Stupid woman! 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book, and probably more in the series, have a great premise so I gave it 2 stars. But I cannot tolerate the stupidity of Raven, the "heroine". I think women need to be independent, but not stupidly so. Time after time, this woman puts herself and her lover in jeopardy because she wants to be "herself" and she "can take care of herself". Which she never does. Even when she knows there is a inn full of assassins, she has to go back to "be by herself". I was annoyed at her every step of the way.

Give me strong heroines like Sookie Stackhouse and Riley Jensen, who make the smart decision most of the time. Really, I'd like to find some more like those since the women of this series, or at least this first book, are pitiful, and I'm not likely to read another in this series.

You wouldn't be such a great writer without your talent 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Having spent the last book almost exclusively on vampires, after the visit from the council, this book moves more to the lycanthrope side, which was nice. I enjoy the three main influences on Anita, her human life, the vampires, and the wereanimals; it's good to see the interplay between them. I'll bet the next book focuses on the human aspects more than either of the supernaturals.

I liked that this one left St. Louis, though honestly, I thought the reason Anita was drawn to Tennessee was a little bit lame. I mean, Richard's in trouble, she has to go help; I had no problem with that, especially since the reason Richard needs her help made perfect sense with his character -- the truth will set you free, yeah right; he already knew the cops were corrupt, the big dumb knight-in-shining-armor -- and I liked that the Master of the City told Anita no, and wouldn't back down from that, and tried to fight her off when she came and came pretty close to succeeding before she kicked his butt. I liked the vampire politics and such here; it seemed real, that Colin would be so afraid of people who managed to cow the Council, and who would, logically, be looking to expand into a territory they thought they could take over -- and why not his, since Richard has been spending so much time there getting in good with the local werewolves who resent Colin's control, anyway. I liked Richard's family, especially their relationship with their mother -- she was a great character -- and I liked the way Anita handled it all.

My problem was with the conservationist aspect. As much as I love nature and believe that it should be preserved and kept safe from human depredations, I am not willing to take up arms and fight people who are more careless and cold-hearted than necessarily evil, in my eyes. I mean, poachers are one thing, but the bad guys here were not after the trolls that Richard wanted to protect, and while I thought Niley should definitely be kept away from the land and richly deserved what he got in the end, I just don't agree with fighting quite that hard for it. So I thought Richard shouldn't have gone to the lengths he did, nor forced Anita and company to the lengths they had to go to, just to protect trolls from someone who, while evil, wasn't really a threat to them. Basically I thought Niley should have shown up as evil earlier than he did, because there wasn't enough motivation for everyone to stay in town and fight Colin until we discover who nasty Niley was -- and then, when we found out the truth about Niley's treasure hunt, it all got pointless again. So I didn't like that.

But thank God, Richard and Anita had sex. I prefer Jean-Claude as a character and as a boyfriend for Anita, because Richard is way too goddamned petty and arrogant, but I'm so very glad we got past that sexual tension crap. I know, I know, it won't ever go away, especially not since Richard insists on banging other women who then feel the need to come after Anita to fight her for Richard's love -- and if one more goddamned supercreature tells Anita she wouldn't be so tough without her guns, I'm gonna start screaming -- but at least Anita and Richard should be able to cool their ardor, I hope. Maybe they can move towards some kind of resolution now.

I hate the munin, which means it is a very good subplot because I'm supposed to hate them and what they do to Anita, and I liked all of the interplay with the lycanthropes, especially between Anita and the wereleopards. It made them more fully-fleshed characters, and I like that. I liked that Jason got to kick a little redneck butt, and I hope to see more of Shang-Da and Jamil; both strong characters, I think. An excellent book.

Editorial Review:

As an ancient Sumerian god, Sin was one of the most powerful among his pantheon.  . . Until the night Artemis brutally stole his godhood and left him for dead. For millennia, this ex-god turned Dark-Hunter has dreamed only of regaining his powers and seeking revenge on Artemis. If only life were that simple.

Unfortunately he has bigger fish--or in Sin’s case--demons, to fry. The lethal gallu that were buried by his pantheon are now stirring and they are hungry for human flesh. Their goal is to destroy mankind and anyone else who gets in their way.  Sin is the only one who can stop them—that is if a certain woman doesn’t kill him first. Unfortunately, Sin discovers that now he must rely on her or witness an annihilation of biblical proportions.  Enemies have always made strange bedfellows, but never more so than when the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Now a man who knows only betrayal must trust the one person most likely to hand him to the demons. Artemis may have stolen his godhood, but this one has stolen his heart. The only question is will she keep it or feed it to the ones who want him dead?

