El libro que usamos en «AP» 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm using "Abriendo paso: gramática" in my AP Spanish class and I really like it. It doesn't use a lot of color or pictures, but that's OK with me. It lays out the grammar rules (in English with sample sentences and translations) and gives exercises to aid in understanding. We're using this book in conjunction with "Una vez más" and I must say they compliment eachother nicely. Abriendo paso describes rules in English and gives translations of example sentences, so it clears up confusion easily. However, there are usually only two or three "ejercisios" per rule. This is where "Una vez más" comes in. It also has a few exercises for each rule, so it's nice to combine the two. However "Una vez más" has no English so it can add to confusion (on the other hand it's good practice!)

Editorial Review:

The best-selling Abriendo paso is a two-volume program that addresses the needs of high school students in upper-level and advanced placement courses. The reading volume, Lectura, uses authentic readings from around the Spanish-speaking world, including the US, as springboards for developing proficiency in all four skills. The companion grammar, Gramtica, provides a complete review of Spanish grammar with an emphasis on communication. Flexible and attuned to students' varied backgrounds and ability levels, each volume of Abriendo paso may be used independently or in conjunction with other upper-level materials.

good 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Good text book. It will prepare you for what you need to know. I bought this book and skipped Spanish 1 in 9th grade. All As in Spanish 2. I can't complain.

Frankly, I'm not really interested in Spanish. The book isn't interesting, but it is helpful if you want to get a start in the language.

Pretty good, more vocab oriented 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I like the Paso a Paso series. I skipped from Spanish I to Spanish IV with the help of these books. You do indeed develope pretty good, and useful, vocabulary in the texts. You are also ready for the next book if all you get to is chapter 8. Only 8 chapters are necessary. Though, you will have a more solid foundation with all chapters of each book.

This book takes it slow. But in a good way. It does not throw 8 tenses at you right away. If you go the normal route, going only to chapter 8, you will only be equipped with the present tense. You will also have the yo imperative.

Book 2, you get the preterit, imperfect, and present progressive.

Book 3, you get the perfect tenses (I have done, I had done), the imperatives, and the future. If you do get through all of this book, you will have the subjunctive and conditional with you. Basically, everything you really need.

Usually the subjunctive is held off until Spanish IV. And a different text book is used.

If you get this series, you will not be disappointed. Just get the workbooks, and do them. I have two copies of each workbook, and a copy of each book. You also might want to have someone to help you, and maybe some audio if you want to become really proficient.

In all, get ALL three and the three workbooks if you want to get a good grasp of the language.

Oh, and as the title says, this is more vocabulary oriented. So you are not hit around with too much grammar. But, by the end, you WILL have most of the grammar you need! (by end, I mean end of the three books)

LASTLY, you might want to pair up with someone with this book. A lot of partner activities are in here.

Love This Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I thought my AP Spanish Language teacher just used this book for reference, but it turns out that this was my placement exam, and the book she loves for the entire course

Great for practicing for the exam, great for fuentes como lo que podra encontrar, just great!

covers all sorts of topics, different themes, and the audio is good, too!

A+, 5 stars, I would definitely get it over any other book I've ever had for the AP exam!

Editorial Review:

This nationally recognized text has been revised to meet the requirements of the new integrated-skills format for the AP Spanish Language Exam. The student text continues to emphasize vocabulary acquisition. As before, each of the ten chapters will treat a different theme and recycle vocabulary throughout. A major revision, 85% of the text has been rewritten in order to prepare students for success with the nine different evaluation types required for the exam. The audio portion of the program has been completely revised and expanded. It now includes 90 audio activities plus 100 articles of interest to high school students on a wide variety of authentic topics. Vocabulary building and testing activities for each chapter have been added as well as a Spanish-to-English glossary.

A lesson for our times 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Mark Danner's short book, The Massacre at El Mozote, is an extremely powerful depiction of not only what can go wrong with US foreign policy, but of the lengths politicians will go through to convince us that what they are doing is, in fact, right. The thoroughness and integrity of Danner's investigation cannot be disputed; on top of that, he is very adept at leaving readers to draw their own conclusions. The book may be the Hiroshima of our times.

