Caring for a person with dementia is a difficult and often- overwhelming task. In addition to the inevitable decline in memory and physical function, most persons with dementia develop one or more troublesome behavior problems, such as depression, fearfulness, sleep disturbances, paranoia, or physical aggression at some point in their disease. Behavioral challenges in dementia are highly idiosyncratic. No two patients are alike, and interventions that work well with one person are often ineffective with another. Caregivers often become stuck: either unable to figure out how best to help their loved one, or unable to consistently implement positive practices they know would improve their situation. This book offers caregivers a set of practical and flexible tools to enable them become more resilient in the face of difficulty and change. McCurry teaches caregivers how to take advantage of their own creativity and inner resources to develop strategies that will work in their unique situations. This book is indeed "a practical guide" for getting through each day-- in a way that only caregivers can understand. The information in it has made my days better than they would have been otherwise. The chapters on communication and behavioral changes have helped in developing caregiver skills; and there are other helpful chapters on improving the home set-up and managing problems with family members. I was especially impressed with the detailed information put into this book on everything from adult role changes to getting the keys back from your parent. It worked for me!

Starr has outdone herself with this book! All of the tips are "real life" answers to everyday problems in dealing with the elderly, and people of all ages. Her tips and sugestions don't require additional money or effort, they incorporate everyday scenarios with everyday ideas. Loved it!

I lost my grandfather recently to Alzheimer's disease and am currently repeating the same terrible ordeal with my grandmother. It is a long, long, painful journey and many questions and concerns have burdened my family while dealing with this affliction. Ms. Calo-oy's book provides an exhaustive reference for the myriads of scenarios and situations a caregiver will encounter. This book is written from a sensitive and respectful point of view that not only addresses the loved one's many needs, but the often unknown and misunderstood needs of the caregiver as well. I found this book very encouraging and uplifting. I recommend this book to any individual or institution that is involved with caregiving!

I simply love this book! As a practicing geriatic psychiatrist, it has provided me relevant clinical information and the latest research on the subject. With more than 600 pages, this book offers comprehensive discussion on assessment, diagnosis, medical and neurologic conditions (manifesting as dementia), and treatment intervention.

This is a great book for all who work with the elderly. I would also encourage people to purchase the video. I am a Staff Development Coordinator in a Subacute facility. I have this scheduled for a inservice training later in the month. Enjoy
