By far, One of the Best Paranormal Romance Series EVER 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I may be new to the paranormal romance genre, but I've read my fair share. Goin at it like a Lemming, I've read 6 series of the considered top writers in this genre with glee. And the Black Dagger Brotherhood is by far my favorite series. I'm happy with all of the series I've read, just this is a link all on it's Own. With Dark Lover, I was flushed, awed, blown away reading something so, unexpected. I have to admit, I wasn't sure at first. These books & characters were unlike any other I've read. But it quickly turned into passion for these vamp hunters that have it all: looks, brawn & a whole lotta attitude. Every one is different so that's the thrill of each story. I love the comradery, the family, the loyalty, the mission of these men. Their imperfections make them that more lovable. And the storylines... lust, murder & mayhem in the big city. Start with this one and just know it gets better & better!

Editorial Review:

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

I could not get past the poor writing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a newcomer to the romance world. But it doesn't matter what is the "genre" that readers or publisher designate a book; if it is well written, I'll enjoy it. When I read the synopsis, I thought the blend of "fish out of water" and a smart heroine who rescues him was an interesting premise. Julian, the "fish out of water", son of Aphrodite, should have been the ideal hero. He was in FACT a hero, a general, a warrior. He had been cursed for centuries to be trapped in a scroll alive, listening, waiting, starving until someone conjures him out to sexually satisfy a woman for 1 month and then be trapped back into the scroll until the next woman calls on his services. He started off well. When conjured up by "sex" therapist Grace and her dippy pal Selena, Julian reacts coherently to the strangeness of the modern world. As he is being tutored by Grace to live in the present day, Julian, under the influence of Grace, becomes a mishmash of sensitive listener of the children's book Peter Pan (??), a Dr. Phil follower, animalistic PROTECTOR of his "woman", chick magnet, phallic man who is able to rip men's heads off and at the same time, tenderly clean house.
It is when we deal with Grace that the book gets ridiculous. There is nothing realistic or coherent about her character. A woman who had bad sex once is able to support herself as a therapist to help people with sexual problems??? A woman who is being threatened by a deranged stalker and despite warnings and protection from her super hero lover Julian gets into an elevator that is old and unreliable and doesn't SEE the wierdo in the elevator before she steps in????
The introduction of the other Greek Gods and Goddesses and the mystery of why Julian was cursed was the worst part of the book. Nothing made sense. Nothing held up. The dialog was terrible between the Gods and the main characters of the book, Julian and Grace.
I can almost forgive the dumbness of the characters, but I can't forgive the terrible writing. It's not funny enough to be a comic novel, not good enough to be an adult novel and as for romance, it is too jumpy, undeveloped, unbelievable to enrapture the reader, which is what romance is supposed to be about. Other favorable reviewers say that the author's writing improves, I don't know if I want to waster my time waiting for the improvement.

Editorial Review:

Dear Reader,

Being trapped in a bedroom with a woman is a grand thing. Being trapped in hundreds of bedrooms over two thousand years isn't. And being cursed into a book as a love-slave for eternity can ruin even a Spartan warrior's day.

As a love-slave, I know everything about women. How to touch them, how to savor them, and most of all, how to pleasure them. But when I was summoned to fulfill Grace Alexander's sexual fantasies, I found the first woman in history who saw me as a man with a tormented past. She alone bothered to take me out of the bedroom and onto the world. She taught me to love again.

But I was not born to love. I was cursed to walk eternity alone. As a general, I had long ago accepted my sentence. Yet now I have found Grace--the one thing my wounded heart cannot survive without. Sure, love can heal all wounds, but can it break a two-thousand-year-old curse?

LOVING PHURY 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought this book was incredible! I love the changes she is making and the direction she is taking in this series...Ward is brillant! The Black Dagger Brotherhood is the BEST vampire series of ALL time! Looking forward to more...can't wait for Rehv!

Phury 1 out of 5 stars.

I am so disappointed in this story. I was a huge fan of the BDB series in the beginning and feel so let down after Z and Bella's story. I think Ward cheated her fans out of a good story for Phury with all the other plots she stuck in his book.

I didn't feel like she developed any chemistry for Cormia and Phury, their part felt rushed and unimportant in the scheme of this book and I was extremely disappointed as I loved and felt compassion for Phury in the other books.

Check this book out of the library if you want to continue with the series. It's not worth keeping.

Editorial Review:

As Primale of the Chosen, the fiercely loyal Phury has sacrificed himself for the good of his race. But his first mate, the Chosen Cormia, wants not only his body but his heart for herself. As tragedy looms over the Brotherhood’s mansion, Phury must decide between duty and love…

Die hard fan having a hard time here 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I discovered Feehan's series two years ago, and at the time I systematically devoured all of the books released in about two weeks time. I have to say that Dark Legend and Dark Demon are two of my favorites.

