A very good read, worth picking up but a little "too perfect" for my tastes= 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Let me be clear from the start - I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Fans of zombie apocalypse speculative fiction would be well served picking up this book if they have not already done so. The author is clearly intelligent and has done his research and his attention to detail is fantastic.

My problem is that the story is a little bit too perfect - the protagonist is just too good at what he does and his luck appears to be just too good. There doesn't appear to be a single skill or ability that he or his crew doesn't have to tackle the myriad of situations they're faced with. This is not a story about your `average joe' who rises to the nigh impossible challenge of surviving in a world filled with the undead. It's more like MacGyver vs. the Undead.

Editorial Review:

START INTERCEPT_ Sporadic news reports indicate chaos and violence spreading through U.S. cities. An unknown evil is sweeping the planet. The dead are rising to claim the Earth as the new dominant species in the food chain. INTERCEPT COMPLETE_ Survivor, In your hands is the handwritten journal depicting one man's struggle for survival. Trapped in the midst of global disaster, he must make decisions; choices that ultimately mean life, or the eternal curse to walk as one of them. Enter if you will into his world. -The world of the undead.

Editorial Review:

Roland Deschain and his "ka-tet" are bearing southeast through the forests of Mid-World, the almost timeless landscape that seems to stretch from the wreckage of civility that defined Roland's youth to the crimson chaos that seems the future's only promise. Readers of Stephen King's epic series know Roland well, or as well as this enigmatic hero can be known. They also know the companions who have been drawn to his quest for the Dark Tower: Eddie Dean and his wife, Susannah; Jake Chambers, the boy who has come twice through the doorway of death into Roland's world; and Oy, the Billy-Bumbler. In this long-awaited fifth novel in the saga, their path takes them to the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis, a tranquil valley community of farmers and ranchers on Mid-World's borderlands. Beyond the town, the rocky ground rises toward the hulking darkness of Thunderclap, the source of a terrible affliction that is slowly stealing the community's soul. One of the town's residents is Pere Callahan, a ruined priest who, like Susannah, Eddie, and Jake, passed through one of the portals that lead both into and out of Roland's world. As Father Callahan tells the "ka-tet" the astonishing story of what happened following his shamed departure from Maine in 1977, his connection to the Dark Tower becomes clear, as does the danger facing a single red rose in a vacant lot off Second Avenue in midtown Manhattan. For Calla Bryn Sturgis, danger gathers in the east like a storm cloud. The Wolves of Thunderclap and their unspeakable depredation are coming. To resist them is to risk all, but these are odds the gunslingers are used to, and they can give the "Calla-folken" both courage and cunning. Their guns, however, will not be enough.

Disappointed in main character 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this book because of it's high reviews. I read the first few chapters.. and then started skimming, hoping Kate would be less irritating. Strong, confident heroines are my favorite sort of protagonist but Kate was.. too bitchy, too kickass, too independent, too awesome at wielding her named phallic symbol. Too much of a stereotype. It feels like she's trying too hard to be an anti-hero and ultimately, just coming across as false and smug.

The alcohol, sex, and gore all seemed rather forced in an attempt to be edgy and raw.

I love fantasy/paranormal/scifi literature and I'm glad that so many people enjoyed this book -- I really wanted to find a new author and series to follow but it just didn't work out for my personal taste. Perhaps the high reviews skewed my expectations -- I thought it would be old school Blake, Harrison, Briggs, maybe even a female Butcher's Harry Dresden.

Mercenary Kate Daniels cleans up urban problems of a paranormal kind. But her latest prey, a pack of undead warriors, presents her greatest challenge.

3rd in the Destiny Trilogy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

An unstoppable fleet of Borg have begun their invasion. Entire worlds will perish. The entire Federation may be wiped out. Captain Hernadez has a risky plan. With their options limited, their only hope may hinge upon a race who has sworn to never interfere.

With events from the two previous books culminating to disastrous outcomes, Lost Souls wraps up open ended questions with an incredible revelation. With the situation as bad as it could possibly get, the four captains (Picard, Riker, Dax, and Hernadez) must team up together to discover a way to stop the Borg once and for all. With time running out for Earth and all of the worlds of the Federation, the suspense and intensity spikes.

This is by far the best book in the trilogy. Taking the reader through a wide range of emotions, Mack has wrapped up the Destiny trilogy in an amazing web of storylines that connect in an unpredictable way. Lost Souls has become one of my favorite Star Trek novels, with a shocking ending that will affect the entire Trek universe. Trek fans must read this fantastic trilogy.

Editorial Review:

The soldiers of Armageddon are on the march, laying waste to worlds in their passage. An audacious plan could stop them forever, but it carries risks that one starship captain is unwilling to take. For Captain Jean-Luc Picard, defending the future has never been so important, or so personal -- and the wrong choice will cost him everything for which he has struggled and suffered.

