Star Trek notwithstanding, when you get taken to another planet and they all write and speak English without the benefit of any translation device or other plot device, I don't think much of the writer or their opinion of their readers.

I saw the movie "Fight Club" a couple years before I heard who Chuck Palahniuk was, and the film was a fantastic guy movie, and a pretty phenomenal flick all around. After I learned who Palahniuk was and read several of his other stories, I figured it was time to get to his first and probably most popular novel, "Fight Club." I was not disappointed.

From the introduction, Palahniuk sums up his goal with "Fight Club": to write a story where you get just the kernel of the story, the core bit, and to stack those one after another without any fluff, and he does this remarkably well. Each chapter starts with a premise bordering on ridiculous, then morphs into something grotesque or absurd yet believable, and ends before you have a chance to think about putting the book down, only to begin another chapter with the same structure but different ideas and actions. The things that flash through your mind in an instant, the things you have probably thought about but would never in a million years actually take seriously or attempt, this book is filled with those things, and suprisingly it draws you in even more than it grosses you out.

My one complaint, which isn't even really a complaint, is that if you've seen the movie you know exactly what's going to happen in the book. The sequence of events, the characters, the quotes, everything; the film mirrored them in stunning detail and made them all work together to produce an incredible movie. But the book came first, and it was so completely Palahniuk's story on screen more than most other novel adapations that he deserves the credit for the phenomenon it has become. And yet, even knowing exactly what would happen at every turn, the raw language and action of the book makes it an incredible enjoyable read that's easily worth the couple of hours it takes to breeze through the story. It's still a beautiful and unique snowflake, no matter what Tyler Durden says.

This silly story centers around self-responsibility. The children panic because they know their mother won't be happy if she comes home and find the house a mess. The fish fluctuates between being an annoyance and a voice of reason.

The story stars a well-meaning cat who tries to release the children from an afternoon of boredom. He brings excitement, which quickly devolves into chaos...or so it seems.

This is a fun bedtime story, nothing more, nothing less. My sons weren't looking for a debate about latch-key children and abandonment. We'll leave those reviews to the sociology graduates.

If your children enjoy this book, I also recommend, "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back."

Brave New World takes place in a utopian London around the year 2540, which started with a good idea, but went way wrong. Humans are produced in large numbers in a high-tech factory without the filth of viviparous reproduction. The babies produced are organized into five castes and are conditioned specifically to do their part in maintaining their society. As the reader progresses farther into the story, they find out what is sacrificed for the stability of the utopian world they occupy, when the reader explores this world through the mind of a man named John, who has not been conditioned to accept this world that suppresses the emotions we value so much today. John comes from a "savage" reservation in New Mexico; where the humans remain that practice our modern day culture. With advances in science allover the world making our lifestyle obsolete, the "savage" lifestyle is repulsive in the eyes of the rest of the brave new world. See how our blind ignorance can lead to catastrophe.

Although an attempt to sum up the novel in only a small amount of words would be in vain, I can offer that this book is a must read for anyone who is capable of thinking beyond ideas provided by way of the text.

This was SUCH a great book. The story Brave New World entertained me more than any other book I have ever read before. It not only was an incredible plot, with amazing creativity, and imagination, but also has shocking conversation that challenge values accepted in our society today, and challenges the minds of all intellectuals willing to relate to the characters, and attempt to draw parallels between Huxley's story, and the story our culture continues to write, as we advance to where Huxley's world began.

To me, a book is worth no more than the thoughts it provokes once I have set it down. By this standard, I am still not done calculating its genius, because I have not yet finished thinking, or talking about themes from the book.

Rob Inglis is, in my opinion, one of the best readers out there, and I think he's perfect for "The Hobbit" and the complete "Lord of the Rings." He sings what needs singing, very well, which is relatively unusual. I have thoroughly enjoyed the creation he has wrought!!

We owe a debt of incalculable value to J.R.R. Tolkien. He is the father of an entire genre, a genre that has been able to carry many of us through our darkest hours. Although The Hobbit came out over 70 years ago, it is yet fresh and vibrant. Dear Bilbo is still an enchanting hero and still unique--so many main characters are thinly veiled reflections of ideal selves, whereas Bilbo makes us instead rather want to become Hobbits.

The Hobbit is less world-weary than the Lord of the Rings. It is also a more tightly knit story. For these two reasons, I prefer The Hobbit to the later saga, but I am still grateful that I am a better person for having experienced both The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.

In The Hobbit, we experience a series of adventures that are precipitated by an odd invitation from Gandalf, and through these adventures we see Bilbo pass from mere observer to central character. Tolkien was a master at many things: character, mythology, story; however, his observations of the essential qualities of human nature make his writings timeless and transcendent of societal changes.

It was a joy to experience The Hobbit. I look forward to reading it to my girls. I don't consider it merely recommended reading; I classify it as canon.
