Using Psychology to Enhance Safety Performance 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The focus of The Psychology of Safety Handbook is improving safety performance through psychology and methods of applied behavior analysis. Dr. Geller published the Psychology of Safety in 1996, and this Handbook is an extensive revision of that book.

The Handbook presents new approaches to improving safety performance based on research in applied behavior analysis. These approaches can enhance traditional approaches to workplace safety, or even replace many of the safety program traditions that are commonly ineffective.

Dr. Geller presents academic information in an entertaining and easy-to-read manner. He reviews ten paradigm shifts needed in safety including shifting from government regulation to corporate responsibility, from failure-oriented to achievement oriented mindsets, and from top-down control to bottom-up involvement.

The book covers basic principles of behavioral safety, principles based on years of research as well as "real world" experience. Relevant examples, illustrations, and brief case studies are provided for the reader. Some of the principles include the primacy of behavior, reducing at-risk behaviors, and methods of learning and conditioning.

The author goes into great detail explaining human barriers to safety and effective intervention methods. ABC Analysis is presented as a tool to analyze safety related behaviors, and various intervention methods are described in detail. There are great chapters on intervening as a behavior-change agent (Safety coaching) and intervening with supportive conversation.

There is also a great section about "Actively Caring," which is a concept coined by the author and refers to planned and purposeful behavior directed at improving safety performance. When people actively care for safety, they go beyond the call of duty on behalf of their safety and others. Dr. Geller describes the importance of this behavior, and includes a chapter on how to increase actively caring behavior.

Anyone concerned with safety also wants to maintain and sustain any gains they make. The final chapters of the book detail how to promote high-performance teamwork for safety, how to evaluate for continuous improvement, and how to obtain and maintain involvement in safety. The final chapter of the book reviews 50 principles to follow in making a difference in safety.

In my opinion, Dr. Geller is the world's foremost authority on the psychology of safety. The Psychology of Safety Handbook is a comprehensive, practical, and state-of-the-art study of a complex subject. The methods and approaches described in the book do work when clearly understood and properly applied. This book is useful for students, safety professionals, managers, supervisors, safety committee members, employees and union workers, and is highly recommended for anyone who sincerely desires to make a difference in health and safety.

Editorial Review:

Safety performance cannot be brought to enviable levels without addressing human behavior and attitude effectively. The only comprehensive reference on the psychology of human dynamics of safety, The Psychology of Safety Handbook shows how to apply psychology to improve safety and health in any organization. Revised and expanded from the bestselling book that has become required reading for achieving Certified Safety Professional status, this is the only comprehensive resource on the human dynamics of safety.

Current, relevent, and possibly the future of medicine 5 out of 5 stars.

People know smoking is bad for them, yet they continue to smoke. People want to lose weight but refuse to diet and exercise. Drinking and driving is still the major cause of fatal motor vehicle accidents despite everyone knowing how dangerous it is.

Medicine can only do so much to help people stay healthy, ultimate responsibility rests upon the individual. Yet self determination requires behavior modification and while one may be determined they just cannot modify.

In the past 20 years great strides have been made in the 'soft sciences' of psychology and social science looking for insight into the human thinking process and how innate ability and environmental exposure affects it. This book adeptly looks into this research and provides a broad basic report on the current state of behavioral theory.

In short, the text reports the current nexus between science and philosophy and provides edification regarding best current understanding science has.

High point includes interesting discussion regarding relationship between Health Disparities and behavior.

Editorial Review:

Over the past two decades, investigators have learned more about the links between health and behavior.

Health and Behavior reviews our improved understanding of the complex interplay among biological, psychological, and social influences and explores findings suggested by recent research. The book covers three main areas:

* What do biological, behavioral, and social sciences contribute to our understanding of health-including cardiovascular, immune system and brain functioning, behaviors that influence health, the role of social networks and socioeconomic status, and more.
* What can we learn from applied research on interventions to improve the health of individuals, families, communities, organizations, and larger populations?
* How can we expeditiously translate research findings into application?

With the perspective that individual willpower is only one thread in the fabric of health, the committee offers an ecological approach to health and behavior.

