Editorial Review:

Who can help asking "Why?" when they develop a disease? According to theologian and "medical intuitive" Caroline Myss, Ph.D., and co-worker C. Norman Shealy, M.D., who is a physician, neurosurgeon, and expert on pain and stress management, the answer goes further than a medical explanation. The Creation of Health explores the emotional, physical, and spiritual patterns that form health and the stresses that can cause disease.

Myss identifies eight dysfunctional patterns that lead to illness. Being aware that "negative attitudes create negative responses within the physical body" allows you to make changes toward health after identifying your emotional, psychological, and spiritual stresses. The most interesting chapters discuss specific diseases in terms of lifestyle factors, stress, and psychological patterns and energy factors, with case studies. A heart attack, for example, is "an explosion of energy attempting to break down an emotional barrier ... caused by warehousing fears and anger," says Myss. The authors alternate, rather than co-write, chapters and topics, so you know whose perspective you're reading. The theoretical sections are not easy reading, but the insights you can apply to your own health make the work immensely worthwhile. --Joan Price

humor is good medicine 5 out of 5 stars.
35 of 40 people found this review helpful.

This book shows how remarkable and awesome the human spirit truely is. Cousins gives examples of how humor affected the body in a profound healing manor. After facing cancer and the gloom around the therapies, Cousins turned to humor to help fight the battle and overcame many obstacles in his way. Even those whose lives are not touched by cancer in some way can appreciate the benefits of a little humor therapy. Great book!

Healing Advice 4 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Cousins connects personal experience with scientific research to make a compelling case for the healing power of positive emotions. Norman Cousins was a journalist who was healed through changing his behavior and thoughts. As a followup to his experience he was brought to the UCLA Medical School to do further inquiry into the topic. He interviewed physicians, patients, and family members in his study.

He discusses how his findings were misinterpreted and made to appear shallow by critics. But he felt that he had a valid contribution to make to our understanding of ourselves.

Philosophically he makes some cogent points throughout this book. Personally I love what he writes about Southern California. Consider also his comments on life well lived:
"The clock provides only a technical measurement of how long we live. Far more real than the ticking of time is the way we open up the minutes and invest them with meaning. Death is not the ultimate tragedy in life."

Buy this book! Read it! You'll be thankful you did.

Editorial Review:

Cousins' pionering account of his personal triumph over severe illness was the precurser of hundreds of articles and books dealing with the mind's ability to influence the body's health. Head First depicts Cousins' 10-year quest to find the proof that positive attitudes are actually biochemical factors which combat disease.

Found this book just when I needed it most 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It's amazing that I found this book just at a time in my life where I was really questioning my connection to God. When I found this book it was so interesting and I could relate to so much of it that I couldn't put it down and I finished it in less than a weekend. Before I read this, my spiritual life seemed to suffer because I often questioned if God really loves me and cares about me. I felt very lonely, alone, and unheard. Christel explains why people feel this way and that there are ways we can treat this sort of "spiritual depression." Believe me, I have read a LOT of books by psychics, empaths, spiritual healing, Reiki, etc. A lot of stuff out there is recycled from previous authors. However, Christel's book is unique, no-nonsense, and to the point while still being very compassionate. I KNOW this is a God-send. This book has helped to give me hope and left me wanting to learn more about her healing techniques that I can practice on myself! In fact, talk about synchronicity: just as I finished reading her book, I found out she is doing a workshop next weekend less than an hour away from my home in California and this is a rare event! This is so meant to be and I am lucky to have found Christel's work.

Editorial Review:

A native New Yorker and die-hard skeptic offers a personal look at the development of her medical intuition while serving as a trauma nurse in this riveting memoir. Twenty-five case studies with patients suffering from heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, multiple sclerosis, adult onset diabetes, and other illnesses document the emotional and physiological causes behind patients' symptoms. The interaction of a person's energy system with health and illness is discussed in detail, as are the revelations that medical intuition offers about life, death, healing, and the existence of God. Instructive strategies for increased health and well-being offer ways to increase resistance to disease and reverse the progress of illness.

