This book is by far the best guide to mind/body techniques to healing and recovery of the body and spirit. Dr. Benson's Mind/Body Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconness Hospital in Boston is widely respected and uses all the techniques made available here. Indispensible.

Most Comprehensive Wellness Book 5 out of 5 stars.

The Wellness Book has been the standard in Stress Management and Mind/Body Medicine for both the general lay public and health care practitioners for a decade, and continues to be head and shoulders above other such publications! . . . Healthful Living 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The Wellness Book has been extremely helpful to me and is one of the best investments I have made in myself. I first used this book 10 years ago and was able to establish some healthful living goals and actions for myself that improved my physical conditioning immensely. I continue to use it today. What I really like about this book is that it enables each reader to really focus in on their individual lifestyles, needs, and habits and develop specific, realistic, and individualized action plans for improved and healthful living. The improved physical condition that I realized as a result of focusing on a plan and actions enabled me to climb mountains in the Sierra Nevada. I have also used techniques in this book to successfully address anxiety. This week I pulled the book off of my shelf and am going at it again. I am having fun with this exercise because I can compare my "10 loves" from 10 years ago to my "10 loves" of today and put a plan in place to realize them. Many thanks to the authors for such insightful and all emcompassing work. This book is as useful and current today as it was the day it was written.

Editorial Review:

The author combines the techniques from his bestselling Relaxation Response with other behavioral medicine approaches--such as stress management, exercise, and nutrition--to provide an accessible and complete guide for enhancing health and dealing with most illnesses. Fully illustrated.

mental imagery 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I enjoy reading the book: his patient illness and the recovery made after following Dr. Simonton's expectations for healing his cancer. 1st : chimio therapy, consuming good food, mental imagery and faith are 4 important factors in healing. He gave many examples of changing attitudes for healing.

Excellent information to guide you through cancer 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I started reading this book as I began chemotherapy for breast cancer. I found myself agreeing with many of the case histories, the desperation, the search for a way to improve not only my outlook on the cure by being infused with so many harmful chemicals, but most of all by finding a spiritual, meditative approach to healing. Simonton's book contains many helpful hints and instructions and I am on my way to recovery.

Editorial Review:

A doctor and his patient chronicle their discovery of a miraculous cure for a rare form of cancer, outlining the Simonton Program as it is experienced today by patients and their families and offering new research on its success. 40,000 first printing.

Editorial Review:

Praise For WHEN THE BODY SAYS NO

"Once thought to be in the domain of genes, our health and behavior have recently been revealed to be controlled by our perception of the environment and our beliefs. Gabor Mate, M.D., skillfully blends recent advances in biomedicine with the personal insights of his patients to provide empowering insight into how deeply developmental experiences shape our health, behavior, attitudes, and relationships. A must-read for health professionals and lay readers seeking awareness of how the mind controls health."
-- Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., cellular biologist

"The interviewees' stories are often touching and haunting. . . . Mate carefully explains the biological mechanisms that are activated when stress and trauma exert a powerful influence on the body, and he backs up his claims with compelling evidence from the field. . . . Both the lay and specialist reader will be grateful for the final chapter, 'The Seven A's of Healing,' in which Mate presents an open formula for healing and the prevention of illness from hidden stress."
-- Quill & Quire

"Medical science searches high and low for the causes of cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and a host of other conditions. Yet it often ignores one of the most pervasive factors leading to illness: the hidden stresses embedded in our daily lives. In this important book, Dr. Gabor Mate combines a passionate examination of his patients' life histories with lucid explanations of the science behind mind-body unity. He makes a compelling argument for the importance of understanding stress both in the causation of disease and in the restoration of health."
-- Richard Earle, Ph.D.
Director of the Canadian Institute of Stress/ Hans Selye Foundation

Praise For SCATTERED

Editorial Review:

In The Healing Mind, Dr. Paul Martin, a renowned professor behavioral biology, asserts that Wolfe's words are closer to the truth than we might imagine. Long the stuff of poetry and folklore, there is increasing scientific evidence that the brain and the immune system are inextricably linked. Dr. Martin illustrates with remarkable clarity that biological and psychological links that do indeed exist between mind and body--links that have in intricately constructed by evolution over the millennia, links that, when frayed or severed, are the root cause of more problems that you might imagine.