What jacques goes through really gets to you. This story is about a love that stands through thick and thin. Jacques needs Shea just as much as she needs him. This novel is well written and filled with enough drama for an emotional roller coaster ride.

Write on, read on

Hard time liking Jacques... 4 out of 5 stars.

Even after everything he'd been through, I had a hard time liking Jacques and I wanted to like him. He'd been so sweet and giving in Dark Prince, you just knew his story was going to be an easy one.

Boy was I wrong, but pleasantly surprised. Christine (funny, that I feel like I know her!) really made me WORK at getting to a place where I could even feel sorry for Jacques. That kept me turning pages.

You'll be rooting for him by the end!

Decent end to the first trilogy, great exit point for the series 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Anita Blake returns in this third installment of her well-known series. The police call Anita to consult on a murder and she quickly detects that the victim had been attacked by five vampires, mostly like a master and his pack. Since the few masters resident in St. Louis don't seem likely to have committed the crime, Anita starts looking for newcomers, but they just might find her first. As if this isn't enough, she receives a visit from her old friend Edward, the master assassin, who threatens to kill her if she doesn't reveal the name and resting place of the city's Master Vampire. All of this is just the start for Anita as she struggles to save the city, and herself, from a threat more ancient than anything she's ever faced before.

Circus of the Damned returns the focus to vampires and their politics after the voodoo detour of The Laughing Corpse. Jean-Claude, the city's Master Vampire, has given Anita two marks out of four toward becoming his human servant and very much wants her to accept the last two. Her refusal to do so is hurting is position among other vampires in the city. Other masters have come to the city ready to challenge Jean-Claude and try to woo Anita into joining their cause. Anita has to choose where her loyalties lie.

The major strength of this book shows in the action scenes. They take up a significant portion of the book and are uniformly suspenseful, even gripping at times. Anita lives in a very dangerous world and the author does an excellent job of portraying this. The weakest portion of the novel shows up whenever there is a conversation or Anita's narration includes her own thoughts. If Anita is talking to the police, they basically have the same conversation every time they meet at a crime scene. If she speaks to Jean-Claude, she has the same conversation every time. Even her own thoughts take on the exact same form over and over again.

After enjoying Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter), I was disappointed by The Laughing Corpse (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Book 2). I was hoping that Circus of the Damned would be a tie breaker of sorts to see if I would keep reading more or not. This is certainly a more entertaining book than The Laughing Corpse and provided a welcome return back to vampires as the chief villains. Unfortunately, Laurell Hamilton's writing style has grown so stale and cliché for me that I don't have the desire to go any further with Anita Blake. These books all read like a poor imitation of Dashiell Hammett and the style never grows or varies in the slightest. I'm glad I bought this book because it ties up all the loose ends from the prior two books, but there's nothing here compelling enough to make me want to keep coming back for more.

Editorial Review:

In Circus of the Damned a rogue master vampire hits town, and Anita gets caught in the middle of an undead turf war. Jean-Claude, the Master Vamp of the city, wants her for his own but his enemies have other plans. And to make matters worse, Anita takes a hit to the heart when she meets a stunningly handsome junior high science teacher named Richard Zeeman. They re two humans caught in the crossfire. Vampire/Werwolf Porn...WOW 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have been a fan of Laurel Hamilton's books since her very chaste beginnings (she had two boyfriends, but wouldn't sleep with either of them until she chose between them.) Now, the sex in her books is so explicit and kinky that a few years ago you could have bought them only in an adult book store. But the sex is not the main reason these books are so good. Her plot twists and turns are highly intricate and her characters, both human and non-human, are well drawn. A very petty criticism, however...I wish someone would Super Glue her hyphen key! She uses so many hyphenated phrases that it becomes annoying. But when you get into the hardcore action (whether sexual, investigative or battling) the books are pure fun.

Editorial Review:

Dating both a vampire and a werewolf isn't easy. But just to complicate Anita's already messy life, someone has put a price on her head. Love cannot save her this time, so she turns to Edward, hitman extraordinaire, for help. But finding the person behind the threat won't be easy, because as both a vampire hunter and zombie reanimator, Anita has made a lot of enemies-both human and otherwise.