While I agree with earlier reviewers, especially the point that what appears to be propaganda should not be immediately dismissed as such, I think the real lesson of the book is that the US, as a leader in world affairs, needs to choose its "friends" very carefully. Danner's book made me realize that while the US likes to shape Latin American policy, in point of fact the powerful "Good Neighbor" to the north is often manipulated by the very regimes it seeks to control. And as citizens of this great country, we have a hard time imagining such a thing.

The butchers of the El Salvador government, trained and financed by the US, knew that they could commit whatever atrocities they wished so long as they opposed the socialist rebels. Consequently, in December 1981, they murdered 767 people at El Mozote and in surrounding villages with impunity because they understood that the political stakes were much higher in Washington once the Reagan administration had committed itself to supporting the status quo. In its frantic attempts to dispute or to ignore the details of the massacre, the Reagan administration-which liked to portray itself as hard-line-really appears as the spineless weakling in this whole affair. Truly, the "tail wagged the dog."

This is an important lesson to bear in mind as the US conducts a new war on terrorism (the Communists having been vanquished years ago). Is our country going to find itself supporting human rights abusers once again because our leaders are afraid of political fallout, by appearing to be weak on combating terrorism or inept at finding WMDs? Human rights--and especially the right to life itself--should be the criteria our government considers when it decides to throw its support behind a foreign government.

Editorial Review:

In December 1981 soldiers of the Salvadoran Army's select, American-trained Atlacatl Battalion entered the village of El Mozote, where they murdered hundreds of men, women, and children, often by decapitation. Although reports of the massacre -- and photographs of its victims -- appeared in the United States, the Reagan administration quickly dismissed them as propaganda. In the end, El Mozote was forgotten. The war in El Salvador continued, with American funding.

When Mark Danner's reconstruction of these events first appeared in The New Yorker, it sent shock waves through the news media and the American foreign-policy establishment. Now Danner has expanded his report into a brilliant book, adding new material as well as the actual sources. He has produced a masterpiece of scrupulous investigative journalism that is also a testament to the forgotten victims of a neglected theater of the cold war.

Great Eyewitness account 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Diaz was one of the soldiers who accompanied Cortez to invade the Aztec Empire. His account is one of the best we have of the whole affair. It is not written with much bias and was written to discount historical myths after the invasion had taken place. It is very analytical at times and his analysis of what happened is given added authority since he was present at the events. If you want to understand what happened this is a great book to read.

Amazing first person historical account 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

First person historical accounts are generally the best way to read history and have it come alive in the mind of the reader. This book by Bernal Diaz is certainly no exception to that rule. Although Diaz wrote this much later in life, and doubtless his memory was not perfect, it is obvious that the experience of marching with Cortez in the conquest of the Aztec empire left innumerable vivid memories in his mind.

I am very sensitive to the fact that the conquest of the Aztec empire and other native empires in the Americas left a horrific legacy which is still felt dramatically throughout the hemisphere. Despite the fact that in many ways, the conquistadors should not be considered "heroes," I think we still can admire and be awed by their courage and fortitude in the face of unbelievable odds in facing the Aztecs and not only escaping with their lives, but eventually conquering the entire civilization. Diaz brings these events to life better than any history book I ever read, and I highly commend this book to anyone interested in the history of this period, of Mexico, or Latin America in general.

Editorial Review:

The second edition of Cinema for Spanish Conversation includes the same stimulating exercises and conversation materials that have made the first edition a success among students and instructors alike. The text is designed to be used in courses in which outstanding films from the Spanish-speaking world are used as springboards for classroom Spanish-language discussion. Using high-interest feature films, students hear Spanish as it is spoken in different countries and in a wide variety of situations and are encouraged to listen to and converse about the social and cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries around the world. The second edition includes a high-interest reading for each chapter; reading selections include interviews, magazine or newspaper articles, and selections from film scripts or literary pieces. Each reading is followed by an activity. These readings are optional; they can be covered in-depth if reading is one of the goals of the course. Each chapter is devoted to one movie, and contains appropriate vocabulary, cultural notes, special terms for conversation and |composition, a focus on a specific scene for structured discussion or writing, questions for review and understanding, and quotations from directors or critics. Difficult-to-find or older films have been replaced by films of more immediate interest to students. New to this edition are: María llena eres de gracia [Maria Full of Grace], Diarios de motocicleta [The Motorcycle Diaries], and Mar adentro [The Sea Inside].