Drawing together the latest biological and medical findings, The Healing Mind explains how we can at last reconcile many commonplace notions about "psychosomatic" illness and stress with a modern scientific understanding of how the mind and body affect each other. Martin makes impressive use of literary references to illustrate the degree to which we commonly (and accurately) observe the link between health and psyche. Here, presented in a fascinating and uniquely accessible manner, are the latest scientific solutions to some ancient puzzles concerning the relationship between brain, behavior, immunity, and disease.

"Joined-up writing!" 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I found McDougall's book challenging, enlightening and encouraging in developing a "joined-up" approach to the mind-body split. I particularly appreciated the case histories she described with such humanity and sympathy for the sufferer. As a primary care counsellor, I meet somapsychotic symptomotology on a daily basis. This book has given me courage to make imaginative leaps of interpretation rooted in the individuality of each person's unique self expression. In a recent case history discussion for a Master's programme, I found McDougall's concepts invaluable in helping to formulate and express the complexities this area of work presents.

Another Joyce McDougall's masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Joyce McDougall's personal perspective on mind-body interrelatedness and psychoanalysis maker her one of the most prolific authors in the field. You can trace the deep influence of Winnicott's theories and various french authors (such as J.Laplanche, A.Green and J.Lacan) on her work, moving from clinical observations to metapsychological explorations. Her main proposal, desafection as an alternative mechanism to repression or forclusion in the patient's dinamics and psychosomatic economy, is a major (and quite controversial)contribution to previous approaches on somatization.

Her style is fluid (unlike "The Many Faces of Eros", which centers on technical issues), including plenty of clinical vignettes and personal experiences.

A "must have" for anyone interested in somatization and psychosomatic phenomenon, specially for those in therapeutic field.

An excellent aid in the primary care setting! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is a wonderful overview of both common and difficult issues in the clinic setting, and very relevant to outpatient practice. It is easy reading, but full of practical tips and up-to-date references. I would recommend it to every primary care resident as an aid in their training.

behavior is medicine 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I teach med students and residents and find that this book is one of the best resources to describe the overlay between behavior and physiology. So many students say "well, that psychology stuff is just intuitive......I know what I'd feel" without recognizing that what they feel isn't the point - what their patients feel is! This book builds the necessary bridge between intuition and research.
My students express surprise that there IS a science behind behavior and there ARE ways to break bad news to patients and there IS a link between psychology and physiology (perhaps best illustrated by the great flow diagram on stress).
This book summarizes material well and uses good case examples. If I were going to write a book on behavioral science in medicine, this is the book I'd write.

Editorial Review:

This practical and comprehensive book introduces primary care physicians, residents, and students to behavioral medicine. It emphasizes practical clinical concerns and includes case examples. It addresses physician well-being.

Editorial Review:

Do you suffer from ongoing pain or chronic medical symptoms such as fatigue, lower back pain, arthritis, acid indigestion, insomnia, or migraines? Do they interfere with your family time or your work? Have you been forced to give up activities that you enjoy?

Thirty percent of the population suffers from illnesses that respond only partially to conventional medicine. But this doesn't mean that there is no relief in sight.

Dr. Arthur Barsky, a pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine, has found that changing the way you think about your illness can have a remarkable effect on how you experience your symptoms. At Harvard Medical School, he developed "Stop Being Your Symptoms and Start Being Yourself," a breakthrough six-week program that is scientifically tested, unique, and simple to learn. Through hundreds of exercises, worksheets, and patient examples, it teaches patients to master the five psychological factors that contribute to chronic symptoms.

You may not be able to completely eliminate your symptoms. But it is possible to control them rather than letting them control you. So stop being your symptoms—and start living the life you deserve.

