Editorial Review:

Bob Hunter's Chic is the untold story of the unassuming schoolboy who laid the groundwork for Ohio stadium, as well as the story of the building of America's greatest athletic institution, the OSU program.

It's a near cinematic tale of how it all began, how mighty Michigan was first put in its place by the Buckeye upstarts. It is a story of the game itself creating its first modern identity, and into it all is woven the story of a boy whose prowess matched the vibrant passage of a city and a university reaching for their own potential.

Finally, it is a love story. In all its odd and mysterious turnings, neither the city nor the university ever forgot the schoolboy. Almost half a century afterward, Chic Harley returned to Columbus and a third of the city lined the downtown streets in the rain to cheer him.

Chic Harley is the ghost in the program, a tragic figure who through the life of Ohio Stadium gave as much sustained pleasure to as many people as any athlete of all time.

A book all LSU fans should have in their collection! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book while not on anyone time frame of LSU football, is a general history of the team though the years.

It has some nice reproductions of early programs, tickets, photos etc.

For others not LSU fans, I would rate the book a 2 range due to its being more of a show and tell type book.

Editorial Review:

He guided LSU to its first football championship in forty-five years. He turned down countless offers from professional teams to stay with the job he loves. Now Nick Saban reveals the secrets that will help you lead and succeed at work and in life.

Excellence doesn’t happen overnight. It comes from hard work, consistency, the drive to be the best, and a passion for what you do. Few understand this better than Nick Saban, the hottest college football coach in the game. Now, in How Good Do You Want to Be?, Saban shares his winning philosophy for creating and inspiring success.

In more than three decades as a player and coach, Saban has learned much about life and leadership, both on the field and off. Working alongside some of the game’s legends, including Super Bowl winner Bill Belichick and coaching legend Jerry Glanville, he saw firsthand how great leaders encourage greatness in others. In this candid, insightful guide, he shares such acquired wisdom as

Organization, Organization, Organization
Create an environment where everybody knows his or her responsibilities–and each is responsible to the entire group.
Motivate to Dominate
Understand the psychology of teams and individuals, and use that knowledge to breed success.
No Other Way than Right
Practice ethics and values–and demand the same from your team.
Look in the Mirror
Maintain an understanding of who you are by knowing your strengths and your weaknesses.

How Good Do You Want to Be? is more than the story of how Nick Saban motivates his staff and players to excel–it is also the memoir of one of America’s most successful coaches. Filled with instructive anecdotes and illuminated by never-before-told stories of his life and career, this is a book that challenges and inspires us all to be our best.

Editorial Review:

One of only two remaining charter members of the National Football League, the Chicago Bears are a team steeped in history. With nine pro football championships and twenty-six hall of famers, the Bears are also among the most successful franchises in all of professional sports.

This history comes to colorful life in Chicago Bears: The Complete Illustrated History. From the team’s 1919 origins as the Decatur Staleys to their appearance in Super Bowl XLI, this lavishly illustrated book covers the highs and lows from nearly nine decades of Bears football. Here is the story of the first dynasty under George “Papa Bear” Halas; the “Monsters of the Midway” of the 1940s; the team’s resurgence in the late 1960s; its 1985 Super Bowl win; and the run for the title in 2006. Chicago Tribune sportswriter and longtime Bears aficionado Lew Freedmen highlights the legends who have donned Bears uniforms, outsize characters like Red Grange, Bronko Nagurski, Sid Luckman, Mike Ditka, Dick Butkus, Gayle Sayers, Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, and many more. He includes the numbers behind the stories---the stats and team records---as well as pivotal plays in Bears’ history, from Halas’ T-formation to William “The Refrigerator” Perry’s touchdown runs. The result is a key chapter of sports history and a fitting tribute to one of football’s most beloved teams.

An excellent book for little football fans 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Both of our sons love sports. And both have loved this book. It's simple, easy to understand and easy to enjoy. I, and my boys, like it because the stars are the animals, and the little boys that play football. The pictures are simple and descriptive enough to convey the message and the story moves along quickly enough to keep short attention spans occupied. We've read Kick pass and Run hundreds of times in the last 4 years, and now that we own a copy of it ourselves, we'll probably read it twice as often.

Great easy to read football book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I came across an old copy of this book at a thrift shop. After reading this book to my 4 year old son it became a favorite of his.