Once caught up, I began the fan's burden of waiting impatiently for new books to come out one by one as the year progressed. I tried getting into her other series as a means of distraction, but as enjoyable as some of them are, they don't really compare to the mythos she's created here in the Dark series.

Well, when Dark Possession came out, I had a really hard time. Feehan's blatant theft of White Wolf's World of Darkness games has always been a bit bothersome, especially when she pulled the mages in (mages who get corrupted into vampires by way of greed is the storyline for house Tremere in Vampire, the Masquerade), but injecting "eco-protectors" that are nature magic using Werewolves got a bit much, even for me.

On top of the plagiarism of ideas, Dark Possession was not very well written. The dialog and flow of events would get jumpy and confusing at times - like she didn't have as good of an editorial staff telling her where to go back and check flow in certain passages. Also, her heavy handedness with Solange and her obvious lifemate status with Zacarias was a bit harsh going down.

I thought maybe that I was imagining the drop in quality, so I went back and re-read the series from the beginning - nope, I wasn't imagining it. Books like Dark Desire and Dark Challenge are just much better framed, with better development, more seamless transitions and dialog, and more character development. They're also a bit longer - and the pages used for development show the benefit of the work.

So, it was with a bit of trepidation that I picked up Dark Curse. I wanted to know about the De La Cruz brothers and I had high hopes for their lifemates.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I didn't have the problems that some other reviewers had with Lara as a character - having a flawed heroine is not a problem and I agree that her fractured nature seems like a deliberate attempt to illustrate her mental scars. Unfortunately, Feehan has done the same kind of damage better in characters like Destiny, Jaxon, and Skyler.

Using language is not a bother - I've gotten used to it in my plethora of fantasy novels, and she was very good about giving us an approximate translation immediately after for those of us that didn't want to break pace to look up crap in the back of the book.

My biggest problem was the book itself. Again, jumpy imagery and flow, again, confusing switches between character focus, description, and dialog. Again, poor plot diagram and obvious places that needed better fleshing out - again, it looked like she isn't using or listening to editors of the same honesty and caliber as her previous work.

The book ends abruptly, with no resolution on Lara's status in the Carpathian society. The inclusion of extremophiles feels well researched but not well communicated and not embraced enough to connect the reader well with what Feehan is trying to convey.

I feel she needs to go back to her roots, spend time in the heads of her characters and spend the pages making us love them as opposed to trying to come up with the next weird gimmick to toss into the story line.

Most of us are here to find out what happens to our favorite characters, not to have to filter more incidental facts into an already convoluted storyline. Finish what you started with the mages, let us fall in love with your characters, stop adding more layers to a stack of problems that you haven't finished developing yet.

I'd rather read a sweet story about Skyler falling in love with Dimitri - focused on character development , a strait forward plot and no more weirdness piled on top - then another book like the last two.

Editorial Review:

Good, not what I expected.. felt a little watered down 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I came across this series and decided to give it a try. I ordered the first four books. This first book left me scratching my head in certain areas.

For example, parts of this book read as though it was the second in the series. It seemed like they would reference something that happened in the past and give you a quick up to speed as to what they were talking about and then move on from there. Something you would see in a second or third book to try to catch the reader up to date. I even went back and made sure I had the right book.

Characterization:

Overall the heroine is labeled as a strong "tough as nails" kind of gal. This I liked. She wasn't whiny and she was very straight forward. I immediately took a liking to Anita Blake. You don't really know alot about her past as it's never explained. Some parts are referenced very briefly as I've said before then forgotten, like we should know where she got that scar, or who this person is and how they came into her life already.

The main villian in this story is a child master vampire who is over a thousand years old. The first thing that came to my mind when it was said she was a child vampire, was Claudia from Interview with the Vampire. From then on that's who popped in my head everytime this child was in a scene. There were several other side villians all working together, but even though they seemed like a big deal to Anita, one even from her past, they were snuffed out very quickly at the end and had little importance in the outcome of the story.

There are a few different characters that are introduced in this book, yet I didn't feel like I got to see them develop or even learn anything about their personalities. It was pretty much "This is _____, he does this" Then they would move on.

Romance:

None. This was kind of disappointing to me since I thought this was a paranormal romance series. I suppose I was wrong. No one to blame but myself there.

Plot:

Decent. I felt it had great potential, but it felt very rushed at the end. Everything came to a head in the last five pages and was quickly solved. The most powerful child vampire went down too quickly and easily for how powerful and scary she was made out to be.

