A Brilliant Analysis of Three "Key" Interrelationships 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As Sunil Chopra and Peter Meindl explain in their Preface, the purpose of their book is to help those who read it to "develop an understanding of the following key areas and their interrelationships: the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and [the] analytical methodologies for supply chain analysis." I think their material will be of greatest interest and value to executives who are now centrally involved in management of larger organizations' supply chains. However, I think their book will also be of substantial benefit to others who are directly or indirectly involved as strategic allies in those supply chains, those who can also help to ensure effective management of them.

Chopra and Meindl carefully organize their material as follows:

Part I: Building a Strategic Framework to Analyze Supply Chains
Part II: Designing the Supply Chain Network
Part III: Planning Demand and Supply in a Supply Chain
Part IV: Planning and Managing Inventories in a Supply Chain
Part V: Designing and Planning Transportation Networks
Part VI: Managing Cross-Functional Drivers in a Supply Chain

I was especially interested in the final part because one of the greatest challenges when establishing and then sustaining an effective supply chain is to take into full account the need to get all participants in proper alignment, especially when cross-functional resources to achieve to achieve mutually-beneficial results. In Part VI, Chopra and Meindl respond to questions such as these:

1. What is the role of sourcing?
2. How to achieve design collaboration?
3. What are the most important "drivers" of pricing and revenue management?
4. What is IT's role?
5. What does effective risk management require?
6. What are the major barriers to effective coordination?
7. How to build strategic partnerships and trust between and among stakeholders?

Many readers (I among them) will also appreciate the provision of a "Summary of Learning Objectives" and "Discussion Questions" at the conclusion of each of the 17 chapters. Credit Chopra and Meindl with fully achieving their objectives when they set out to write this book: To help their readers to understand the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and the analytic methodologies for supply chain analysis.

Bravo!

Editorial Review:

This book brings together the strategic role of the supply chain, key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and the underlying tools and techniques for supply chain analysis. Students are able to articulate the strategic importance of supply chain thinking and support their ideas with evidence that can be built using models.

Modern logistics - an executive summary 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After reading various textbooks on logistics, quantitative analysis and strategy, this book was very refreshing, in large part from the fact that it is a short and non-technical book. The title of my review says it all, this book is summary for busy people wanting to get som insights into what is going on in logistics and organizational theory . I got through the book in two readings, which is a very valuable aspect for busy people.
Still, despite being brief, it touches on most important aspects, and points you to further areas of importance if what you read here makes you want to change things in your organization.
So: Not technical, easy read, 4 stars instead of 5 because it is too brief to be truly useful for those that actually want to learn the subject-matter.

PS: The printing I recieved was a defect, pages 247 to 278 missing (Replaced by duplicate pages 215-246), ust watch out for that.

Editorial Review:

Logistics management is increasingly being seen as a source of competitive strength. Its effective use provides potential for cost reduction and the opportunity for increasing market share. The second edition discusses the role of logistics in achieving corporate and financial goals. Updated and expanded with more checklists, more short cases and executive summaries, this is an invaluable guide for all logistics and distribution managers.

Required reading for the new logistics professional 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Anyone working in the logistics and delivery field must read this book and keep it in your library. The book is all-inclusive so you don't need lots of others. This may help justify the high price.

Editorial Review:

Using real-world case studies throughout, this exploration of contemporary logistics describes the entire supply channel system – from inbound movement of freight through materials management to physical distribution to customers. State-of-the-art in perspective, it highlights topics that affect logistics channels management – including customer service, packaging, inventory management, traffic management and creating “value-added” linkages in the supply chain. The authors provide an overview of logistics, elements of logistics systems including order management and customer service, protective packaging and materials handling, domestic and industrial transportation management, inventory, warehousing and supply management, analyzing, designing, and implementing a logistics system. For individuals interested in contemporary logistics.

Value for Money 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have used this book as a reference whilst as a student and recommended it as a lecturer. The material it contains is explained in detail and most if not all major areas of Logistics and Supply Chain Management have been covered to some extent.

Topics like ECR that are today considered "new" or "cutting edge" were mentioned in this book.

It does not gloss over theories and calculations but actually walks you through these step-by-step.

I have read and used a number of Logistics or SCM books over the years. If you take all factors into account, including price, which is relevant to most students, you get absolute value for money.

This book has been dramatically improved in the 7th edition 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The book takes the reader progressively from the most simple concepts to the complexities of logistics. It is true that this is not a quantitive book, but it is a very conceptual and didactic logistics book with many cases and graphs. An internet site provided by the publisher with transparencies, internet site references, and other supports to this book makes it an excellent tool. There is a lot of value in the package offered.

Editorial Review:

The latest edition of this market leading text has adopted a supply chain approach, one of the latest developments in logistics management. Its managerial focus blends logistics theory with practical applications and includes updated material of latest transportation regulations and carrier pricing.

Editorial Review:

Most inventory professionals would gladly trade all the "latest thinking" books for a guide they could use to do their jobs better right now. Essentials of Inventory Management! presents ready-to-use information in key areas from physical control and layout to problem identification and resolution. Concentrating on daily-use inventory concepts, this practical workplace companion specifically addresses:

* Forecasting and replenishment strategies * Differences between finished-goods (retail) inventories and materials or work-in-process (manufacturing) inventories. * Materials requirements planning (MRP) and just-in-time (JIT) inventory systems * Managing inventory as both a physical object and a monetary value * Applying simple formulas to calculating quantities * Analyzing and remedying dysfunction

Plus, the book covers theft prevention, legal obligations, and the managment of natural, technological, and incited emergencies. In all, it's the most thorough introduction available to the inventory management profession.

Planning, from global to very detailed 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

In 7 large steps the writers show the reader the basics of production planning. Master planning, inventory management, MRP, capacity management, production activity control, JIT and the theory of constraints are explained, not only as basic statements, but also including some standard calculation approaches. 1991, the first production computer systems were introduced, but this book stays at the basic. What to do if the current ERP-systems fail and the millennium bug strikes again? Step-by-step, with a calculator in the hand.

Editorial Review:

This book provides an excellent source for professionals preparing for professional certification examinations. This new edition has been significantly reorganizsed to reflect more closely the organisation of professional certification exams. Discussion follows the step-by-step decision-making process, including topics such as: establishment of management objectives, long-, medium-, and short-range planning, execution, and control. It also features increased emphasis on tactical and technological considerations.

a must for those dealing with the channel 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent summary of all the major principles involved in either running or engaging with a distribution channel. It is remarkable in this age of cost awareness the lack of financial understanding of the channel and the massive impact it can have on the performance of an organisation. This book really helps to identify the main levers that channel managers can pull to improve the performanceIt is set out in an easy to understand format and makes it easy to implement some of the basic principles.
This should be compulsory reading for all those either working in the channel of engaged with it..

Editorial Review:

Distribution represents about 50% of the activities of almost every industry and is critical to a company’s success. Distribution is about more than logistics; it is about accessing and servicing markets and customers, controlling brands, creating differentiation, and improving the business model.

This book targets those who are involved in the marketing and distribution of products and services, whether they are working for a supplier, a customer, or another player. It provides a fast track to the issues, measures, relationships and success factors involved in bringing products and services to market, and is especially relevant for those who are looking for guidance in addressing the commercial and financial aspects of their role. It is also relevant to those who are financially literate but new to the concerns of distribution.