If this book had been released first I never would have read the series 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In my opinion the publishing out of order did the author a favor. If this book had been the first in the series I never would have read the series nevermind pick up the next book. Single white vampire was laugh
out funny! while in this book Mom's mischief in trying to get her daughter cured and admitting her love for her lifemate puts her in danger
thanks to the maniplutive misunderstandings. Such as tying Greg back up
on her bed once her uncle shows up unexpectedly. She almost dies after
being staked at her friends house because of lack of blood for the nanos
to use to feed while fixing the wound. And Greg is awfully forgiving for
someone who is controlled and forced back to a house where he is held prisoner and gift wrapped as a present, as well as constantly having his
mind read. What truly interested me is we finally got to hear some about
Jean Claude in facts instead of just hearing he controled her. True it
isn't flattering but is everything you done in your life flattering? Be honest now. All in all an ok book that moves the series along.

Editorial Review:

That hot guy tied to Lissianna Argeneau's bed? He's not dessert—he's the main course!

Lissianna has been spending her centuries pining for Mr. Right, not just a quick snack, and this sexy guy she finds in her bed looks like he might be a candidate. But there's another, more pressing issue: her tendency to faint at the sight of blood . . . an especially annoying quirk for a vampire. Of course it doesn't hurt that this man has a delicious-looking neck. What kind of cold-blooded vampire woman could resist a bite of that?

Dr. Gregory Hewitt recovers from the shock of waking up in a stranger's bedroom pretty quickly—once he sees a gorgeous woman about to treat him to a wild night of passion. But is it possible for the good doctor to find true love with a vampire vixen, or will he be just a good meal? That's a question Dr. Greg might be willing to sink his teeth into . . . if he can just get Lissianna to bite.

This is how a vampire romance should be done! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Wow! Just yesterday I posted a review of "High Stakes" a tale of a human girl who meets and falls in love with a rich vampire. Although the story claimed to be laugh out loud funny, it wasn't. Imagine my delight when I dove straight into "How to Marry A Millionaire Vampire" to find out it had a similar plot with a much better drawn plot and characters. I thought for sure that this was going to be another vampire chick lit story but it was so much more! Shanna is a dentist in the Witness Protection Program after testifying in court against Russian mob members who have killed her friend. They are still after her and during an attack on her dental clinic, Roman shows up and rescues her. Roman is a weathly scientist vampire. He has formulated and produced a synthetic blood that has saved millions of human lives. During a recent product 'testing' he lost one of his fangs. If he doesn't want to be permanently lopsided, he must convice his dentist on the lam to fix his tooth. This story has so much adventure that it is hard for me to classify it simply as a Paranormal Romance. The romance, while definitely there, supplements rather than overwhelms this story. There are several sex scenes and actually that was a scene or two more than I need in my books, but I really feel like I witnessed the love grown between the two characters. (Another point seriously lacking in the previous book I mentioned). One thing that seems to make or break a book for me is the cast of supporting characters. I adored most of these characters. Roman's cast of security guards, the Highlanders are an absolute delight. They brought humor to the story as well as a special sensitivity. Roman's harem was another fun side bar to the story, and brought out a lot of Shanna's insecurities. This book is certainly not laughable chick lit, but I admit to one scene in particular that did have me actually laugh out loud! Only because a five for me is AMAZING do I give this book a super well deserved four. This little gem is better than similar series such as the before mentioned "Vegas Vampires" and Lyndsay Sand's Argeneau vampire romances. I can't believe I almost missed this one, I had it on my wish list for ages before I stumbled upon a copy and picked it up. I encourage you not to wait as long as I did. This is a seriously fun winner.

Editorial Review:

So what if he's a bit older and usually regards a human female as dinner, not a dinner date? Yes, Roman Draganesti is a vampire, but a vampire who lost one of his fangs sinking his teeth into something he shouldn't have. Now he has one night to find a dentist before his natural healing abilities close the wound, leaving him a lop–sided eater for all eternity.

Things aren't going well for Shanna Whelan either...After witnessing a gruesome murder by the Russian mafia, she's next on their hit list. And her career as a dentist appears to be on a downward spiral because she's afraid of blood. When Roman rescues her from an assassination attempt, she wonders if she's found the one man who can keep her alive. Though the attraction between them is immediate and hot, can Shanna conquer her fear of blood to fix Roman's fang? And if she does, what will prevent Roman from using his fangs on her...
