This is the updated version 5 out of 5 stars.

I own about 30 hiking guides and this book is the one I use the most often and consult before any hike. John Robinson is one of the gurus of Southern California hiking and his guides are usually dependable, accurate and full of information that will ensure your safety while in the mountains. He provides an adequate history of each hike, driving directions and fairly precise descriptions of where to locate each trailhead. It's important to note that some of his information is outdated; for example, you always must display your Forest Adventure Pass when parking your car in a California National Forest. Robinson doesn't mention this because his guide was written before the Pass became "essential."

Another strength of this book is that Robinson usually provides separate descriptions of various ways to summit a peak. He details the standard way of climbing San Gorgonio, as well as three alternate treks to the peak and this is a valuable tool for the experienced hiker. He does the same for San Jacinto, perhaps the premiere hike in Southern California (as well as the most arduous!) The guide is tailored towards seasoned hikers and if you're a neophyte, this probably wouldn't be your best choice. But if you love to hike and live in the L.A. area, the Robinson guide provides indispensible information. Highly recommended.

Great resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The title of the book caught my eye, and the book itself more than lived up to it! I live in downtown Chicago and was looking for hikes that could be done as day trips - the 60 hikes included are within this distance. The book makes it easy to search by type - for example, river hikes, lake hikes, hikes for wildlife viewing, hikes with children, and then also by distance (1-3 miles, 3-6 miles, and 6+ miles). Each hike has a trail map, directions, a full description, and key info at a glance (e.g. length, configuration, difficulty, scenery, facilities, and even exposure - shady, sunny etc.).

Editorial Review:

Focusing on the Chicago area’s urban and rural areas and everything in between, this book features classic hikes at such lovely spots as Starved Rock State Park, as well as gems like the LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area in northwestern Indiana. Extensive key-at-a-glance information makes it a snap to choose a hike based on length, difficulty, and scenery. Helpful lists highlight the best hikes for children, for wildlife viewing, and other categories. This edition includes five new hikes.

Very handy tool for families in Colorado 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I've lived in Colorado for over 20 years and have rarely taken advantage of the natural beauty. Now with four children, I'm anxious to show them our "backyard" and use the opportunity to teach them about nature, responsibility as well as getting exercise.

Since I am not very experienced, I looked for some resource to recommend trails for hikes with children ages newborn to 7 years. I settled on this book after seeing trails I was familiar with and agreeing with the descriptions.

I find it helpful that the author points out interesting features to help educate your family. For instance, on one trail, there is descriptions of a water pipeline to place your hands on and feel the water rushing through, abandoned cabins, train tracks and so forth that can make hiking interesting and with something to look forward too.

The icons for each trail are also helpful for quick trail difficulty, seasons and trail features. Some trails are marked for handicapped (which is useful for strollers too).

The maps are helpful for planning and evaluating the trails. However, I would recommend getting a proper topographical map for actual hiking. The book is thick stock and is not easy to keep open if you are constantly using it for reference when hiking.

I plan to use this book often this summer to find local locations to take me children hiking.

Editorial Review:

Short hikes for short legs (and those still young at heart) in Colorado.

*86 hikes chosen for kid appeal *Trails accessible from Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Vail, Aspen, and Crested Butte *New "Great Getaways" chart of Colorado's 18 best family fun destinations for hiking, camping, swimming, and more

Lichen Loop, Piedra River Trail, Baby Bathtubs Trail: these are just a few of the new hikes families will enjoy together in the completely updated edition of this popular guide. Hikes range from 1 to 8 miles in length, with optional turn around points for tired feet. They feature "environmental close-ups" to keep young hikers turned on to hiking-for example, you might search for polliwogs, discover wildflowers, or explore sand dunes. Also included is advice on hiking with children and tips for keeping it fun.

Very Few Mid-Range Hikes 3 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I generally like Schneider's guides, and appear to be in the minority here, but I did not love this one. It is a surprisingly thick book with lots of trails; unfortunately most of them are either short tourist strolls or long, multi-day back country excursions. We had difficulty finding hikes that called out to us in the 12-16 mile range (usually not a problem for us - most guides leave us wishing we had 2 weeks to do all the long day hikes we are interested in) and ended up going with ranger recommendations when we got there. If you have 5-10 days for a backcountry trek, this is definitely the book for you. But if you are looking for long day hikes you may want to look elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

This thoroughly revised and updated guide features 109 hikes in Yellowstone National Park. Readers will find detailed maps, field-checked information on all of the trails, elevation charts, difficulty ratings, and ratings and information on backcountry camping. Hiking tips and information on avoiding confrontations with bears round out this classic guidebook.

Introducing A Part of Pennsylvania Everyone Should Know 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book explodes with information, history and suggestions. It was a daunting task, I'm sure, to collect all of the contents, but well worth it. The Forbes Trail is something all Pennsylvanians, and for that matter, all Americans, should explore and relish. It's such a vital part of who we are and how we arrived at where we are.