For Captain William Riker, that choice has already been made. Haunted by the memories of those he was forced to leave behind, he must jeopardize all that he has left in a desperate bid to save the Federation.

For Captain Ezri Dax, whose impetuous youth is balanced by the wisdom of many lifetimes, the choice is a simple one: there is no going back -- only forward to whatever future awaits them.

But for those who, millennia ago, had no choice...this is the hour of their final, inescapable destiny.

Editorial Review:

Ex-cop Luther Malone, lifelong member of the secretive paranormal organization known as the Arcane Society, is waiting to meet Grace Renquist. Hired as an aura-reading consultant in the quest for a murder suspect, she’s got zero field experience. She’s from tiny Eclipse Bay, Oregon. She’s a librarian, for heaven’s sake.

As for Grace, she’s not expecting much either from Malone, who walks with a cane and isn’t so good with a gun. Nice resumé for a bodyguard…

But even before they reach their hotel in Maui - where they’ll be posing as honeymooners - Grace and Luther feel the electric charge between them. Problem is, they need to remain vigilant day and night; because it soon becomes clear there’s more going on here. Rogue sensitives - operatives for the underground group Nightshade - are pouring into the luxury resort like there’s a convention. Grace recognizes those dark spikes in their auras. She saw the same pattern in someone else in another life - a life she hasn’t revealed to Luther or anyone else. And she understands how dangerous these people can be…especially with those para-hunters at their sides.

While the pair’s employers at Jones & Jones scramble to get them backup, Luther and Grace have to think on their feet. The criminals in their midst aren’t just high-level sensitives: They’ve enhanced their talents with a potent - and unpredictable - drug. And as Grace knows all too well, if you don’t control your powers, your powers will control you…

WOW! ABSOLUTLEY wonderful read! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is not meant for readers under 25 in my opinion. Other than that I don't know what's up with all the bad reviews! I thought it was fantastic! I know it had some uncomfortable scenes and may be out on the edge for some mainstream readers, but life is not always comfortable. It doesn't hurt to be taken out of ones comfort zone. It's better in fantacy than in real life. The book also had love, faith, and truth. I will hold alot of things to my heart that this book teaches. Such as, Don't take people at face value, and No matter how bad the situation, there is always a lesson to be learned. Although, I don't think Goodkind means for this to be a book of lessons, some of the lines in the book are worth remembering. I am sooo looking forward to the next adventure and hope Goodwin doesn't let me down. Life is not always easy, even in a fantacy world of wizzards and confessors.

Editorial Review:

Millions of readers the world over have been held spellbound by this valiant tale vividly told.

Now, enter Terry Goodkind's world, the world of The Sword of Truth.

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help...and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.

In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword-to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed...or that their time has run out.

This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

"Wonderfully creative, seamless, and stirring."

the middle of a series 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

First this is a fine example of military science fiction; like this genre and you will like the book. This particular work is the 6th in this series about a young woman lt. in the Wardhavan space navy. She is also the daughter of the prime minister and grand daughter of the planetary king. It is very much the middle of a series of unknown length.
The background is complicated. The commonwealth of Earth has just amicably broken up after a civil war. There has also been a war to the hilt with the only alien race so far found. Wardhavan is the center planet in a democratic commonwealth of circa 125 planets founded out of the ruins but has enemies including a forming extreme dictatorship.
The characters are well written and deep. but I would not advise just jumping in at this book becasue you will miss so much needed background. Take my advice, read the first book, then the second, etc.

Editorial Review:

Across the ruined landscape that is America - hopelessly poisoned, plague-ridden, burned, and besieged by demon armies bent on exterminating all mortal life - two pilgrims have been summoned to serve the embattled cause of good. Logan Tom has journeyed to desolate Seattle to protect a ragged band of street urchins and the being known as the gypsy morph, who is both mortal and magical, and destined to save mankind unless he is destroyed. Likewise, Angel Perez has her own quest, one that will take her from the wreckage of Los Angeles to a distant, secret place untouched by the horrors of the nationwide blight - a place where the race of Elves has dwelled since before man existed. But close behind these lone Knights of the Word swarm the ravening forces of the Void.

As the menacing thunder of war drums heralds the arrival of the demons and their brutal minions in Seattle, the young survivors who call themselves the Ghosts are forced to brave the dangerous world of gangs, mutants, and worse to escape the invasion. And Logan Tom must infiltrate a refugee compound to rescue Hawk, the leader of the street urchins, who has yet to learn the truth about who and what he is. Meanwhile, Angel Perez has joined an equally urgent mission: to find the Ellcrys, a fabled talisman crucial to protecting the Elven realm against an influx of unspeakable evil from the dread dimension known as the Forbidding. But Angel and her Elven allies must beware - for a demon spy, with a monstrous creature at its command, walks among them.

As the legions of darkness draw the noose tighter, and the time of confrontation draws near, those chosen to defend the soul of the world must draw their battle lines and prepare to fight with, and for, their lives. If they fail, humanity falls.
