Editorial Review:

The most comprehensive guide to the botany, history, distribution, and cultivation of all known psychoactive plants

• Examines 414 psychoactive plants and related substances

• Explores how using psychoactive plants in a culturally sanctioned context can produce important insights into the nature of reality

• Contains 797 color photographs and 645 black-and-white illustrations

In the traditions of every culture, plants have been highly valued for their nourishing, healing, and transformative properties. The most powerful plants--those known to transport the human mind into other dimensions of consciousness--have traditionally been regarded as sacred. In The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants Christian Rätsch details the botany, history, distribution, cultivation, and preparation and dosage of more than 400 psychoactive plants. He discusses their ritual and medicinal usage, cultural artifacts made from these plants, and works of art that either represent or have been inspired by them. The author begins with 168 of the most well-known psychoactives--such as cannabis, datura, and papaver--then presents 133 lesser known substances as well as additional plants known as “legal highs,” plants known only from mythological contexts and literature, and plant products that include substances such as ayahuasca, incense, and soma. The text is lavishly illustrated with 797 color photographs--many of which are from the author’s extensive fieldwork around the world--showing the people, ceremonies, and art related to the ritual use of the world’s sacred psychoactives.

Nobody edited this book 1 out of 5 stars.

There are so many mistakes in this book, average 1 per page in the math formulas, in the answer pages. Things don't match up. Did anyone bother editing this book? I can't believe thenumber of mistakes.

Fast service and Great quality!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I needed this book for a class that I was taking over the fall semester. It was in perfect condition, and it was shipped very quickly (which was good because I ordered it after the class started). Thank you!

Good product 4 out of 5 stars.

Great serive from seller! Seller was honest and book was in good condition! It did however have more highlights in the book than I thought it would! Overall good experience and I would by from this seller again!

Not all that great. Too broad. 2 out of 5 stars.

First of all, I can't believe how stupid my fellow peers are. This is NOT the place to comment about your seller. Can't you read? Some of you are going to be future pharmacists? Hope you aren't practicing in my state.

That being said, I was disappointed in the book. I felt that my professor covered subjects more adequately than this book did. It was simplified and, like another reviewer mentioned, all over the place. My professor did admit that it wasn't the best book out there for biopharmaceutics, but it was decent. It's simplified, so it will probably help you get started with your studies. You do want supplemental reading though if your professor isn't that great. (Thankfully mine was.)

Editorial Review:

The primary emphasis of this book is on the application and understanding of concepts. Basic theoretical discussions of the principles of biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics are provided, along with illustrative examples and practice problems and solutions to help the student gain skill in practical problem solving.

Editorial Review:

Almost all of us have used medical drugs at some point to help make us well, or at least to help us feel better while we endure our illnesses. Yet most of them are mysterious to us, even those that are thoroughly understood by scientists. Susan Aldridge wrote Magic Molecules: How Drugs Work as a guide for scientifically literate consumers to help us understand these chemicals and their effects on our bodies. Looking at painkillers, antibiotics, cancer therapies, "smart drugs," and many others, she uses clear, plain language and illustrations to describe the mechanisms of these medications.

But Magic Molecules is no encyclopedia. Aldridge includes fascinating discussions of related topics such as viral diseases, clinical trials, and the history of drug use, interwoven with her descriptions of the drugs we use each day. How does ibuprofen differ from aspirin? Why does chemotherapy make us sick? How come pregnant women have to be so careful with their medications? These questions and more are answered in this book that combines the usefulness of a reference text with the delightful charm of the best scientific works. --Rob Lightner

Avoid toxemia 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Learn how to avoid toxemia (pre-eclampsia) in pregnancy. The main point is to eat salt and eat enough protein. The author's doctor husband did research for decades and cured toxemia by simply supplying the salt shaker and adding meat to the diet. Read the details. Get some recipes at the end of the book. Read example stories.

Read This One 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was pregnant with my first child (25 years ago!) I read a gazillion books about all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. This book would be at the top of the list. The information about diet and nutrition for pregnant women (particularly in the prevention of toxemia) was easy to understand and backed by solid research/clinical observations. Assuming this edition is similar to the one I read, it also included a thorough list of the nutritional content of common foods.

Highly recommended!

A cutting-edge collection of updated and core techniques for the neurological study of drugs of abuse. Described in step-by-step detail by hands-on experts, these readily reproducible protocols cover a wide variety of coherent methods for gathering information on quantitative changes in protein and mRNA at both tissue and cellular levels. There are various methods for detecting single and multiple alterations in single and multiple gene expression, for analyzing the functional roles of genes and proteins, for studying the release kinetics of striatal dopamine, and for the quantitative measurement of such neurotransmitters as acetylcholine. Insightful review articles address key current topics on the effect of drugs of abuse on the brain.

Applied Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book is fantastic! It is the fourth edition of the popular textbook on biopharmaceutics. The authors have maintained the excellent standards of previous editions, by clearly explaining the concepts while keeping mathematical derivations to a minimum. The "practical focus" sections show the application of pharmacokinetics in a clinical setting. A new chapter on targeted drug delivery and newer biotech drugs is very timely and relevant. Overall, this is an excellent book on biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics. It is recommended not only for the newcomer, but serves as a valuable reference in any library.

Not helpful 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I used this book as a help while studying for a pharmacokinetics course in pharmacy school. I found it to be of little use for this purpose.

Reading one chapter to learn a concept was not helpful as there was little focus on important details, just a lot of little picky information that really wasn't necessary. And looking up one particular piece of information was even difficult as vague examples and rambling sentences made reading the entire chapter a must.

As a review tool, the problems at the ends of the chapters were not helpful, either. The problems went from too easy to fantastically difficult with no in between.

As a student this wasn't a helpful reference or study tool.

Editorial Review:

This new edition emphasizes the application and understanding of basic theoretical principles of biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics. Now with a second highlight color, this book helps students gain skills in problem solving and includes examples and practice problems and solutions.

entheogenic lite 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

an entertaining and informed primer that achieves a lot with a friendly manner and a concise approach. Features some interesting sidelines on the various personalities involved through the years and contains some fascinating images and photos.

Most who will be attracted to this book (government officials notwithstanding) will already have a lot of this information in their libraries; Stafford does, however, deliver an amusing and informative overview that can be taken in a manageable but worthwhile dose.

I enjoyed it!

Editorial Review:

In Psychedelics, Peter Stafford offers a framework for understanding the enormous amount of information available on psychoactive substances. In addition to the photographs, illustrations, charts, and tables, he writes about the origins, varieties, physical and mental effects, societal benefits, complications, and drawbacks of psychedelics, particularly LSD, the most potent and representative of this class of drugs. Stafford also summarizes the promising studies that were halted in the 1960s, along with developments since that time, and offers a fascinating exploration of these drugs.
