Nobody teaches this stuff. Read it! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Excellent. A bit dated but timeless content. The beginning and end speaks to AA type meetings but it's not the main focus of the book, co-dependency is, which just about everyone deals with growing up. Quick read. There are a few short stories featuring animals that are sprinkled between the chapters, adding levity and a moment to escape and explore how the new information may serve you. My favorite, The Goose, whose parents told her not to leave the pond despite her feeling sick but she finally did leave and discovered she was right. The family unit unknowingly puts family members into positions and then keeps them there unable to see the dysfunction. Once one family member took action leaving the others behind the others eventually followed. If one family member is acting out and you don't know why it is not always the issue of the one who is acting out, look beyond, look to yourself first. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

It is estimated that as many as 34 million people grew up in alcoholic homes. But what about the rest of us? What about families that had no alcoholism, but did have perfectionism, workaholism, compulsive overeating, intimacy problems, depression, problems in expressing feelings, plus all the other personality traits that can produce a family system much like an alcoholic one?

Countless millions of us struggle with these kinds of dysfunctions every day, and until very recently we struggled alone. Pulling together both theory and clinical practice, John and Linda Friel provide a readable explanation of what happened to us and how we can rectify it.

Great HOW TO's for working with families 5 out of 5 stars.
48 of 48 people found this review helpful.

Minuchin is a master not only of the art of Family Therapy, but of informative prose as well. Very specific techniques for responding to a range of family dynamics are presented along with relevant theory and poignant vignettes. Though developed in the 1970's, Minuchin's vision for sparking change by "joining" and then working from within families remains powerful and relevant. The techniques in this well written manual resemble those of the modern Narrative Therapy movement, but are presented in a fashion both accessable to the Family Therapy novice and usefull to the seasoned professional.

Editorial Review:

A master of family therapy, Salvador Minuchin, traces for the first time the minute operations of day-to-day practice. Dr. Minuchin has achieved renown for his theoretical breakthroughs and his success at treatment. Now he explains in close detail those precise and difficult maneuvers that constitute his art. The book thus codifies the method of one of the country's most successful practitioners.

