Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

In this marvelous book Smuts draws from years of painstaking field research in which she followed around a flange of chacma baboons in the Mateti Game Park in Zimbabwe. Her findings inspired the plot of When Harry Met Sally.

Editorial Review:

This work analyzes male-female relationships outside the context of mating in a troop of wild baboons. Barbara Smuts used long-term friendships between males and females, documented over a two-year period, to show how social interactions between members of friendly pairs differed from those of other troop mates, Her findings, now enhanced by 15 years of field studies, suggest that the evolution of male reproductive strategies in baboons can only be understood by considering the relationship between sex and friendship: female baboons prefer to mate with males who have previously engaged in friendly interaction with them and their offspring. Smuts suggests that female choice may promote male investment in other species, and she explores the relevance of her findings for the evolution of male-female relationships in humans.

Editorial Review:

Motivation: A Biobehavioural Approach provides the reader with an understanding of why individuals exhibit certain behaviors, and what causes these actions. Roderick Wong presents an analysis of motivated behavior such as sexual activity, parental behavior, food selection, and fear or aggression, from a biological perspective. Each chapter focuses on the individual systems underlying specific motivational states that result in motivated acts. The author discusses similarities, differences, and integration between these motivational systems throughout the volume. Using a framework derived from research and theory from animal behavior and comparative psychology, he analyzes relevant issues in human motivation such as mate choice, nepotism, attachment and independence, sensation-seeking, obesity, and parent-offspring conflict. This book will be particularly useful for undergraduate students in psychology or behavioral science taking courses in motivation and emotion, comparative psychology, animal behavior, or biological psychology.

Editorial Review:

With insight and wit, Robert J. Richards focuses on the development of evolutionary theories of mind and behavior from their first distinct appearance in the eighteenth century to their controversial state today. Particularly important in the nineteenth century were Charles Darwin's ideas about instinct, reason, and morality, which Richards considers against the background of Darwin's personality, training, scientific and cultural concerns, and intellectual community. Many critics have argued that the Darwinian revolution stripped nature of moral purpose and ethically neutered the human animal. Richards contends, however, that Darwin, Herbert Spencer, and their disciples attempted to reanimate moral life, believing that the evolutionary process gave heart to unselfish, altruistic behavior.

"Richards's book is now the obvious introduction to the history of ideas about mind and behavior in the nineteenth century."—Mark Ridley, Times Literary Supplement

"Not since the publication of Michael Ghiselin's The Triumph of the Darwinian Method has there been such an ambitious, challenging, and methodologically self-conscious interpretation of the rise and development and evolutionary theories and Darwin's role therein."—John C. Greene, Science

"His book . . . triumphantly achieves the goal of all great scholarship: it not only informs us, but shows us why becoming thus informed is essential to understanding our own issues and projects."—Daniel C. Dennett, Philosophy of Science

Editorial Review:

What is the biological function of daily mood variations? What is the relationship between mood and such factors as exercise, time of day, nutrition, stress, and illness? Why do long-term personal problems sometimes appear overwhelming late at night, but of lesser significance when energy is high? How can subtle physiological and psychological influences exert control not only on mood, but also on perception, judgment, and cognitive processes, and ultimately on behavior? How does snacking, coffee drinking, and smoking affect one's mental disposition, and how can urges to use these substances be understood as attempts to regulate mood? Drawing on his own wide-ranging research concerning subjective assessments of mood and on extensive research by others, Dr. Thayer presents a comprehensive theory of normal mood states, viewing them as subjective components of two biological arousal systems, one which people find energizing, and the other which people describe as producing tension. The author explains these two mood effects in relation to a complex relationship between energy and tension. Relevant research is systematically reviewed, and moods are analyzed in relation to circadian rhythms, exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress, and cognition. Perceptual and motivational effects of mood are also discussed, as are measurement and research design issues. Unique in its depth and comprehensiveness, this book will be of interest not only to researchers in psychology, biology, and medicine, but its clear style of presentation and the practical activities suggested for mood regulation will make it interesting to general readers as well.

Editorial Review:

This up-to-date and important new work describes the relationship between psychological and hormonal factors found in human sexual behavior across the lifespan. The author's discussion of human sexual behavior is organized according to developmental stage, starting with the fetus and concluding with senescence. Persky proposes that human sexual behavior is determined by a variety of factors, e.g. social, psychological, and endocrine, and ascertains the relative contribution of each of these factors to a range of sexual behaviors, attitudes, and feelings. Furthermore, he provides documentation that these determinants are interrelated in reciprocal fashion. In addition, by organizing his material within the Life Development model, Persky is able to present normal and abnormal psychoendocrine relationships which lead to sexual disorders.

Editorial Review:

This volume of essays in honour of Daniel G. Freedman provides an overview of "holistic" studies of human behaviour. Freedman's pioneering ethological analyses encouraged naturalistic studies of evolved bases of behaviour. His comparative view of behaviour helped prepare the way for much of the current cross-cultural research. The scholars in the volume acknowledge Freedman's influence on work in areas such as human behavioural genetics, developmental psycho-biology, cross-cultural observational research, and evolutionary psychology. Uniting the chapters is the conviction that psychology benefits from the infusion of biological concepts and methods.