The suggestions in the book for places to stay, to see, where to eat, things to do, places to explore - all abound, which makes for a rich presentation. There are lots of things to do which are off the beaten path. With this book in hand, adventures beckon. I recommend it heartily.

Editorial Review:

The story of the Forbes Campaign, one of the most dramatic and significant chapters of the French and Indian War, unfolds vividly in Pennsylvania's Forbes Trail, a new book published as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of Pittsburgh. The book takes an engaging approach, combining gripping history with tools to help contemporary travelers discover historic sites, the great outdoors and family attractions along the trail today.

This is a great book for hiking with your dog on trails in the western and eastern parts of North Carolina. This book is a part of a series by Mountaineer books and gives great details about elevation, water, trail difficulty, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who walks their dog on trials and and in the outdoors. Plus all dogs love the trails anyway. Great pictures of dogs on the trails too!

Worth waiting for! Worth the money! A great gift! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is the book I've been waiting for ever since I saw Eric's article and photos on the undiscovered Trap Hills in the Western U.P. in an outdoors magazine. Eric, who lives in Milwaukee, combines the been-there trail notes with the perspective of someone widely familiar with what the Upper Great Lakes has to offer hikers.

The actual book chapters I read completely lived up to my expectations. Now, alas, I've mislaid my copy and must write my review from memory. My husband and I do a very wide-ranging guide to U.P. points of interest and history - www.hunts-upguide.com. We are always looking for good books that do certain subjects on a deeper level. Thank you, Eric, for taking the time to explore our beautiful, out-of-the-way corner of the world.

What a great guy 5 out of 5 stars.

I met Eric randomnly while on a camping trip with some friends. We came upon him while he was fishing and he just struck right up about hiking and camping and ended up giving us a suggestion for finishing up our day in the area, casually mentioning later on that he had written a guide about hiking the UP. A girl and I took him up on the idea and it was easily one of the most magical things I have ever done. Don't know as if it's in the book or not, but as it turned out my mom had bought it that same day by coincidence. Just wanted to say thanks to Eric (and I'm going on the other trip too) and tell all you people out there that he really knows what he's talking about!!!

Varied but difficult hikes! 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book has taken us thorugh tropical rain forests, dense valleys, and sun-parched craters. The variety of hikes is wonderful. There is something for everyone in here, well, everyone except the beginner hiker. It seems even beginning hikes in the book are a bit challenging. This is because Oahu has such a varity of terrain. However, if you are looking to take a relaxing stroll through the woods this book will be of no use to you. We have children so we only do the novice hikes and even those are challenging, but fun and dirty! This is probalby for more serious hikers and some of the hikes mentioned are 12 miles long! That takes a long time in Oahu's terrain! The author always write in interesting tidbits of info in his hike description which I like. Things such as the where the strawberry guava trees are, where the WWII tunnel is, etc...The one negative to this book is that many of the hikes the author writes about are closed to the public and you have to write for permission to hike them. To me, this is a pain and I am not organized enough to plan ahead and do this. If you are better organized than I, I am sure you would enjoy them. We are just a bit more spontaneous. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Six new hikes have been added to this revised, updated edition. The notes section has been expanded to help readers readily identify geological features, historical points of interest, and commonly encountered plants and birds while on the trail.

Refreshing and inspiring 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is an essential book for anyone who has thru hiked the AT, or is a vicarious thru hiker. Earl Shaffer is the first confirmed person to complete the trail in one season, though a group of boy scouts later claimed they made the entire journey sometime in the mid-30's. Shaffer writes very well, in a phlegmatic, relaxed and spare style. He was an environmentalist and naturalist in an era when few were of the same mindset. As a former WWII GI, he was restless with civilian life and just decided to walk from Springer Mountain to Mount Katahdin. What a pioneer he was, even though he didn't know it!

Schaffer describes many fascinating things about the trail and the physical and mental effects resulting from hiking 2,100 miles. Though the journey took place in 1948, there is nothing dated about the book, except the fact that many shelters have been updated or added, and more towns dot the trail these days. This is a great book for anyone addicted to literature on the beloved Appalachian Trail.

Editorial Review:

A hiking legend, Earl Shaffer in 1948 came home from the South Pacific and set out to prove the then-little-known Appalachian Trail--its maintenance largely and necessarily neglected during the war--could be walked in a single continuous journey from Georgia to Maine. This is his own lyrical account of that walk, undertaken also to try to shake off World War II combat, during which he lost his best friend. Illustrated with his photographs during the hike, this book has inspired thousands to attempt similar "thru-hikes." In 1965, he walked it the other way, and, in 1998 at age 79, he did it again...on a trail far different from the one he basically rediscovered at mid-century, one that was more difficult than he liked as he neared his eighth decade. Originally self-published (300 copies), Walking with Spring was first professionally typeset and published in 1983; this is the second printing of a 1996 edition. Only the covers have changed since 1983.
