Editorial Review:

From the sun-scorched sands of the Kalahari to the snake-infested jungles of the Amazon, Les Stroud has made a life of surviving in the harshest—and most remote—regions on Earth.

Now, the creator, producer, and host of the hit television program Survivorman transfers his decades of knowledge and experience to the pages of Survive!, a practical guide that gives everyday readers a no-nonsense look at the real world of survival.

Stroud offers readers the essential skills and tactics necessary to endure in any corner of the globe, along with a wealth of insider information born of his own experiences in the outdoors and unavailable in any other book. Readers will learn:

  • How to make a survival shelter and why a lean-to is largely a waste of time.
  • Why survival kits are important, and why you should make your own.
  • Where to find water and why drinking contaminated water is sometimes warranted.
  • How to locate and trap small animals and why the notion of tracking and hunting large game is largely a pipe dream.

Whether seasoned in the outdoor arts or new to adventuring, all readers will learn something from Survive!. Stroud's many colorful anecdotes and cut-to-the-chase philosophy not only make for an entertaining read, but also enhance anyone's ability to focus on the main goal when everything else has gone wrong—survival.

Good as a pocket survival guide. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is great. It tells you basic needs for survival like how to find water, make shelter and purify water. It is just a great book. If you frequently travel to different places like jungles or forests and you want to know how to survive in the wild if you get lost, this is a good book to get.

Compact, comprehensive, interesting and useful. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bring this with me every time I go camping. It is very compact, fairly light, and packed with tons of useful info. Much of the info is practical knowledge even if you're not in a survival situation. It is written clearly and well illustrated, and is fun to read. The book is also water resistant and very durable. I have noticed a lot of typos in the book, but I still consider it the best survival book I have seen, and I highly reccomend it. I also have the larger version, which is a little easier to read and contains a bit more info, but the smaller one is very comprehensive and has almost as much information.

Editorial Review:

This is the definitive guide for all campers, hikers, and outdoor adventurers, including:

  • First aid and wilderness medicine
  • Building shelter and making fire
  • Hunting and trapping
  • Pocket survival kit
  • Disaster preparedness

I have always been interested about the aspects of survival. I found a website called . I really liked the website, and it turns out that the site was based on this book. So I purchased the book and am looking forward to reading it!

IMPORTANT - MAYBE 5 out of 5 stars.

Get this as a free download (Input on Google: "FM 21-76") and save this PDF File on a memory chip. It is what it purports to be. It could save your life and the lives of everyone in your family - even your neighbors. If it turns out that you don't have a need for it, then it cost you nothing.

Disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.

The item arrived in good condition and quickly but it was not as described as far as the information it provides it left a lot to be desired.

I live right on an earthquake fault and thought it was about time I get prepared. This book isn't glamorous but gives alot of information.

Editorial Review:

The US Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76 is a good basic guide, standard reading for our troops, and unlike some survival manuals, it is fairly well written and organized.

Great overview! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Overall, I think this is a great book. The authors are experienced and let you know if what they are saying is something they read as opposed to something they are claiming to know or have experienced by combining information from everyone (including themselves) or every book they have read. They also point out when and in what types of situations you need to be extra careful. There are important things to be reminded of when practicing these skill and we can sometimes forget we are all still subject to nature. For example, exploding rocks and food poisoning as well as foraging for plants and being certain of what you are eating. The style of writing is maybe awkward for some and I found it easier to pull pertinent information by hi-liting or underlining useful stuff. This also helps for easier reference later. I will point out one error but it is a common misconception. On pages 222-223 the author states "In fact, the water will boil hotter at higher elevations and so cook faster. I know one fellow who does all of his boiling with hot rocks (in a dutch oven) while in the mountains just because it does cook faster." In fact, the laws of physics would not allow the claimed scenario above...I'll explain so no one goes off thinking this is the case. Water being heated at higher elevations comes to a boil faster because IT BOILS AT A LOWER temperature. Therefore, FOOD COOKS SLOWER at higher elevations and I think one reason people invented the pressure cooker (more pressure = higher boiling point = food cooks faster). The reason water boils at a lower temperature at a higher elevation is because the atmospheric pressure is lower (the atmosphere thins out as you go up). The boiling temparature of substances are pressure dependent and when there is less pressure the molecules (or atoms) need less energy to escape from a liquid to become a gas. Hope that clarifies this for everyone who wasn't sure. Otherwise, some pictures may be disappointing but for the time period this book was compiled from I think it is pretty good. Inspiring and well worth the read but stop reading about it and go do it! (I'm guilty too :)

Editorial Review:

Simply put, this is the best book in existence that has compiled under one cover all the skills that one would need to not only survive in the wilderness, but to live comfortably. Unlike many other complete! skills books, this one was written one chapter at a time as smaller books (ten) complete in themselves. They were written to teach the reader how-to ... and they do. If you read a chapter, you come away with not only an understanding of how-to do it, you will also understand the whys. Over 700 photographs, and some line drawings, illustrate step by step every skill presented.

a fabulous base for exploring... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

my father gave me his copy of this book when i was in college. he was a camp director in his youth and while times were different then (they taught kids how to 'live off the land' by catching their own dinner) i am still able to share many of this books teaching with my own campers in today's much reserved society.
angier has found a balance of the science of each topic mixed with easy to use tips or diagrams (although limited in the old copy that i have) so he connects with people who learn in different ways.
this book gets you excited about exploring the wilderness and trying new things rather than leaning on one style. i will be passing this book onto my nephews or niece when they're ready, too! it crosses curious generations that easily...

Decent 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a decent book which encourages experimentation with dehydrating your food and creating recipes- something often left out of both dehydrating and backpacking food books. However, for what everything it does have or encourage, it lacks detail and I felt like there could have been so much more. As it is, it is worth the purchase in conjuction with at least one more, far substantial book.

Editorial Review:

" . . . a book that will appeal to everyone who has ever choked down the pre-packaged, bargain-basement camp food (or gone bankrupt buying the good stuff)." --Canoe & Kayak

. . . if you're on the lookout for a way to bring real meals to the field, [this book] might have the answer." --Field & Stream

Life in the outdoors revolves around food--cooking it, eating it, packing it, carrying it. We even fantasize about it, especially after a week of eating store-bought provisions. This book is all about fulfulling those food fantasies and avoiding those expensive disappointments. Trail Food tells you how to remove water from food, to make it lighter and longer-lasting, without removing its taste. Learn to plan menus and prepare meals just like the ones you left behind, using fresh foods from your garden or market, prepared and seasoned the way you like them.

Why fantasize when you can have the real thing?

Don't Leave Home Without It 5 out of 5 stars.
86 of 86 people found this review helpful.

This book was written by Rick Curtis, director of the Outdoor Action Program at Princeton University, one of the most succesful college outdoor programs around. It's not the kind of book you sit down and read, rather it's a good reference to keep handy when you have questions about things. Here's a bit of what it covers:

-backpacking equipment
-cooking and nutrition
-hygiene and water purification
-"leave-no-trace" hiking and camping
-weather
-safety and emergency procedures
-first aid
-trip planning

Every backpacker knows that space is limited and you can only carry the essentials- which definitely includes this book. In 10 chapters, a mid-size font, and 440 pages, it covers it all and will be the only backpacking guide you'll ever need. Hikers suffering with plantar fasciitis might also be interested in The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution.

Great book, but riddled with typos 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for anyone looking to get into backpacking or as a reference is the field for the seasoned trekker. The book contains plenty of up to date information covering almost everything you would need to know. The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is just stacked full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. A couple even in sections giving you numeric statistics and info. Apart from that... awesome book!

Excellent book on camping in Mexico. We have used their Baja Camping book twice to camp in the Baja and they give excellent advice and great reviews of the campgrounds.

Editorial Review:

This new edition gives RV travelers and campers all the information they need to hit the road for Mexico. Chapters are broken up into geographical sections for easy reference, and there is new information on RV travel in Baja and Belize. Routes that bisect or bypass cities are included, to accommodate both visitors who wish to see the hustle and bustle and those who would prefer to get away from it all. Directions, addresses, and maps for virtually every campground in Mexico are provided and make use of GPS coordinates to pinpoint destinations. There are also descriptions of campground facilities and a brief guide to the towns or localities where the campgrounds are located, listing important sights and destinations, local markets, and interesting side trips. Knowledgeably written and accessibly presented, this is the book to take across the border.

I got this for my 16 year old son. We recently moved from town to a very rural area, and he's been complaining there's nothing to do...so I got him this book and a tool kit. There's a lot of neat stuff to build, and useful survival information. I recommend this for older boys, and "Dangerous Book for Boys" for the younger set.

All Ages 5 out of 5 stars.

A fun read. Informative. Have been an outdoorsman for 40 years and I learned some new skills from this book.

Content is aimed primarily at youth of years-gone-by... I smiled plenty of times while reading it.

Editorial Review:

Written by a co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America, this appealing guide introduces the pleasures and challenges of the outdoors. With a cheerful, "can-do" attitude, Beard presents clear directions and simple diagrams for building kites, birdhouses, boats, igloos, and other fun projects, along with numerous helpful tips for campers.
