraduate students in plant physiology, agronomy, horticulture, and environmental studies and to researchers in these and other plant biological fields.

plants from test tubes 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The presentation of the book is very nice. It's written in a way that most person with some limited sciences background will understand with no trouble at all.Book is very well designed, by chapters from early discoveries to the most advance techniques, and still easy to completly understand and follow procedures without any problems. Language is very simple and clear, and is not boring at all.Author has a good way of describing and teaching the subject, and have a way of keeping interested in reading and doing the practical side of the experiments.
Will highly recomend.I;m very happy in owning this book.

Editorial Review:

Acclaimed since its first appearance as the most practical guide to plant tissue culture and widely adopted as a textbook, this standard work is now even better. This expanded edition introduces new developments in biotechnology, such as genetic engineering and cell culture. It provides detailed recipes for propagating plants from more than 30 families. It explains clearly how to set up a propagating laboratory, from a hobbyist's kitchen to an elaborate commercial enterprise.

Editorial Review:

The 1949 publication The Structure and Reproduction of Corn, by Theodore Kiesselbach is an indispensable source of knowledge for plant biologists throughout the world but has long been unavailable in printed form. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the appearance of this important work, a new edition has been published on high quality paper that brings out the best in the text's finely detailed illustrations. This edition includes a historical introduction that illuminates the man behind the science, an investigator who applied the lessons of studies of hybrid vigor to create a revolution in corn breeding that transformed the economy of the American prairie states. This small, attractive book is a must for everyone interested in plant development.
