This book should be titled "Total Guide to Nutrition AND Fitness". Ms. Bauer does a great job of explaining nutrition and it's role in maintaining one's health. She also covers exercise, pregnancy, eating disorders, and dieting. Quite a complete book. Don't let the "Idiot's" title fool you--this book goes into detail with many topics and serves as much more than just an intro. Bravo Ms. Bauer!

Editorial Review:

You're no idiot, of course. You take a vitamin every day, sometimes order the fruit cup instead of the cheesecake, and even take the stairs now and then. But when it comes to working the five food groups into your diet and staying on a realistic exercise program, you feel like you're ordering sushi without a picture menu. Put down that bag of chips! The Complete Idiot's Guide to Total Nutrition, Second Edition, gives you everything you need to know about eating healthy and staying fit--a nutrition tune-up for life! You'll fel confident reading nutrition labels, planning your meals and your shopping, and managing your weight. Inside this Complete Idiot's Guide, you'll find:

Not for beginners 1 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I was really disappointed with this book - I bought it about a year ago and # of times used = 0. I was hoping this would be more traditional, familiar meals that could be prepared in 30 minutes, but no such luck. Half of the recipes have titles that I've never heard of, and most have ingredients that you wouldn't find at your every day grocery store. I wouldn't even know what would be a suitable substitute. Nothing even sounds appetizing. If you were already familiar with cooking, this book may be of more use, but as a beginner looking for some quick, healthy recipes for my new family, this did not work out.

Editorial Review:

The information age has brought a much greater awareness of the need to eat nutritiously, but less time to put that awareness into practice. The Big Book of Quick and Healthy Recipes shows how even on busy days, readers can create meals that not only taste great but are nourishing and healthful as well. Recipes are grouped by season, emphasize use of fresh, local, seasonal ingredients, and feature ingredients known to have potent powers as detoxifiers, energy boosters, and healers. A wide range of dietary preferences is covered, with vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free alternatives given where suitable.

The Very Best Nutrition Book 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I own other nutrition books, and this is my favorite! In nursing school, my nutrition instructor, who was a registered dietitician with many years of experience, said that this was the best nutrition book on the market. Compared to the other books I have seen, I would agree. It is a wealth of information and includes both American and Canadian guidelines. There is a wonderful food composition table appendix included in the book that is very thorough nutritionally. The book covers carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and amino acids, digestion and absorption, metabolism and energy balance, overweight, underweight, and weight control, vitamins, water and minerals, nutrition through lifespan: pregnancy and infancy, childhood and adolescence, later adulthood, and many chapters on nutrition for health care issues such as renal failure, and diabetes mellitus. If I were not a nurse, I would want to own this book just for my own personal reference. I would advise anyone, whether in health care or not, to pick up a copy of this book.

Editorial Review:

This introductory normal and clinical nutrition text designed to meet the needs of the nursing curriculum takes an organ systems/disease states approach to clinical nutrition and presents nutrition at a basic, applied level, with little detailed physiology or biochemistry.

Food is Medicine 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I tend to be highly skeptical about this kind of book, mainly because they usually present some sort of idealized fantasy of a health-conscious and simple Japan where everyone is deeply in tune with the rhythms of nature, whilst I know from many years of experience living in Japan that your average Japanese person is much more likely to sit down to a steaming pile of fried chicken, reconstituted ramen and a few cans of beer rather than ocean-harvested kombu and mountain vegetables gently simmered followed by a sweet cup of amazake. However I was pleasantly surprised when the authors stated up front that "Japanese people don't eat this way", and acknowledged that many of these foods will be more readily available in an American health food store than in a Japanese supermarket.

With that fresh start, I was able to enjoy "Japanese Foods that Heal" for what it is, a brilliant guide to eighteen traditional Japanese ingredients that are powerhouses of health, with medicinal properties that strengthen the human body and provide resources and defenses against all manner of illnesses. Each ingredient is considered in-depth, talking about the traditional harvesting/creation methods, the known medicinal properties of that ingredient, and the traditional healing powers associated with it. The authors are careful to state what is a proven effect of the food and what is only a "potential" effect. Some of the foods, such as miso and green tea, are quite familiar and well-known for their health value. Others, such as soy sauce and the sweetener mirin, were more of a surprise, as I had not thought of them as having any particular value other than as a flavoring agent. Some of the ingredients I had never heard of, such as seitan and mizu ame, which the author admits you would need to either make yourself or find at a specialized store.