A strange object falls into the middle of the woods where a group of animals inspect it and wonder what it is. Soon a boy comes to get it and takes it back to the football feild. The animals follow and watch from a distance as the boys play football. Then the animals have an a brilliant idea to play their own game of football. What will they use for a the ball?

This is a great book for 2 to 6 year olds and any child learning to read.

Editorial Review:

A group of animal friends play a game of football and learn the basics of the sport in this funny, engaging beginning reader. Full color.

Super Book 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoyed this book quite a bit. My boy finished football season a while ago and I decided to get more involved for this upcoming season by coaching. The details and strageties were solid and very applicable. For someone like me that had an athletic backgroud but no coaching experience, I found the information quite useful.

I would call this a "cookbook" for new coaches. Something anyone can follow.

I would recommend this.

If you love football... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I am looking in to coaching for fun and this is a great book to have. There is a lot of coaching information and great football information in general.

Excellent Read for the Beginning or Experienced Coach 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Football Coaching Bible brings together a collection of articles and speeches by successful coaches from all levels. Whether you are looking for guidance on how to teach leadership, how to build (or re-build) a program from the ground up, or some talk on X's and O's, this book has it covered. Bill Snyder's chapter is particularly great, and has helped me to apply focus to my life in areas other than coaching. His story at K State is amazing.

This book does help a bit with basic nomenclature for brand new coaches. However it mostly assumes a basic understanding of certain things. The beginning coach may have to do some digging to find out exactly what some of the terms mean.

Editorial Review:

Contributions from 29 American football coaches cover every facet of coaching. Each chapter contains strategies and stories expressed in the coach's own style.

Don't Believe Pretentious Twits 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic book, and what's more, it has served as a model and inspiration for the many (many, many) football hooligan books that followed.

I won't really comment on the absolute cliched tripe served up by one reviewer who gave this book one star, but I would point out that he might want to take some time out from an all-knowing banality spouting, error decrying, schedule, and consult a calendar.

Among The Thugs - 1993. Most of the others? 1999 and later, including the 2005(!) Gardner tome. This book, almost alone, spawned a veritable minor industry of Football Hooligan memoirs and reportage. Don't believe me? Head over to amazon.co.uk and check it out all the related items with this book over there.

By the way, I think it was sort of the point of the experiment that an editor of a (very popular in the right circles) literary magazine like Granta went and did what he did, and reported what he saw. And in the Granta tradition, he expounds a bit on What It All Means. That gets a little dull at times, but by no means lessens the overall interest of the book.

Among the Thugs is not meant to be a piece of documentary journalism, oral history, or a PhD thesis. It's a subjective and personal account, and the author makes no bones about that. The author did, objectively, get beaten to a pulp by Italian cops, so there's some credibility right there.

Editorial Review:

They have names like Barmy Bernie, Daft Donald, and Steamin' Sammy. They like lager (in huge quantities), the Queen, football clubs (especially Manchester United), and themselves. Their dislike encompasses the rest of the known universe, and England's soccer thugs express it in ways that range from mere vandalism to riots that terrorize entire cities. Now Bill Buford, editor of the prestigious journal Granta, enters this alternate society and records both its savageries and its sinister allure with the social imagination of a George Orwell and the raw personal engagement of a Hunter Thompson.

Editorial Review:

Jamie Carragher is one of the most charismatic footballers of his generation. Adored by the fans, he was recently voted the most popular player in the entire Liverpool squad. Yet the young Carra came to Liverpool as an Everton fan, from an Everton family, and with Everton friends. Packed with great anecdotes, controversial opinions and large helpings of his trademark humor, this is his story. Born in January 1978 in Bootle, Merseyside, Carragher signed professional terms with Liverpool in 1996, having served a successful apprenticeship, won the FA Youth Cup and played for England Under-21s. He scored a goal in his first full game for the senior team—pretty good for a defender and very unusual for him—and his versatility was to ensure a permanent place in the starting line up before long and he is now vice Captain. In fact he is so integral to the Liverpool squad, the Kop now chants "we all dream of a team of Carraghers" to the tune of "Yellow Submarine." Raw, funny, and down-to-earth, his book is an antidote to the anodyne sports autobiography. It takes you behind the scenes of all of Liverpool and England's greatest triumphs and disasters in the company of a player who never fails to be intelligent, controversial, or just downright hilarious.
