I first read this book during my college years (in the late 70's) I own it since and loved it ever since, to this day. It has been my companion and informed me in my early realitionships, pregnancy, motherhood, and parenting of a girl child. I resonate with every bit of it and appreciate the empathy and soulfulness of the treatment.
I have to say that I'm familiar with and appreciate both the psychonalyitic framing and experience. I also spent my early adult life in Buenos Aires, where the author lived and wrote this book (which I own in the original language). I'm coming back to this book with my daughter in puberty and myself looking for a second child in middle age.
As a science student in Buenos Aires that became a university professor in the US, I also cherish the author's understanding that a full life for a woman has both room for relationship, motherhood, parenting, and a fulfilling job.
This is my most beloved book. I gave it to my yoga instructor, an adorable woman whose day job is in children's mental health care, and whose education is in psychoanalysis.
Editorial Review:
As illuminating today as it was when it was first released, Marie Langer's work represents a departure from mainstream psychoanalytic approaches to female sexuality. Anticipating contemporary feminist psychoanlaytic concerns, she argues that economic institutions and cultural values must be altered to permit women full participation in creative and productive activities if women are to accept their maternal role without conflict or resentment. Within tnis context, Langer's book presents a rare exploration of psychosomatic disorders related to female reproductive life.
