Nutrition in pregnancy and lactation 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My edition is now an antique so this review is not current. I was fortunate enough to have the author as instructor in a course with the same title at UW School of Nursing in 1980 and I can safely say it is the single course which has made a daily difference in my life ever since. Worthington-Roberts has great integrity and this permeates a piece of professional literature in a way one seldom sees. I was thrilled to see that the book is available in a current edition and would recommend anything by this author on the subject of maternal and child nutrition without reservation. Today I practice as a staff midwife and breastfeeding specialist in a hospital in Norway but still find English language sources to be the best on such topics as this. There are now many, many books on pregnancy, breastfeeding and lactation, but there will always be a place on my bookshelf for this one.

Editorial Review:

Nutrition in Pregnancy and Lactation provides balanced, comprehensive coverage of nutrition needs during and between the times of these unique physiologic events, as well as offering extensive practical information on counseling and support for breastfeeding mothers and their infants.

Look up a food you dislike and you will want to eat it! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Here's a beautiful book for your kitchen baker's rack with lots of recipes. Written in an easy to read format, including large, colorful photos of foods, this guide to healthy eating does everything for you but cook the food! This book provides the motivation to try new foods and recipes. It goes even further than just listing foods by categories to tell of their benefits for the body; it lists ailments and the specific foods to eat to combat them along with page numbers of the recommended recipes!

Here are the chapters: 1) Guide to Healing Foods 2) Foods for Common Ailments 3) Healing Recipes 4) Diet in Practice 5) A Guide to the Immune System 6) Superfoods for the Immune System 7) Coping with Common Ailments and 8) Immune Foods in Practice.

Here's a great quote from the foreword that is key: "...diets based on fresh or minimally processed foods, above all wholegrain starchy foods combined with legumes/pulses such as beans, and a variety of vegetables and fruits, rich in vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, essential fats, and fiber, and which are correspondingly low in highly processed foods, total fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt, and also alcohol, protect the health of all systems of the body. And yes, this includes the nervous system of which the brain is one part, the source of our thoughts, feelings and beliefs."...

Don't be like so many who are sadly digging their own graves with their forks and spoons! Eat wisely and mindfully. (And I am speaking to myself too.) o8E
Soar!

Editorial Review:

This timely guidebook is divided into two major sections, each written by a different expert. In part one, “Food Is Medicine,” Pierre Jean Cousin argues that certain foods not only prevent specific medical conditions, but can often alleviate or even heal their symptoms. Cousin offers a practical overview of the curative properties of foods and drinks, organized with charts and thorough cross-referencing for instant access to the vital facts.
In “Eat for Immunity,” Kirsten Hartvig explains exactly why a healthy immune system is the key to good health—and shows how, with the right foods, we can prevent disease and fight infection. By following her simple principles, and making the tasty, nutritious recipes here part of an everyday diet, readers can boost their body's defense system, look and feel better, and enjoy increased vitality. For ease of use, all the information is indexed by food, ailment, and recipe.

what it is 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 31 people found this review helpful.

I wanted to lose about 10-15 lbs. Everyone I knew (thin people overall)were suddenly doing the no-carb thing. But as someone who has never been on and never wants to go on a diet I could not get myself to accept that grains are my downfall and meat is the answer. I was leary of trying to, quote, trick my body into thinking it is starving, during an induction period that was being recommended by the other diets. I wanted a diet that would be heart healthy long-term and that I would want to share as a way of life with my children. I believe that the no-carb folk are motivated by the quick results of the induction period, not as much due to restricted carbs as restricted calories. My sister wouldn't eat a single grape the first few weeks.

But they are a convincing lot and I decided to take out a few of the popular diet books from the library and decide my path to a healthier/leaner life at leisure. The clear winner was The Way to Eat. It provides the motivation to break the bad habits (sugars, bad carbs, too few veggies, junk food). It acknowledged the existence of bad carbs and without blacking the name of all carbs. In fact it differntiates the good, bad or ugly in all the food groups with it's recommendations. The diet (and its presentation in the book)is balanced, positive, and backed by the bulk of professional studies over the course of years. A fun read, it made getting on track easy and delicious. So now, with the right foods on my shelves, I have returned all the books to the library's shelves and am here on Amazon.com to purchase my own copy of Dr. Katz's book. And I plan to share it with my no-carb crowd!

Note to the reviewer a few down who complains that the reveiws are from CT and MD: your e-mail was so not helpful...it had nothing whatever to do with the content of the book! Some free advice: grow up, stop being a nudge, and read the book before you comment.

Editorial Review:

The Way to Eat is a comprehensive guide to a lifetime of eating well in support of three goals: overall good health, weight control and the enjoyment of food. The Way to Eat helps readers identify the common barriers to healthful eating in the modern nutritional environment, including busy schedules, the easy access to fast, fatty foods and our predisposition to prefer fats and sweets. Strategies for overcoming barriers are stressed.

dry as toast 1 out of 5 stars.

if this isnt required for a course, i would highly discourage anyone from purchasing this book. contains necessary information but is poorly written (does not flow well, authors try to use informal language) and is structured in a way that is not conducive to learning.

Good overview of Community Nutrition 4 out of 5 stars.

I found this book to be informative with many good graphics and photos. There are a lot of statistics and many internet links provided for further information or research.

older ed. vs. new ed 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 4 people found this review helpful.

this book seems to be fairly close to the newer edition, but with a couple of difference. I have noticed some case study questions are different. I have really read it that much yet though.

Editorial Review:

This text incorporates an entrepreneurial approach and focuses on community nutritionists in action in the areas of the community, policy making, and delivering and designing community programs.

Richard never needs explaining 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Great buy for some lucky person. Richard goes into great detail and is very personal about health concerns, and exercise, and is very chatty and friendly in this great book.

Depresses me 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Richards Simmons diet is far to hard to do. He claims it is easy but I have not been able to do it because I feel hungry all the time. I think it is sad that he believes people have to eat this way in order to lose weight. No one can live hungry all their life and when I saw he has a book called "Still hungry after all these years" I knew it would never work for me.
Still Hungry After All These Years: My Story

So I became a little depressed by this and have gone in search of help else where . Good luck to you if you bought this book, hope it works for you.
