Editorial Review:

Medically unexplained illnesses are among the most common disorders in primary medical care today. Accordingly, there has been a recent surge of interest in the physiology of such illnesses as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and multiple chemical sensitivity. But biomedical models can only go so far toward understanding a group of painful and often frustrating symptoms. These models are unable to fully answer such questions as: How are these vulnerabilities aggravated by psychosocial stress factors such as childhood abuse, work, and interpersonal stress? What cognitive factors contribute to an increase in symptoms? And, perhaps more importantly, why do medically unexplained illnesses strike women in overwhelmingly disproportionate numbers?Author Susan K. Johnson surveys the most recent research on how psychological, social, and physiological factors may interact and contribute to the development of symptoms. This volume will appeal to both psychologists and health care professionals interested in more fully understanding the interaction between mind and body in medically unexplained illness.

Editorial Review:

Georg Groddeck (1866-1934), who was trained as a physician but became famous for his success as a healer, introduced a radical concept in that we virtually always cause our own illness and injury; therefore, we can cure and avoid both. He utilized the technique of psychoanalysis to communicate with the source of the illness. In The Interpretation of Illness, Homer goes beyond Groddeck's initial insight to emphasize that illness is a communication to others, especially a call for sympathy. No one consciously likes to be sick or hurt; but we all, consciously or unconsciously, tell others about our ills, expecting them to extend sympathy. Interpretation is a series of letters from Homer, writing under the persona "Augie," to a friend. Appropriately enough, this style is similar to the format used by Groddeck in The Book of the It.

Editorial Review:

In this unique, prize-winning study Danielle Quinodoz unravels the unconscious significance of the feelings of vertigo which arise in situations where there is no immediate physical danger of falling and no organic cause. She traces the origins of such emotional vertigo to inner anxiety which manifests itself in physical symptoms. The severity of these feelings of dizziness directly corresponds with the level of anxiety experienced by the sufferer.

Through a detailed case study of a patient who experienced vertigo during analysis, the author offers some thought-provoking insights into the object relationship and the importance of the role of the analyst in helping the patient translate sensation into representation.

Editorial Review:

The placebo elicits more passionate debate, scepticism and personal belief than almost any other aspect of medicine. As yet there are no concrete answers - but many challenging observations and powerful effects occur daily in healthcare which need to be examined. This book will stimulate and inform every reader - from the experienced practitioner to the new student - who has ever asked, "What is the placebo really, and why should it matter to me?" Written in an accessible and engaging style with contributions from leading figures in healthcare, it tackles issues of the placebo effect in complementary medicine.

Editorial Review:

These proceedings represent the most recent scientific results that demonstrate many of the direct effects of the soma-psyche interplay in all fields of medicine: pediatrics, psychiatry, internal medicine, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, cardiology.

Modern psychosomatic medicine has expanded rapidly and today it involves a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines. The ground-breaking conclusions of neuroscience, physics, molecular biology, genetics and medical technology have proven many of the hypotheses and notions put forward by representatives of psychosomatic medical community many years ago. The notion that all our feelings are experienced and psycho-neuro-endocrino-immunologically expressed in the body has been scientifically proven during the last decade. More so: all our physical functions have their psychological antecedent. Soma and psyche are two aspects of human life and there is a constant interplay between the two. This interplay is transmitted via biochemical signals which can thus be considered to be messengers between the different peripheral parts of the body and its central nervous system, the brain, which represents the superior and overall control unit. The environment in which man finds himself - psychosocial as well as physical - has a profound influence on his inner psychobiological reality. This inner reality in turn reflects the relationship between his psychic and physical processes. Furthermore, each individual influences his surroundings through actions that are preceded by his own thoughts and feelings.

  • Up to date research findings in the cross-scientific field of psychosomatic medicine

  • State of the at treatment methods

  • Wide array of subject matters discussed with psychosomatic medicine as a core component

Editorial Review:

Functional somatic syndromes are defined as physical syndromes without an organic disease explanation, demonstrable structural changes, or established biochemical abnormalities. This book reviews the state of scientific and clinical understanding of the nine most common functional somatic syndromes. For each syndrome, expert contributors provide a brief historical perspective, a current definition, a case presentation, confirmatory and contradictory research findings, a discussion of the leading pathogenetic hypotheses, and guidelines for diagnosis and treatment. Chapters offer advice for the determination of disability of patients with these medically unexplained disorders, while describing both medical and psychiatric interventions. Stressing the importance of a sound therapeutic relationship as a basis for treatment, this is an invaluable resource for professionals in primary care and many other disciplines.

Editorial Review:

Psychological stress is often overlooked by medical doctors as a major factor in physiologically based illness; however, clinical studies show that stress has a vital impact on both the mental and physical well-being of patients. Handbook of Stress Medicine: An Organ System Approach focuses on the relationship between stress and the physiology and pathology of the major organ systems of the body. It suggests that understanding how stress impacts on illnesses can help hold down medical costs through more accurate diagnoses and promote improved preventative care. Section I offers a general background on stress as it relates to medicine and the difficulties in conducting stress-related research. The primary focus of the text, how stress effects specific organ systems, is examined using scientific and clinical data in Section II. The third section addresses the impact of stress on important medical problems of current interest, such as AIDS, cancer, and substance abuse. It also discusses anxiety disorders. The next section covers topics related to stress, such as stress measurement, stress in the workplace, and the psychodynamics of stress. The final section explores the major pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to the treatment of stress and anxiety disorders. This book will assist physicians, psychologists, nurses, physical therapists, and other health care professionals recognize possible stress-related problems, educate their patients, and develop therapeutic strategies for reducing stress and stress-related illnesses.