Excellent Text and Board Review Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I had the luck to take Dr. Seitz's class in behavior medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. His text was one of our's with Wedding also for those familiar. Anyways, his book was absolutely excellent. If was great in that it was brief and to the meat of the subject. It contained many lists and acronyms which I just can't seem to avoid in behavior science. This is a great foundation book to review 1st year medical school Behavioral Science. I thought it was very readable and Dr. Seitz has even thrown in a joke here and there to keep you awake. A great book for review, and a must have for all 1st years. I wish the other Made ridiculously simples were this good. Thanks Dr. Seitz

A treasure of advice and guidance for healing 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This collection of essays by a Who's Who of American Healing started changing my life twenty minutes after I picked it up. The advice of people like Louise Hay and Carl Simonton went straight to the heart of issues we all face with our own health and the health of our loved ones and clients.

Of course, not all of the 37 different takes on the healing process will seem relevant to any individual reader. But it's easy to get what you need; most of the essays are no longer than 1500 words. Authors include writers Lynn Andrews, Norman Cousins, and Ram Dass, visionary MD's Gerald Jampolsky, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Deepak Chopra and Rachel Remen, and alternative healers Sun Bear and Dolores Krieger.

If you were my friend, and if you practiced in any area of health, or faced health issues yourself, I would want you to read this book.

Using Psychology to Enhance Safety Performance 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The focus of The Psychology of Safety Handbook is improving safety performance through psychology and methods of applied behavior analysis. Dr. Geller published the Psychology of Safety in 1996, and this Handbook is an extensive revision of that book.

The Handbook presents new approaches to improving safety performance based on research in applied behavior analysis. These approaches can enhance traditional approaches to workplace safety, or even replace many of the safety program traditions that are commonly ineffective.

Dr. Geller presents academic information in an entertaining and easy-to-read manner. He reviews ten paradigm shifts needed in safety including shifting from government regulation to corporate responsibility, from failure-oriented to achievement oriented mindsets, and from top-down control to bottom-up involvement.

The book covers basic principles of behavioral safety, principles based on years of research as well as "real world" experience. Relevant examples, illustrations, and brief case studies are provided for the reader. Some of the principles include the primacy of behavior, reducing at-risk behaviors, and methods of learning and conditioning.

The author goes into great detail explaining human barriers to safety and effective intervention methods. ABC Analysis is presented as a tool to analyze safety related behaviors, and various intervention methods are described in detail. There are great chapters on intervening as a behavior-change agent (Safety coaching) and intervening with supportive conversation.

There is also a great section about "Actively Caring," which is a concept coined by the author and refers to planned and purposeful behavior directed at improving safety performance. When people actively care for safety, they go beyond the call of duty on behalf of their safety and others. Dr. Geller describes the importance of this behavior, and includes a chapter on how to increase actively caring behavior.

Anyone concerned with safety also wants to maintain and sustain any gains they make. The final chapters of the book detail how to promote high-performance teamwork for safety, how to evaluate for continuous improvement, and how to obtain and maintain involvement in safety. The final chapter of the book reviews 50 principles to follow in making a difference in safety.

In my opinion, Dr. Geller is the world's foremost authority on the psychology of safety. The Psychology of Safety Handbook is a comprehensive, practical, and state-of-the-art study of a complex subject. The methods and approaches described in the book do work when clearly understood and properly applied. This book is useful for students, safety professionals, managers, supervisors, safety committee members, employees and union workers, and is highly recommended for anyone who sincerely desires to make a difference in health and safety.

Editorial Review:

Safety performance cannot be brought to enviable levels without addressing human behavior and attitude effectively. The only comprehensive reference on the psychology of human dynamics of safety, The Psychology of Safety Handbook shows how to apply psychology to improve safety and health in any organization. Revised and expanded from the bestselling book that has become required reading for achieving Certified Safety Professional status, this is the only comprehensive resource on the human dynamics of safety.

During their years of research and healing practice together, Dolores Krieger and her mentor, Dora Kunz, found illness to be caused by specific subtle energy imbalances. The Spiritual Dimension of Therapeutic Touch teaches how to rebalance the body’s energy through touch, visualization, and a spiritual acceptance of life’s inevitable cycle. These exercises can be used both to heal physical pain and to achieve mental and spiritual peace. The authors also examine the important interconnected relationship between healer and patient.