Book review 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Essential Skills in Family Therapy is a guide of the process of therapy to be used by those learning how to do therapy. The book is also a good refresher for practicing therapists. Chapters cover topics from the beginning of therapy through termination and include special issues like working with children and adolescents.
Getting started
The developmental stages of new therapists are learning the essential skills, learning to conceptualize cases, and dealing with the therapist as self.
Before the initial interview
In the initial contact, therapists should listen and reflect what they hear and assess for crisis. This initial contact contains only basic relevant information and is not the time for interventions, advice, or suggestions. Therapists must know whether they have the knowledge and expertise to treat a problem or if they need to refer the client to someone else. The "business" of therapy, such as policies regarding making and canceling appointments and payment, should be discussed as quickly and efficiently as possible. When beginning therapy, it is helpful to know who made the initial contact and why, although the therapist should build rapport with all involved. A sample intake form is included, and the authors also discuss which family members should be involved in therapy.
Initial interview
The first task of the therapist is to join with the client. The credibility of therapy and/or the therapist may need to be discussed. Goals should be defined, and the therapist should begin to build motivation for change. Administrative issues like confidentiality, videotaping, observation, etc. should also be discussed.
Guidelines for conducting the assessment
The initial assessment is the time to explore the presenting problems, attempted solutions, and crisis and stressful life events. The therapist must constantly be aware of possible issues of harm to either self or others. Suicide, violence, abuse, substance abuse, biological factors, meaning systems, spirituality, family system, and social systems are all considered.
Developing treatment focus
The therapist must select the problem list, examine the history and treatment of problems, select a treatment modality, and determine the length and frequency of treatment. The treatment modality selected will be influenced by the therapist's orientation and experience, research, the financial constraints of the client, and the client's willingness and availability to follow the suggested treatment. Referrals may be considered. The therapist may wish to consult with the client's physician or request psychological testing.
Basic treatment skills
Therapy includes asking questions, normalizing, reframing, providing support, confronting, and pacing the therapy to meet the needs of the client. Handouts may be given to clients. In developing their expertise, beginning therapist should establish their understanding of the theoretical foundation of treatment skills; consider process and content, timing, and clients' anxiety levels; and create a family treatment plan.
Children and adolescents
Parents or primary caretakers should be involved in therapy and as cotherapists during the remainder of the week. In working with adolescents, the family need for maintaining structure must be balanced with the transformational needs of launching the adolescent.
Couples
Each spouse should get his/her turn to talk so that the therapist can understand the needs of both. This chapter deals with some of the common problems that couples present.
Mental illness of family member
Depression, anxiety, and alcoholism and drug abuse are discussed. When a family member is involved with drug or alcohol abuse, the first goal of therapy is to stop the abuse and then the reasons for the abuse can be examined.
Getting Unstuck
Resistance is a normal part of therapy. The familiar is comfortable. Therapy often involves both first and second order change. First order change is behavioral with the goal of acting in a new way. Second order change deals with behavioral, cognitive, affective, and relational realms and seeks to change the entire system. In dealing with cancellations and no shows, therapists need to review goals with the client and possible terminate or go to more infrequent appointments to address other goals.
Termination
Termination can be client initiated, therapist initiated, or mutual. Having clearly defined goals will tell therapists and clients when it is time to terminate therapy. Temporary relapses can be predicted by explaining that we often take two steps forward and one back.
Future effects of managed care
Managed care makes it more important for family therapists to maintain a relationship with family physicians. To meet managed care expectations, therapist need to articulate the problem, possible treatments, the chosen treatment, and expected outcomes.
This is an excellent resource for beginning therapists or those considering studying to become therapists. Therapists should be able to clarify their strengths and limits immediately, and this book can help them do that. The tables on such things as violence and abuse are helpful guides. Meaning systems are defined as cognitions, beliefs, memories, and emotions, which are often a part of culture and have implications for those of us who work cross-culturally. I appreciate the emphasis that the authors placed on developing the relationship between the therapist and the client. Therapists must know their role as they have full responsibility for therapy and for the relationship. As divorce has become so prevalent in the U.S., it is important for us to know that only about half of divorced couples develop cooperative coparenting. Couples need five positive interactions for every negative interaction. Families put energy and resources into being stuck, which is sometimes helpful to point out to them in the course of therapy. I appreciate the explanation of the goals of terminating, which are helping clients consolidate gains made in therapy, empowering clients, and being sensitive to loss issues, as I have not always thought through these goals when terminating therapy.

Editorial Review:

Designed throughout to meet the developmental needs of the beginning family therapist, this handbook provides readers with the basic skills and tools necessary to become empathic, confident, and successful practitioners in today's rapidly changing field of family therapy. From initial client intake to the nuts-and-bolts of the interview, assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, treatment planning, intervention techniques, troubleshooting, and termination, the book translates current research findings into cogent recommendations for practice. Numerous case examples and sample treatment plans, forms, and questionnaires complement the text.

bought this for a family therapy class. it's a good reference book, with information on all types of family therapy.

Basic Counseling Textbook 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a textbook for a graduate class in psychology. If you need to buy it as a textbook, then of course, you must buy it. The chapters are arranged in an order that explains the history of family therapy and the basics. It is a general textbook. You will need other books to get into psychotherapy in a deeper way. However, as an introductory text, this is easy reading. It is called an "overview" because that is exactly what it is.
My greatest advice for you is to not forget to use the website as a help to the book. The website backup materials will guarantee you to have a great grade in the course.

Introduction to natural sytems 5 out of 5 stars.
98 of 100 people found this review helpful.

A rich introduction to Murray Bowen's natural systems theory. Explains relevance of the theory to clinical work with families, couples, and individuals. Also, briefly explores and contrasts the relationship of Bowen theory to sociobiology, evolutionary neurology, and analytic theory. Case illustrations are clear and helpful. Would recommend to social workers, psychologist, biologists, and those interested in a natural systems approach to human behavior. Although strong on evaluation and descriptions concerning emotional processes in human families and groups, there is less attention to therapy techiques. More of a book about thinking on relationships, than one of the clinical "how to" kind of presentations that have become standard fare in the family therapy field. I have read through Dr. Kerr's text several times and have studied its chapters separately. Each reread reveals additional applications and insights into the theory. Surely, a book that can grow with you! Dr. Bowen's epilogue is an added jem in which he offers perhaps his last written description of the development of the theory and his belief in the relevance of theory to the future. Personally, the book has influenced both my private and professional life.

