Story versus Thesis 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The topic is interesting, but the minutiae of the story makes it difficult to stay engaged, and as such, reads more like a very dry thesis. So, the phrase: "Story of Risk" might sell books, but it does not accurately address this book. I did not feel engaged throughout the reading of this work, and this belies the problem with the asymmetry of title and book.

However, for academics and teachers, the book does give detail which may be used to "spice up" lectures. This may prove to be its number one utility.

My own barometer of whether a book is truly five stars is measured by its life on my bookshelf. I have a finite sized bookshelf, and yet the number of books being published is something for which an end of publication is difficult to see. As my attention was drawn to this book again, after seeking out other "Black Swan" books, I can tell you that my hardcover is looking for a different venue for its life time on my bookshelf is now in question.

Editorial Review:

With the stock market breaking records almost daily, leaving longtime market analysts shaking their heads and revising their forecasts, a study of the concept of risk seems quite timely. Peter Bernstein has written a comprehensive history of man's efforts to understand risk and probability, beginning with early gamblers in ancient Greece, continuing through the 17th-century French mathematicians Pascal and Fermat and up to modern chaos theory. Along the way he demonstrates that understanding risk underlies everything from game theory to bridge-building to winemaking.

It examines the gap between the expert view of risk and public perceptions of it. Presented in chronological order, it allows the reader to see the evolution of such perceptions of risk over the years, from highlighting public misconceptions of risk to recent work that recognizes the importance of equity, trust, power and other value-laden issues underlying public concern.

Editorial Review:

Never before have there been so many laws designed to keep corporations honest. New laws and regulations force companies to develop stronger ethics policies and the shareholders themselves are holding publicly traded companies accountable for their practices. Consumers are also concerned over the privacy of their personal information and current and emerging legislation is reflecting this trend. Under these conditions, it can be difficult to know where to turn for reliable, applicable advice.

The sixth edition of the Information Security Management Handbook addresses up-to-date issues in this increasingly important area. It balances contemporary articles with relevant articles from past editions to bring you a well grounded view of the subject. The contributions cover questions important to those tasked with securing information assets including the appropriate deployment of valuable resources as well as dealing with legal compliance, investigations, and ethics. Promoting the view that the management ethics and values of an organization leads directly to its information security program and the technical, physical, and administrative controls to be implemented, the book explores topics such as risk assessments; metrics; security governance, architecture, and design; emerging threats; standards; and business continuity and disaster recovery. The text also discusses physical security including access control and cryptography, and a plethora of technology issues such as application controls, network security, virus controls, and hacking.

US federal and state legislators continue to make certain that information security is a board-level conversation and the Information Security Management Handbook, Sixth Edition continues to ensure that there you have a clear understanding of the rules and regulations and an effective method for their implementation.

Risk as a Two-Sided Coin 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Too many of the books I have read on risk deal with the subject as something to be avoided.

Risk, properly assessed and entered into with open eyes, is essential to business and investing success. In Strategic Risk Taking: A Framework for Risk Management, Aswath Damodaran covers both sides. He offers a framework to limit some risks and exploit others.

The New York University finance professor draws a thorough portrait of risk measurement, hedging, and mitigation. He discusses the broad range of risk assessment tools, including risk adjusted value, scenario analysis, decision trees, VAR, and real options. Damodaran goes further. His discussion of when to increase risk exposure is insightful and rarely found in risk management texts.

Damodaran argues there are 10 principles that should govern all risk assessment and management. Risk:

1. Is everywhere.
2. Is threat and opportunity.
3. Evokes mixed feelings about its existence.
4. Is not created equal.
5. Is measurable.
6. Measurement and assessment leads to better decisions.
7. Should be apportioned. The key to risk management is deciding which risks to avoid, to pass through and to exploit.
8. Management results in value creation.
9. Management is everyone's job.
10. Taking organizations that are successful do not arrive there by accident.

Simply put, this is the most complete treatment of risk I have read. Proper implementation of its principles will help readers drive increased returns and value.

Editorial Review:

Although the pricing and hedging of derivatives contracts has been the subject of a large number of books, hardly any books exist on the actual design of derivatives contracts. Structured Equity Derivatives fills this gap in a remarkable way. The book introduces an approach to the structuring and practical application of derivatives that allows the reader to create his own derivatives solutions to an endless variety of problems. The approach is extremely natural - the only limit is the reader's own creativity.

Since it clearly explains the reasons why derivatives exist and why there is such a large variety, this is the book that should be read before picking up any other book on the pricing and hedging of derivatives. As the book concentrates on product design instead of pricing, there are no complex pricing formulas or numerical procedures. The emphasis is on intuition and common sense rather than complex formal results, which makes the book accessible to people from many different backgrounds.

Crisis In Organizations II: Home Run 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

When I saw the author on The Today Show a decade ago, I rushed to buy his book, and I've referred to it dozens of times each year at my job in Los Angeles, CA. To my delight, Dr. Barton has completely updated this book, and it's a joy to read. He examines why corporations in various industries face serious crises more than others, and then supports his arguments with credible, well written analysis. I learned much from the lessons of Coca-Cola's recall last year in Europe; even great brands can misjudge public opinion- and lose hundreds of millions of dollars as a result. I would say the best features of Barton's book are those that reflect on "best practices" in leading companies worldwide. And his new chapters on workplace violence, natural disasters and how to write a crisis management and communication plan all easy to apply, whether you work in public relations, security, human resources or in any position where you supervise people. Since Barton's first edition, he served as Vice President of Communication for Motorola, and I must say that his experience there boosts the practical value of this edition immensely. It's less theory this time, and more "here's the way it is" in writing: I valued his candor about managing downsizing, environmental spills and other serious incidents in the workplace. Barton's bibliography is thinner this time, as he has placed those resources on his web site. But that's a small point. Overall, this remains the single best book on crisis management I've read in a 30 year career spanning the industry. It's a must-read if you are interested in why companies get into serious trouble with the media, stockholders, employees and the public. His book is simply an outstanding read.

Editorial Review:

Crisis in Organizations is the most definitive and thorough work in the field of crisis management, providing detailed research and sound advice on preventing and managing crisis. Readers explore the array of incidents that face managers and organizations in crisis through a thoughtful blend of academic case studies and practitioner insights. An analysis of over 1400 disasters was completed in creating Crisis in Organizations to allow the reader to benefit from the learning curve of those confronted with real crisis.

Editorial Review:

Building upon the technical and organizational groundwork presented in the first edition, Risk Assessment and Decision Making in Business and Industry: A Practical Guide, Second Edition addresses the many aspects of risk/uncertainty (R/U) process implementation. This comprehensive volume covers four broad aspects of R/U: general concepts, implementation processes, technical aspects, and examples of application. Each section provides practical guidance, combining technical information with advice on how to implement R/U techniques and processes in real-world corporate environments. Following an examination of general principles involved in quantitatively assessing risks and their impact on value, the book describes the two main probabilistic measures of project value - Expected Value of Success (EVS) and the Expected Value for the Portfolio (EVP). The text clearly demonstrates how these metrics are used in individual-project and portfolio management. By presenting concepts in layman's terms and fully integrating advice related to technical and human characteristics of R/U-related corporate life, this book serves as a complete primer for professionals in any business environment. What's New in the Second Edition: · Provides guidance for implementation of R/U processes in modern corporations · Offers a crucial breakthrough by defining the terms "risk" and "uncertainty" in ways that can be applied in all aspects of science and business · Explores real-world impediments to process change and implementation · Addresses R/U from a corporate decision-maker's perspective, detailing how to employ R/U to set budgets, manage portfolios, value investments, and execute other critical tasks