While there are recipes for each ingredient included, "Japaneses Foods that Heal" cannot really be considered a cookbook. About five or six simple recipes with no photographs are all you get for each item, and the bulk of the text is educating you about the food itself. While the recipes are easy to make and delicious, I was more intrigued by the concept put forward of using these foods in regular recipes replacing items of little nutritional value, such as refined salt or white sugar, with more nutritious substitutes like mirin or the salty picked-plum umeboshi. Definitely something to give a try.

The only drawback to this book is that the authors reinforce the stereotype that eating healthy means eating expensive. When they talk about soy sauce, they are quick to distinguish between the mass-produced condiment available anywhere, and the healthy, hand-processed variety only made in few places and only available at specialty stores for quite a bit more than you would expect to pay. The cheap stuff, they say, isn't worth your time. The same story is told for almost every food, with a lengthy description of its traditional, healthy processing method followed by a disclaimer saying how the majority is now chemically produced in factories, and you will have to search out and be prepared to pay for the good stuff.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive and authoritative guide to the healing powers of Japanese foods, this book includes an in-depth look at over seventeen traditional ingredients, including miso, shiitake, toasted sesame oil, tofu, amazake, and seitan. Each food item is given its own chapter, which includes a detailed discussion of the nutritional and medicinal benefits, how to make it or buy it, cooking with it, and recipes featuring it. This book also features a pronunciation guide, which is great for ordering from restaurants or shops, and a guide to composing meals.

Editorial Review:

Fast Food Nation meets The World Is Flat in this eye-opening look at the obesity epidemic.

Today, the planet’s 1.3 billion overweight people by far outnumber the 700 million who are undernourished. This figure would have seemed ludicrous just fifty years ago, when hunger was the world’s most pressing nutritional problem.

In The World Is Fat, Barry Popkin argues that the fattening of the human race is not simply about that next cheeseburger; rather, it is a result of an unprecedented collision of human biology with trends in technology, globalization, government policy, and the food industry that are changing how we eat and how we live.

Popkin, whose expertise in both nutrition and economics makes him uniquely qualified to write this book, compares our lifestyles today with those of half a century ago through the stories of five families living in the United States, Mexico, and India. He shows how increasing access to media and exposure to advertising, a powerful food industry, the rise of Wal-Mart like shopping centers, and a dramatic decline in physical activity are clashing with millions of years of human evolution, creating a world of overweight people with debilitating health problems such as diabetes. Ultimately, Popkin contends that widespread obesity is less a result of poor individual dietary choices than about a hi-tech, interconnected world in which governments and multinational corporations have extraordinary power to shape our everyday lives.

Pretty darn good 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Though the book is truly outdated by now, last copyright 1997, it was fairly well done. There are website links at the end of each chapter and useful info tidbits throughout. It is a complete basic information guide to Nutrition: the basics plus nutrition for disease states. I believe it being outdated is why there was not more discussion in the basic chapters about overconsumption of proteins like we're seeing with Adkins. It definitely needs a NEW edition with more discussion of what's going on in Nutrition today, problems etc. And a modernization of the pictures and text itself would really make it stand out. And, I would put links throughout the text, not just at the end of the chapter. This could really be a fun book if they got someone who knew how to change it right. I think it could be a best seller for Nutrition textbooks.

All the charts were really good, but I think some details were left out, so.. a little more explanation, explicitness, and maybe combine some of the calculation charts and more of how to use them. The more I write needs of improvement, the more I wonder if my pretty darn good rating is accurate.

Editorial Review:

Textbook focuses on critical thinking and features cultural applications, clinical calculation boxes, special diet tables, Internet sites, case studies, NCLEX-style questions, wellness tips, and an extensive glossary. Editorial Review:

The Clinical Dietitian's Essential Pocket Guide is an up-to-date and concise pocket-sized reference that clinical dietitians can tailor to their own practice. Part I contains chapters covering nutritional assessment, life stage assessment, and nutrition support. Part II includes seven chapters on the major nutritionally relevant diseases. Appendices on food and drug interactions, laboratory assessment, and an appendix of useful reference materials round out the book. Within each disease chapter, a uniform format includes sections on disease process, treatment and nutritional intervention, and patient education. A unique aspect of The Clinical Dietitian's Essential Pocket Guide is space for users to add their own resources or references, on the blank pages that are included in each chapter.