Editorial Review:

"Comprehensively presents Bowen's principles for assessing families, enabling the family therapist to organize clinical data and make therapy decisions".--James L. Framo, Ph.D.

Finally a book for the other person in the relationship 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 36 people found this review helpful.

It hasn't been until recently that pornography has been accepted as a real addiction. Pornography addiction in some ways is much more shameful than alcohol and drug addition, and reliable resources for this type of addiction are still limited. This is the first book that I have read that really places the emphasis on the partner who is impacted by their spouse's behavior.

This book covers very well the feelings that you may have when you find your spouse is addicted to pornography. I like that the book also tells you different ways to confront your partner, and what to expect when you do confront your partner. This book also emphasizes what you must do as the partner that realizes they are in a relationship with a person with an addiction. Reid and Gray spend time in walking you through how you will feel, and offers you suggestions in how you can work through your own feelings.

Reid and Gray then spend time in helping you and your spouse to determine if a treatment plan is going to be used. Unlike Carnes' Out of the Shadows this book takes the perspective of the partner who is hurt by the addiction. The book also suggests ways to work on treating this addiction, determining if the relationship can be saved, and then working through the outcome of the relationship.

While there are a few books available on pornography addiction, this one really excells at what the partner suffers through. This book is well worth reading if you are involved with someone with a sexual addiction and how it will impact you. This book read along with Carnes Out of the Shadows will give a very well rounded perspective on the relationship from the addict and the person impacted by this behavior. Pornography addiction does not have to mean the end of a relationship, but it does mean looking at the relationship with fresh eyes. Reid and Gray will assist people in this type of circumstance with healing, and growing from this experience.

Editorial Review:

Addressing the modern issue of addiction to Internet pornography, this evaluation guides spouses struggling to find ways to confront this problem in their married lives. Calling on years of counseling experience and clinical study, the authors cover the most concerning issues of this addiction, from understanding the importance of disclosure to reestablishing trust for the success of a long-term marriage. Containing valuable information gathered from experience, research, and the testimonies of clients struggling to overcome these issues, this guide helps couples confront and overcome the hurdles of related activities such as illicit chat rooms, cybersex, and predatory behavior towards minors.

Human wisdom 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This is a marvelous book that addresses fundamental issues in our contemporary Western society with great, heart-felt insight.
The author discusses his theory and practice of the phenomenology of intimate relationships, which has the power to uncover the hidden dynamics of family relations, in order to heal individual people and their entire family system.

The author explains in great detail how any loss of balance - in our sense of belonging, give-and-take, and need for structure - within family systems necessarily causes feelings of guilt in both the family conscience and individual consciences of its members. Loss of balance in one part of the system invariably causes compensation in other, weaker parts, most often children - who will be adults later in their lives.
If the, mostly subconscious, causes of these compensations are not properly recognized and addressed, then therapy is bound to fail. If however we start from fundamental insight in the system dynamics well explained in this marvelous book, then we will be empowered to take the right course of action.

All sorts of causes are phenomenologically explained in this book, in order to provide fundamental insight in their "karmic" structures of cause-result: divorce, child adoption, sexual abuse, suicide, homocide, criminal behavior, abortion, unfaithfulness in marriage, a scape-goat within a family, different sexual needs within an intimate relationship, tragic loss, re-marriage after divorce, a child mothering or fathering a parent, homosexuality, jealousy, refusal to accept a parent, legal custody, illegal children, neglecting a partner in favour of children, and so on.

The author offers fundamental insight in these matters, as well as sound strategies to address them decisively. There is a sense of "natural magic" in his therapeutics, when Bert Helling has a client re-enact (and correct) their family constellation. One can easily understand that Hellinger must have learnt much of this from his work as a former Catholic priest among the Zulus of South-Africa, where a kind of "innate wisdom" must have been awoken in him - The short biography in the appendix anyway explains a lot about the developing "spirit" of Hellinger during his life.

In conclusion: This book may teach us to gain our rightful place within our family system, one that is our birth-right; gain freedom from "systemic guilt", and live in peace within our family.

What I like about this book is its redeeming spirit and its knowing heart, which anyone can understand. It is deeply human and I like it tremendously. If any book can change your life by gaining fundamental insight in family dynamics, then this is the one. I wish I could rate it with 6 stars.
