Editorial Review:

Edward Sarafino's best-selling health psychology text draws from the current research and theories of many disciplines to describe how psychology and health are interconnected using the biopsychosocial model to synthesize all the information together into a straightforward text. While maintaining the widely praised organization and pedagogy of earlier editions, the author updated each chapter. Some of the many topics which have been expanded include the following: the coverage of age, gender, and sociocultural differences in health and health promotion, AIDS prevention, psychoneuroimmunology, and methods of coping. Contemporary and comprehensive information, a variety of interesting readings and activities, and the author's effective narrative continue to engage students in the ever-changing area of health psychology. Here are some reviewers' thoughts about Health Psychology 3rd edition: Dr. Sarafino tells a great story. He makes very complex experimental designs understandable and describes complicated physiological processes in a clear and engaging manner. Josephine F. Wilson - Wittenberg Univ. The author writes in an engaging style and the student is likely to feel that the author speaks directly to the reader. The material is presented in a scholarly manner without overwhelming the reader. Leonard A. Doerfler - Assumption College Sarafino's textbook is the best textbook out there, when compared with the other bestsellers in the field. Sarafino's coverage is more comprehensive than the others, and his narrative is better. Josephine F. Wilson - Wittenberg Univ.

Editorial Review:

Health psychology is developing at a rapid pace, reflecting changes in consumer expectations and developments in the understanding of the effects of pyschological processes on health. This book considers those processes which contribute to illness, such as stress and existing health beliefs, and also how health carers can develop better psychological skills and more sensitivity. This book should be of interest to health professionals - doctors, general practitioners, clinical psychologists and nurses.

I recommend this moving book! 4 out of 5 stars.

The primary story in this book is that of Mark Price, a fifteen year old living with Cystic Fibrosis. The account of this brave and intelligent teenager's experience is vivid and extremely moving. As a future respiratory therapist, Mark's story has taught me about the courage and love shared by ill children, their families, and their caregivers. I would like to thank the author and all those involved in the development and publishing of the book. It is a gift to read!

Tough book to finish, but worth it 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought it was a novel when I first started this book. It's non-fiction.

As you can see from the number of reviewers of this book on this site, this is not one of the most popular of books. Frankly, it took me about three months to get through it, reading sometimes one page at a time.

It's worth it. It's an opportunity for you to enter the lives and the social structure of the children's hospital, that you may not otherwise have occasion to enter, or want to enter.

Author Anderson follows the lives of several patients at Children's Hospital, especially focusing on the life of a cystic fibrosis patient, Mark Price, a teenager.

Several of the patients are too young to speak much, or their injuries prevent them from speaking, so there is really not much conversation in the book.

Gina De Rose is a child with leukemia. Jody Robinson was born of a mother with an apparent drug problem. Brandon Gregory is prematurely born. Freddie Eberly is hit by a vehicle and severely injured. There are several others.

Then, there are the nurses, doctors, and parents of the patients. There are the social workers, the chaplain, the medical procedures, medications, and the whole sociology of the children's hospital.

It's a fascinating story, laid out in diary format, day by day, from December of one year until May of the next year.

Anderson has performed a service by making this book into an informative and interesting experience. It is also heartfelt because of the suffering children. Mark's bravery will affect you no matter how unemotional you are. These are things you usually read about only in medical journals, and who's going to read medical journals?

Editorial Review:

As cancer rates soar, and the issue of "self-deliverance" stays in the headlines, the American pre-occupation with death and dying has never been more intense. In this remarkable new book, Bert Keizer, a Dutch doctor with training in philosophy as well as medicine, probes these concerns with understanding and insight as he shares with us his extraordinary experiences among the terminally ill.

We follow Keizer through his days at a nursing home in Holland as he listens to his patients' stories, documents their battle with disease, and witnesses their taking their own lives in order to die with dignity. All this is given counterpoint by the trio of doctors with whom Keizer works, whose outlooks range from detachment to despair to naive faith in the power of medicine. And throughout are Keizer's brilliant, often startling meditations on the nature of his work--shedding new light on such topics as the placebo effect, the oddness of the verb "to die," and, of course, euthanasia, which is legal in Holland.

A surprise bestseller in Holland, where it was praised for its humanity, scope, and emotional power, Dancing with Mr. D is an inspiring and powerful narrative that vividly frames the issues we will all confront when we make our final journey

Editorial Review:

In 1976, a small group of psychologists urged that more research be done on aspects of health and health care outside the domain of mental health. Today, health psychology is one of the fastest growing divisions of the American Psychological Association; journals and textbooks in increasing numbers are another signal of rapid growth in this field.

Editorial Review:

Biomedicine has become one of the best-modeled domains from several perspectives - artificial intelligence, psychology, and the social sciences; yet few studies have combined these points of view. In this book, the interdisciplinary strengths of cognitive science offer fresh insights into biomedical problem solving.

Cognitive Science in Medicine presents current research that focuses on issues and results in applying techniques from cognitive science to problems in biomedicine. It includes material by researchers who have worked in both areas and is unique in linking models of physician knowledge with models of physician behavior.

David Evans discusses issues of cognitive science in medicine in his introduction; and in a chapter with Cindy Gadd and Harry Pople, deals with the problem of managing coherence and context in medical problem-solving discourse. Vimla Patel, Evans, and Guy Groen provide experimental data that illuminates the role of biomedical knowledge in clinical reasoning; and Patel, Evans, and David Kaufman offer a cognitive science framework for analysis of clinical interviews.

Other contributors and subjects include Clark Glymour on the empirical and representational issues in cognitive and medical science; Alan Lesgold on multilevel models of expertise; Arthur Elstein, James Dodd, and Gerald B. Holzman on the analysis of estrogen replacement decisions among residents; Kenneth R. Hammond, Elizabeth Frederick, Nichole Robillard, and Doreen Victor on the features of the student-teacher dialog in medicine; Naomi Rodolitz and William J. Clancey on tutoring for strategic knowledge; Paul J. Feltovich, Rand J. Spiro, and Richard L. Coulson on the foundations of misunderstanding in established medical knowledge; John K. Vries, Evans, and Peretz Shoval on the development of semantic networks for medical information retrieval; and John Bruer, with a preface on the implications of cognitive-scientific studies for medical education.

David A. Evans is Assistant Professor of Linguistics and Computer Science at Carnegie-Mellon University and Vimla L. Patel is Associate Professor of Medicine and Educational Psychology at McGill University. A Bradford Book.
