A standard work in vegetation ecology 4 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This is a standard in the discipline of vegetation ecology and probably the best introductiion to the field. This is a thoroughly revised new edition of the original book from 1986. It is a good introduction to the various methods available for analysis of vegetation data, like correspondence analysis, principle components analysis and regression analysis. A good point about this book is that consistently works with the same example dataset for explaining all different analysis methods. This clearly shows the differences in outcome of the different methods. A bad point is that its not always written very clearly and includes some very theoretical parts.

Editorial Review:

Ecologists need to analyze their field data to interpret relationships within plant and animal communities and with their environments. The purpose of this book is to show ecologists and environmental scientists what numerical and statistical methods are most useful, how to use them and interpret the results from them, and what pitfalls to avoid. Subjects treated include data requirements, regression analysis, calibration (or inverse regression), ordination techniques, cluster analysis, and spatial analysis of ecological data. The authors take pains to use only elementary mathematics and explain the ecological models behind the techniques. Exercises and solution are provided for practice. This is the only book written specifically for ecologists that explains such techniques as logistic regression, canonical correspondence analysis, and kriging (statistical manipulation of data). This is a reissue of a book first published in 1987 by Pudoc (The Netherlands).

Not nearly as good as Learning/Intermediate Perl or Tisdall's books 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Although James Tisdall's Perl books (Beginning/Mastering Perl for Bioinformatics) could be a little scattered, I found that they offered more for the biologist learning Perl than this one; you could almost buy both those books for the price of this one! This book seems structured more along the lines of the (superior) Learning Perl and Intermediate Perl by Schwartz et al, with a few biological references thrown in as examples. Some of the most important aspects of biological sequence analysis were glossed over fairly quickly if at all. I found it somewhat amazing that file format parsing, restriction enzyme analysis, sequence conversion, transcription-translation, program output parsing, and other fundamental topics were either covered very briefly in passing or not covered at all. Disappointing!

I believe one might find this book was a great read first time out (it is well written), but that once they progressed to other texts (Learning Perl, Intermediate Perl, Programming Perl), they would rarely, if ever, refer back to this one. That's not good for a $50 book. I can't see myself using it in the future when I have the Camel and Llama covering my back, along with Tisdall's texts. Basically a lot of sugar coating without much substance.

Oh, and there's a major mistake in the Object-Oriented Programming section, one which really breaks your programs. In short : -> != =>

My advice: spend your money on those texts and use your imagination on what Perl can accomplish for you as a biologist. If you are an advanced Perl programmer and biologist, at least check out Tisdall's books and wait for the long-rumored BioPerl book. I would give it 3 stars for the writing but the price doesn't justify it, sorry. The Amazon review system won't let me change the rating though, so you lucked out this time!

Editorial Review:

Working on the assumption that the reader has no formal training in programming, Perl Programming for Biologists demonstrates how Perl is used to solve biological problems. Each chapter opens with a set of learning objectives, provides numerous review questions and self-study exercises, and concludes with a bulleted summary of key points. The author incorporates numerous real-life examples throughout the text. Upon completing the book, readers are able to quickly perform such tasks as correcting recurring errors in spreadsheets, scanning a Fasta sequence for every occurrence of an EcoRI site, adapting other writers' scripts to one's own purposes, and most important, writing reusable and maintainable scripts that spare the rote repetition of code.

Editorial Review:

Why would a grown man chase hornets with a thermometer, paint whirligig beetles bright red, or track elephants through the night to fill trash bags with their prodigious droppings? Some might say--to advance science. Heinrich says--because it's fun.

Bernd Heinrich, author of the much acclaimed Bumblebee Economics, has been playing in the wilds of one continent or another all his life. In the process, he has become one of the world's foremost physiological ecologists. With In a Patch of Fireweed, he will undoubtedly become one of our foremost writers of popular science.

Part autobiography, part case study in the ways of field biology, In a Patch of Fireweed is an endlessly fascinating account of a scientist's life and work. For the author, it is an opportunity to report not just his results but the curiosity, humor, error, passion, and competitiveness that feed into the process of discovery. For the reader, it is simply a delight, a rare chance to share the perceptions of an unusual mind fully in tune with the inner workings of nature. Before his years of research in the woodlands and deserts of North America, the New Guinea highlands, and the plains of East Africa, Heinrich had a sense of the wild that few people in this century can know. He tells the whole story, from his refugee childhood hidden in a German forest, eating mice fried in boar fat, to his ongoing research in the woods surrounding his cabin in Maine.

A Keystone For The Laboratory 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

When I first started work in a lab as an undergrad, I would often learn of crucial tricks after I had already messed up a procedure and lost an hour or more of work. It's ironic how dependent molecular biologists are on that most ancient means of communication: oral tradition.

When I took a biochem lab, I was introduced to the Seidman and Moore text, which is a fantastic teaching source. For the beginner, this book has chapters on basic units of measurement and mathematics, laboratory organization and regulation (including the government bodies which oversee lab safety), writing standards, and web etiquette. No stone is unturned! Even after one gets the basics mastered, this book has tables on plastics and buffers, showing how they react to heat, light, and other critical data--my biochemistry instructor was even suprised by some of the information on plasticware! This is a companion for one's career in the lab.

Editorial Review:

A primary text for courses that focus on basic laboratory methods in biotechnology, and an ancillary text for any biology course that includes a laboratory component that want to focus on biotechnology. Unique in both content and approach, this text/reference provides a systematic introduction to basic laboratory methods from the perspective of the everyday work in the labs of the biotechnology/bioscience industry. Written at a level that is accessible to beginning college students with average math and science backgrounds. Provides the depth and detail useful to professional laboratory workers. It blends the background and theory provided by introductory chemistry texts with the practical concerns discussed in advanced lab manuals. It focuses on basic laboratory methods, the principles that underlie those methods, and the equipment that makes laboratory work possible.

Radio Tracking and Animal Populations 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Radio tracking and animal populations covers all aspects of radio tracking wild animals, from designing the study right through to analyzing results and drawing conclusion from the findings. I have found this book to be the most comprehensively referenced, and in depth piece of literature on radio tracking that I have managed to locate so far.
I have constantly used this book while carrying out a telemetry study as the research for my masters degree, and recommend this book as the ideal starting point for anyone considering carying out a radio tracking study of wild animals.
My only regret concerning this book is that I didn't come across it earlier in my studies.

Editorial Review:

Radio Tracking and Animal Populations is a succinct synthesis of emerging technologies and their applications to the empirical and theoretical problems of population assessment. The book is divided into sections designed to encompass the various aspects of animal ecology that may be evaluated using radiotelemetry technology - experimental design, equipment and technology, animal movement, resource selection, and demographics. Wildlife biologists at the leading edge of new developments in the technology and its application have joined forces.