Overall:

I gave it three stars, because I felt like it was missing something. Which I understand it was the first book of the series, yet I felt like it didn't give me the information I was looking for right away. It was rather short and I felt it could have been a bit longer and the characters introduced at a slower pace with some more information of the past given. I felt like I was reading cliff notes on what the book should have been. Perhaps I judged too harshly. Maybe that's why there are so many books in the series. It could be that all of the past information in told in the remaining series. Yet, why make 16+ books of little info when you can write half as many longer and better written books is beyond me. Maybe it's just a way to get more money.

Will I read the other three? Yes. I bought them might as well read them. Perhaps they will get better with time.

Wolf folklore at its grandest 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I wasn't sure what to expect from Briggs after reading so much praise for her books but it didn't take long to feel as if I passed out and woke up in werewolf heaven. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love werewolf anything so this was such a treat, totally unexpected because urban fantasy these days is such a wide mix, usually with witches and vampires with a wolf here and there, but this beast of a book has teeth, muscle, wit, charm and plenty of brawn. Briggs did an incredible job of floating the reader in a sea of incredibly perceptive werewolf folklore that was simply stunning and extremely interesting and she made it feel primordial and Earthy, the instincts, thrills and even some passion was intelligent and very deep. This book is merely a perception that its fantasy and fun, everything reads so realistically that I had a hard time believing that this world was made up. It was a lot to get through as the plot thickened very quickly, the main heroine had no other choice but to plunge and run wild with the pack and troubles never seemed to stay far behind.

Basically this novel is about Mercedes, a seemingly young girl (you never know how old those creatures really are) that can turn into a coyote at will. An echo of Native American folklore runs thorough the tale as she keeps herself busy running a car repair shop, pretending that she's nothing but an ordinary citizen. Never mind that her next door neighbor Adam is an alpha male, that's the big werewolf on campus, running a large pack of fluffy, irksome and very volatile werewolves. There is also Stefan, her vampire friend whose care she's fixing, and if anyone reads these kinds of books seriously, then they know that vampires are so much more devious and complex than the cunning and ultra sensitive weres and they can never get along! It isn't long when the two sides start to merge into Mercy's life when a strange boy shows up at her door, smelling like a wolf. He brings trouble with him and pretty soon something happens and Mercedes has no choice but get closer to the wolves and vampires to try and fight a new enemy, trouble is no one knows who the person is and why they are killing werewolves with strange drugs. When trust and loyalty issues come up between friends and pack members things get ugly as no one ever wants to refuse a fight, and fight they do.

I can't even scratch the surface of how freaking awesome this book was, so rich and intricate, totally delectable and gut stirring- a definite hit in my opinion. Now all I have to do is read the rest of the series to quench my thirst, I'm very curious future that unfolds in front of Mercedes and her very cool albeit dangerous friends. Briggs makes the life of a wolf almost beautiful, of course I don't know if I'd want to be one but it would be lovely to turn into one and run like a dog into the sunset once in a while.

Happy Halloween `08

- Kasia S.

Editorial Review:

Mercy Thompson's life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn't exactly normal herself.

The downward spiral continues.. breaking point? 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have this to say to LKH, and about Blood Noir and the new direction of the Anita Blake series.

If you're going to write porn, learn to write it well. If you're going to continue calling these "real" novels, you might want to up the plot factor and let the sex become a delicious little treat every few chapters.

BN is too full of poorly written sexual encounters for me to consider it seriously. If you want to turn it into the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter (if you know what I mean, wink wink) series, by all means, but please, start to use words and phrases besides "breathy" and "just flat does it for me". It's like LKH has been walking the line between eroticism and being too embarrassed to write what she's really "seeing" for many books now, and it's getting old.

(A side note about LKH follows, feel free to skip to the bottom for the rest of my Blood Noir review)
If you'd like your audience to start taking you seriously again, please give us back our strong, independent Anita. And please stop giving her new metaphysical powers every time she gets into a fight (which is happening less and less frequently).

As for sleeping beauty, aka Marmee, that's a WONDERFUL plot waiting to happen.. it could take the series back where it belongs and onto a whole new level.. please write it on par with the first few books, and whatever you do.. please don't have Anita hop into the sack with the zombie/vampire/lycanthrope/ghoul/etc combination I'm sure you'll turn Marmee into.
/rant.

In short, Blood Noir is either a poorly planned and written novel, or a poorly executed porn. Given LKH's penchant for backtracking in just about every previous book, you could certainly skip this one and not miss a thing. My advice? Wait for paperback, or ignore it all together.

(Oh, and to echo a previous review I had written.. when are Anita and the gang going to start dressing like it ISN'T 1987?) How many royal blue shells, or shells of any color, for that matter, does Anita own? Does anyone call stockings "hose" anymore? And we all know the litany of complaints about the way she dresses the men. Yikes.
