Editorial Review:

Caring for a person with dementia is a difficult and often- overwhelming task. In addition to the inevitable decline in memory and physical function, most persons with dementia develop one or more troublesome behavior problems, such as depression, fearfulness, sleep disturbances, paranoia, or physical aggression at some point in their disease. Behavioral challenges in dementia are highly idiosyncratic. No two patients are alike, and interventions that work well with one person are often ineffective with another. Caregivers often become stuck: either unable to figure out how best to help their loved one, or unable to consistently implement positive practices they know would improve their situation. This book offers caregivers a set of practical and flexible tools to enable them become more resilient in the face of difficulty and change. McCurry teaches caregivers how to take advantage of their own creativity and inner resources to develop strategies that will work in their unique situations. She presents her set of five core principles and then brings them to life through vignettes. Anyone who lives, works, or comes in contact with a person who has dementia will benefit from this volume.

Caring for Caregivers 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is indeed "a practical guide" for getting through each day-- in a way that only caregivers can understand. The information in it has made my days better than they would have been otherwise. The chapters on communication and behavioral changes have helped in developing caregiver skills; and there are other helpful chapters on improving the home set-up and managing problems with family members. I was especially impressed with the detailed information put into this book on everything from adult role changes to getting the keys back from your parent. It worked for me!

Starr has outdone herself with this book! All of the tips are "real life" answers to everyday problems in dealing with the elderly, and people of all ages. Her tips and sugestions don't require additional money or effort, they incorporate everyday scenarios with everyday ideas. Loved it!

uplifting, respectful and relevant 5 out of 5 stars.

I lost my grandfather recently to Alzheimer's disease and am currently repeating the same terrible ordeal with my grandmother. It is a long, long, painful journey and many questions and concerns have burdened my family while dealing with this affliction. Ms. Calo-oy's book provides an exhaustive reference for the myriads of scenarios and situations a caregiver will encounter. This book is written from a sensitive and respectful point of view that not only addresses the loved one's many needs, but the often unknown and misunderstood needs of the caregiver as well. I found this book very encouraging and uplifting. I recommend this book to any individual or institution that is involved with caregiving!

Editorial Review:

In her widely acclaimed Doing Things, Jitka M. Zgola offered practical and much-needed advice for those caring for persons with Alzheimer disease. Now, in Care That Works, Zgola shows how caregivers can better meet the demanding challenges of their job by building and improving their personal relationships with those in their care. Instead of simply prescribing approaches, Care That Works gives caregivers the information with which they can develop their own approaches, evaluate their effectiveness, and continue to grow in skill and insight.

Zgola explains that optimal dementia care involves three elements: a good relationship between the caregiver and the person who has dementia, a safe and nurturing environment, and meaningful activities. Evident throughout the book is Zgola's gift for compassionately portraying the difficulties faced by people with dementia and then suggesting ways to act in a manner that accords such people the respect and dignity they deserve. Topics that receive special attention include communicating with persons who have language deficits and coping with problem behaviors -- two critical problems in dementia care.

Praise for Jitka M. Zgola's Doing Things:

"A valuable resource for professionals, paraprofessionals, and family members working with Alzheimer's disease patients." -- Educational Gerontology

"This guide shows how to establish a positive environment for Alzheimer's patients by providing social interaction and productive activity, with an emphasis on treating patients with empathy, courtesy, and dignity." -- Health Progress

This is a great book for all who work with the elderly. I would also encourage people to purchase the video. I am a Staff Development Coordinator in a Subacute facility. I have this scheduled for a inservice training later in the month. Enjoy

Based on extensive original research and clinical experience, the editors and their contributors have developed strategies and techniques that work in both institutional and home settings. Their approach is also appropriate for caregiving activities other than bathing. Readers will find practice guidelines, transfer techniques, lists of suppliers of bathing equipment, and the description of a complete training program for direct caregivers. Illustrations, charts, checklists, and relevant websites are provided throughout.