This is a classic book which describes how two people's bodies physiologically respond when they interact. This is important stuff, considering how profoundly blood pressure can rise with a simple conversation. Lynch put years into exploring this.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive volume explores the role of behaviour and psychology in the development, progression, and treatment of a wide range of medical disorders, discussing in detail the health psychology application to each of the 17 ICD9 chapters of diagnostic classification. Health psychology researchers offer an applied clinical perspective in describing the prevalence, prevention, primary, secondary and tertiary treatment, and future directions for research of prevalent disorders, including infectious diseases, endocrine, metabolic, nutritional, and immune disorders, congenital abnormalities, among others. This practical sourcebook should be a useful reference for health psychologists and medical professionals and is the first of three volumes that are both comprehensive and specific as they relate to the entire field of health psychology. Topics discussed in the second and third volumes include theories, models, and philosophical underpinnings on which the field of health psychology is based as well as specific health and behavior issues facing any scientist or clinician. Although this set could be used as an encyclopedia, a manual, and a comprehensive text, it is intended to encompass a newly developing, rapidly expanding, scientifically validating, and clinically recognized area concerned with human health and healthcare delivery.

A compassionate book about intriguing psychiatric disorders. 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Ford and Feldman have written a fascinating exploration of the complexities of factitious disorders, and they display a degree of clinical intuition seldom seen in today's world of high-tech medicine. Rich in anecdotes, this book holds the reader in thrall from the first page. Who could forget Jenny....or Abby...or the Gasoline Injector! Yet make no mistake: the authors do not use tabloid tactics to ensnare the reader. Instead, they teach us a great deal about psychic pain.

On behalf of those who feign illness, they reveal some of the reasons behind the desperate bids for attention. They also expose the frightening, criminal aspects of Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy, a disease often misinterpreted by medical practitioners.

This collaboration reminds this reader of the writings of psychiatrist and best-selling author, Dr. M. Scott Peck. Like Peck, the authors have the humility to admit their mistakes, and at times, they share a bit of sly humor with us. They never lose sight of the dignity of their patients, which affirms their connection to us all.

A book such as this is a remarkable find, as it is written with both scientific and literary expertise. The empathy of these academicians simply cannot be taught in medical school. You would not want to miss this one.

Editorial Review:

A series of case studies are presented which explore the psychological reasons why a patient fakes illness. The aim of the volume is to provide clinical practitioners and other health care professionals with guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of those with factitious disorders.

Editorial Review:

In Your Child in the Balance, child psychiatrist, Kevin Kalikow examines the highly topical and thorny question of whether and when to prescribe psychiatric medication to children. As parents, are we too ready to run to our pediatrician for Ritalin when our child shows the first sign of inattention at school? Or do we instead shy away from our doctor's recommendation to consider an anti-depressant for a chronically sad and withdrawn teenager? Among the ever-growing outcry that psychiatric medicines are over-prescribed to children and adolescents today, how is a parent to know whether medication is the right treatment for their troubled child?

Dr. Kalikow tackles these questions with the sensitivity and insight of years of experience helping families through the thicket of research and opinion to find the right answer for their child. Through many colorful vignettes, he explores our efforts to protect our children from the inevitable hurts and disappointments of childhood, and the role that medication can play in that attempt. On the other side, Kalikow shows us our determination to have our children succeed or fail on their own, the way we had to do, even to the point of refusing the medication that might help them overcome a serious and potentially chronic disability.

Dr. Kalikow guides readers through the maze of possible treatment decisions--the many different families of psychiatric medication, alternative treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and perhaps the most difficult decision of no treatment at all. He closes the book by examining one family's difficult journey to the decision to medicate their acutely anxious daughter.

Your Child in the Balance: An Insider's Guide to the Psychiatric Medicine Dilemma is an important and timely book that will hit home to every parent who has seen their child in pain and asked themselves, "I wonder if medication might help."

Editorial Review:

Behavioral economics is a rapidly developing area of psychological science that has synergistically merged microeconomic concepts with behavioral research methods. A driving force behind the growth of behavioral economics has been its recent application to behaviors that significantly affect health. The book examines the latest behavioral economic research on smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, obesity, gambling, and other poor health habits, and explores the implications for individual and community interventions and policy directions.

This innovative book describes new concepts and methods developed in behavioral economics and applies them to understanding health behavior change. The richness of behavioral economic concepts provides novel methods and measures that lend to an understanding of health behavior that is different from previous work in the field.

Featuring contributions from experimental and clinical psychologists and economists, this book will be of interest to a broad range of students and professionals concerned with health behavior, including researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, as well as psychologists, educators, and all those who work with people who are currently attempting to make positive health and lifestyle changes.