Wonderful advice for Americans 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Since my wife and her family are Samoans, I've benefitted from their more natural, less technological cadence, a rhythm highly recommended by the author, who suggests that contemporary industrial man lives too much in the wordy, cerebral mind and too little in the emotional mid-brain that we share with other mammals. The book provides a wealth of practical exercises that help us tune out our constant analytical self-chatter and attune ourselves to simpler and emotionally wiser ways.
He also describes the many health benefits of religious faith, available to believers. But there's the rub for many, because the Judeo-Christian scriptures that so many find comfort in have been so deconstructed by textual analysis as to render them too little believable in too many ways for too many people of intelligence, education and rational ability. But the author doesn't denigrate religion, and is honest in admitting that while it works well for many it doesn't for many others. I gave the book four stars rather than five because the author doesn't adequately resolve the issue of credibility of traditional religions in a scientific age.

Editorial Review:

Why, at a time we’re better off materially and live longer than any generation in history, are depression and stress reaching epidemic rates? As Dr. Gregg Jacobs argues, emerging scientific research suggests our emotional well-being is suffering due to our overreliance on the Thinking Mind—the rational, verbal, self-conscious part of ourselves. In the course of history we have gradually become severed from a deeper, older part of our humanity. Dr. Jacobs offers a practical program for re-engaging with this indelible part of our being, explaining how to access life-enhancing positive emotions while minimizing negative ones; connect with a more intuitive intelligence and foster a deeper, expanded sense of daily awareness; and achieve a more integrated concept of self through a closer harmony of intellect and emotion.

Editorial Review:

One of every six couples in America is experiencing infertility, a devastating crisis that affects men and women individually and as a couple. This comforting and informative book addresses the medical, financial, and emotional issues that couples must work through while resolving their infertility. Written in a question-and-answer format, this sympathetic book offers practical advice on how to contend with the emotional ups and downs of infertility-from learning how to communicate feelings more effectively to coping with the losses of failed treatments or miscarriages. Warm and practical, the book is divided into twelve chapters, grouped according to the four stages involved in resolving infertility: crisis, acceptance, resolution and epilogue. Addressing the crisis phase are chapters on communicating effectively in a crisis, viewing infertility through the eyes of a parent, coping with family and friends, dealing with stresses at work while going through medical treatment, dealing with the medical establishment, and working through loss. For the stages of acceptance and resolution the authors offer chapters on deepening one's faith, knowing when to stop medical treatment, and practical advice for couples deciding to live child-free or considering adoption. An extensive section at the end addresses issues and concerns of professionals dealing with infertility patients. In addition, there are self-help exercises and a guide to resources. Originally titled What to Expect When You're Experiencing Infertility in hardcover.

Editorial Review:

A mere "symbol" of medicine--the sugar pill, saline injection, doctor in a white lab coat--the placebo nonetheless sometimes produces "real" results. Medical science has largely managed its discomfort with this phenomenon by discounting the placebo effect, subtracting it as an impurity in its data through double-blind tests of new treatments and drugs. This book is committed to a different perspective--namely, that the placebo effect is a "real" entity in its own right, one that has much to teach us about how symbols, settings, and human relationships literally get under our skin.

Anne Harrington's introduction and a historical overview by Elaine Shapiro and the late Arthur Shapiro, which open the book, review the place of placebos in the history of medicine, investigate the current surge in interest in them, and probe the methodological difficulties of saying scientifically just what placebos can and cannot do. Combining individual essays with a dialogue among writers from fields as far-flung as cultural anthropology and religion, pharmacology and molecular biology, the book aims to expand our ideas about what the placebo effect is and how it should be seen and studied. At the same time, the book uses the challenges and questions raised by placebo phenomena to initiate a broader interdisciplinary discussion about our nature as cultural animals: animals with minds, brains, and bodies that somehow manage to integrate "biology" and "culture," "mechanism" and "meaning," into a seamless whole.
