Editorial Review:

When mothers feel depressed in the months after childbirth, their feelings have often been dismissed as understandable reactions to the stress of caring for a new baby, perhaps complicated by family and marital demands. Most mothers cope, with varying degrees of support and success, but for many the neglect and misunderstanding of postnatal emotional problems can lead to long-term difficulties, with implications for their families as well as for mental health services. This book provides an understanding of depression following childbirth which draws together current theories and a synthesis of key research with a framework for intervention. It provides a novel way of thinking about postnatal depression, and a treatment program which is based on this model. The clinical programs and interventions which are outlined have been found to be effective at reducing postnatal depression. These programs are aimed at developing coping skills in women which:
* Reduce the symptoms of postnatal depression
* Improve maternal functioning in terms of self-esteem, assertiveness and coping
* Address marital and partner difficulties which often arise
* Deal with parent-infant difficulties the may exist
* Facilitate the use and development of existing social networks
The authors have reviewed current knowledge on postnatal depression, and given guidelines for best practice in a variety of approaches to treatment and prevention, Included is a detailed account of a tried-and-tested 10-week treatment program, together with materials and resources that a busy clinician might need to implement a similar program. Treating postnatal Depression will be a valuable resource for clinical psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, nurses, health visitors, midwives and other professionals who need to understand and deal with the emotional problems of mothers and babies. "A very readable book which presents an excellent overview of this important topic, and allows the authors to share their wealth of clinical experience in the clinical management of depressed mothers." Professor Peter Lewinsohn, University of Oregon "This book is a very timely and accessible approach for health care workers who treat women with postnatal depression Medical interventions alone are rarely adequate in the management of this disorder, an understanding of the psychological issues is essential, and this comprehensive manual, which deals with how to approach the complexities of the disorder, will aid workers significantly and, ultimately, benefit those who are suffering." Professor Anne Buist, University of Melbourne Austin & Repatriation Medical Centre

im not happy at all with this purchase- i need it for a class, and i paid extra money to have it expedited- not only was the seller rude and mostly unresponsive to my emails inquiring where the book was, but it took about two weeks to arrive when it was guaranteed to come in a couple of days. i would never buy from this seller again, and have doubts about purchasing from amazon at all in the future.

Editorial Review:

Known for its currency and its effective treatment of research studies (both historical and contemporary), this new edition provides a sound, pragmatic understanding of the behaviors that affect health. The Fourth Edition offers a more streamlined, straightforward presentation that makes the material more accessible to students. The authors explain experimental design and critique studies and their findings by examining how the studies were conducted. Where there is controversy or a finding that creates doubt or uncertainty, Brannon and Feist clarify. In this edition, the authors offer an increased emphasis on psychological interventions, practical self-assessments, unique coverage of violence prevention, and the latest research and statistics on health psychology.

Editorial Review:

Until this century, most medications prescribed by physicians were pharmacologically inert, if not harmful. That is, physicians were prescribing placebos or worse without knowing it. In a sense, then, the history of medical treatment until relatively recently is the history of the placebo effect. Based on the authors' lifelong study and clinical research, this is a comprehensive and scholarly examination of the placebo effect. The authors begin by surveying the use of placebos from antiquity to modern times. They also examine the development, use, and validity of the double-blind, controlled clinical trial. And they present their own study of the placebo effect in more than 1000 patients.

Demonstrating both the magnitude and the limitations of the placebo effect, the book helps to clarify knotty issues ranging from the evaluation of therapies to the ethics of conducting controlled studies in which patients are deliberately given placebos. With the renewed interest in the mind-body relationship as well as in the role of placebos in new and alternative medical procedures and therapies, the findings of this book are especially timely.

review for medical students and residents 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is a great neuroanatomy book. The best part of the book for medical students in their clinical rotations and residents - is the clinical notes section that includes clinical presentations and many radigraphic studies as well. I bought my first copy during my first neuroanat course in 1993. I am a neurology residdent now and still refer to it frquently.

Editorial Review:

This review book is an ideal study guide for medical, dental, and allied health students who are preparing for examinations and a quick refresher in clinical neuroanatomy for students during their clinical clerkships. Dr. Snell presents the complex subject of clinical neuroanatomy in a condensed, easy-to-digest form, with diagrams, radiographs, CT and MRI scans, a PET scan, and numerous tables. At the end of each chapter are National Board type questions, which are followed by answers and, where appropriate, brief explanations. Included are numerous questions based on a clinical problem that requires a neuroanatomical or neurophysiological answer. For a more extensive review, this book can be used in conjunction with the Fourth Edition of Dr. Snell's Clinical Neuroanatomy for Medical Students.

Editorial Review:

For decades, health care providers have worked as though there were a monolithic wall dividing the ailments of the mind from those of the body. Theorists on either side developed separate languages and philosophies to explain symptoms. This distinction has left many clinicians unable to treat successfully patients whose symptoms—such as headaches, conversion paralysis, and seizures—arise from the place where mind and body meet. In this book, the authors describe a powerful narrative therapy, one that relies on the wisdom and everyday language of patients’ real-life stories instead of the expert knowledge and professional language of the clinician. This approach can be used across all categories of somatic symptoms, from factitious ones to medical illnesses such as asthma or migraine headaches. The authors show how somatic symptoms are often related to unspeakable dilemmas, as in the case of a child who, after discovering a parent’s marital infidelity, is afraid to disclose the secret and begins having blackout spells for which a neurologist can find no physiological basis. These dilemmas can be understood only if a clinician creates the kind of relationship in which privately held stories of fear, shame, and threat can be told safely. Detailed case studies and numerous brief examples vividly illustrate techniques for helping patients escape the dilemmas that bind their bodies by finding new language and stories that can free them.In an innovative section, the authors rethink the current ideas and practices of psychopharmacology. Rather than “treating” a brain disease, a clinician uses medications to recalibrate brain systems that register alarm, thereby opening new possibilities for therapeutic change through speaking, listening, reflecting, and relating. This book offers all clinicians—psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, nurses, physicians, and family therapists—a way to use language to help patients resolve bodily symptoms. It avoids the stigmatization that patients and families so often experience—and the frustration clinicians feel—when struggling to find answers for mind-body problems.

An excellent book for patients and practitioners 5 out of 5 stars.

This book offers a comprehensive collection of practical strategies and case histories for anyone seeking to discover what behavioural medicine and psychoneuroimmunology can offer to a patient confronting a life threatening or 'quality of life' threatening condition. To the medical professional or therapist it is compelling and essential reading.

An indispensible guide to improving one's outlook on life. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book inspired me to attend the Getting Well program in Orlando founded and ran by the author, Dee Brigham, following major surgery. This book and the concepts therein summarize what is addressed during the program, and is an invaluable asset towards avoiding negative behavior and towards getting healthy again.

Editorial Review:

This volume functions as a road map to the territory that lies at the border between medicine and psychiatry. Dr Asaad lends clarity and balance to an area that does not fit neatly into the established diagnostic and treatment framework. The text is divided into three parts, investigating somatoform disorders, factitious disorders and malingering, and medical conditions affected by psychological factors. Information is presented in a consistent format for easy access, with each disorder broken down into manageable components - from definition and clinical presentation to course and prognosis. Throughout the work, case studies and examples are included. As a result of Dr Asaad's presentation, students as well as new and established mental health practitioners have an essential vehicle for integration into the general health care team.
