From "Rocket Summer" to "The Million-Year Picnic," Ray Bradbury's stories of the colonization of Mars form an eerie mesh of past and future. Written in the 1940s, the chronicles drip with nostalgic atmosphere--shady porches with tinkling pitchers of lemonade, grandfather clocks, chintz-covered sofas. But longing for this comfortable past proves dangerous in every way to Bradbury's characters--the golden-eyed Martians as well as the humans. Starting in the far-flung future of 1999, expedition after expedition leaves Earth to investigate Mars. The Martians guard their mysteries well, but they are decimated by the diseases that arrive with the rockets. Colonists appear, most with ideas no more lofty than starting a hot-dog stand, and with no respect for the culture they've displaced.

Bradbury's quiet exploration of a future that looks so much like the past is sprinkled with lighter material. In "The Silent Towns," the last man on Mars hears the phone ring and ends up on a comical blind date. But in most of these stories, Bradbury holds up a mirror to humanity that reflects a shameful treatment of "the other," yielding, time after time, a harvest of loneliness and isolation. Yet the collection ends with hope for renewal, as a colonist family turns away from the demise of the Earth towards a new future on Mars. I've read the 5 previous books and the 6th (Metal Swarm ) doesn't disappoint. You either love this series or you hate it. No in between.

I like it because it's like reading 4 or 5 books all in one. A long book that is made up of intertwining short stories.

It takes a long time for the plot to develop and that is why some people do hate this series. After all we live in a society of instant gratification.

My suggestion, pick up the first in the series and read 20 pages in the bookstore. Either it'll grab you and I'll see you on book 6 in no time or it won't and no worries.

Great Book for any Sci-Fi Fan! 5 out of 5 stars.

I started this book before being a fan of Warhammer 40K or the Black Library and it was still interesting and fun to read. You don't have to be a 40K expert to enjoy the story and the interesting characters. Dan Abnett is also great at keeping a series interesting and different by keeping the same characters and ideas, but writing with very different plots and styles. One thing I hate in a series is when it seems like the author follows a specific plot outline with every book and just adds new places and storys. The Dan Abnett books do not do this, and this keeps the books very interesting.
The characters are the best part of the books, they are not archetype characters that are either purely good or completely evil. The characters have depths and shades of gray.
Overall I would say this book is a great read, and I highly reccomend the other works by Dan Abnett.

CD Mix Up 3 out of 5 stars.

Was really looking forward to this box set. There are supposed to be five 3-CD sleeves, labeled Part One through Part Five. My box set arrived with two Part Three sleeves and no Part Two sleeve.

First time I've ever used Amazon's RMA system. I am impressed. I hope my box set was a one-of-a-kind error and not a systematic problem with BBC Radio's product. In any case, no fault of Amazon. My replacement is all ready on the way!
