The Men In The Nets And Their Masks! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The Book "SAVING FACE: The Art and history of the Goalie Mask", by Jim Hynes and Gary Smith, proves to be a captivating journey back in time. This wonderful and lavishly illustrated book, traces the history of the Goalie mask from it's very antiquated beginnings, to the modern era. This book will have special meaning for all those older fans who were there during the the decades of the 1960's and 1970's, when the goalie mask changed the the art of goaltending forever. On November 1st,1959, Montreal goalie Jacques Plante was struck in the face by a puck shot by New York Ranger Andy Bathgate. Against his coaches wishes, Jacques came out of the lockeroom and with mask in hand, and the rest is history. Jacques plante and his innovation of the goalie mask, started the golden age of goaltending as both a protective piece of equipment and an artistic statement of individual personality, in which each mask became as famous as the men who wore them. As one reads through this encyclopedic like history of the mask, the reader is treated to a tour deforce of over 50 years of NHL mask innovation. See all the greats in both text and photo's, as you are taken behind the scenes of each mask, and learn about the men who made them, and the players who made them famous. This is a who's who of goaltending. Names Like Ken Dryden, Gerry Cheevers, Tony Esposito, Terry Sawchuk, Gump Worsley, Johnny Bower, Glenn Hall, Eddie Giacomin, Bernie Parent, and Martin Brodeur are just a few of the names you will recognize. I consider this book a must have for any fans, players and coaches both young and old, who have an appreciation for the game of ice hockey. More importantly, this is one of the finest hockey history books ever written. This book comes with my highest recommendation, and should be a part of any serious hockey library.

Editorial Review:

A pictorial history of the hockey goalie's "other face"

In team sports, where the uniform reigns supreme, there is no more recognizable piece of sporting equipment than the goalie mask. Reflecting the often quirky character of the goalie, the artwork on a goalie mask can be a stylized and richly evocative portrait of the man beneath. With photographs from the Hockey Hall of Fame's unparalleled collection of masks, this unique book offers diehard hockey fans a rare look at the world of the goalie mask. Full of fascinating information on the history and construction of the goalie mask, the book also includes sidebars on mask artists and makers and stories and photographs of some of the greatest masks in the game.

Jim Hynes (Montreal, QC) is a freelance writer and editor. Gary Smith (Grand Falls, NB, Canada) has crafted masks for the CBC's Canada-Russia '72 and for the movie Miracle.

Daves' A Killer, author that is! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have read many literature articles over the years and this I must say ranks as the best ever. Mr. Dave "Killer" Hanson has written a very poignant story about his life and a movie that is the best sports movie to date. The violent battles and off ice shenanigans are extraordinarily told by the man who did them and a movie deal about this book is certainly forthcoming. I can truthfully say buy this book and you won't be disappointed. Dave you are a "Killer!"

Editorial Review:

Thirty years after its cinematic debut, "Slap Shot" remains one of the most popular sports movies of all time - in 2007 "GQ Magazine" named it 'the best sports movie of the past 50 years.'Starring the legendary Paul Newman, the movie was based on the hilarious and outrageous antics of the fictitious Charlestown Chiefs, as tough-as-nails minor league hockey team in the early 1970s. In financial trouble and due to fold at the end of the season, they bring in The Hanson Brothers - three of the toughest hockey players around - in a desperate bid to sell tickets. What ensues is pure comic genius. Now for the first time, Dave Hanson - who played ringleader Jack Hanson in the film - not only opens the vault and dishes the dirt on the making of the movie, from bench-clearing brawls, to practical jokes on set, to the legendary partying that went on after the director yelled 'Cut!,' but also how the movie changed his, and many of the cast and crews lives forever.

Editorial Review:

Black and Gold is a pictorial romp through four decades of one of the NHL’s great Original Six franchises—a personal history of the Boston Bruins as seen through the lens of Steve Babineau, team photographer for 35 years.

Over his long career, Babs, as he is known, has captured over one-third of the history of this storied franchise with his work. He has seen many of the greats in the organization and he has photographed them all for the record: Bobby Orr, John Bucyk, Phil Esposito, Terry O’Reilly, Ray Bourque, Cam Neely, Gerry Cheevers, Don Cherry and the Lunchpail Gang, and many more.

In glorious color and classic black and white, Black and Gold lovingly captures four decades of Bruins history and the team’s characters in over 300 photographs, many of them never published before.

With veteran hockey journalist, broadcaster and author Rob Simpson, Babs shares his memories and best-loved moments with the team: from growing up a Bruins fan, to his own early hockey-playing days, getting interested in photography and coming to work for the Bs, and eventually documenting the team and its players through four decades. Black and Gold is an up-close and personal look at the Bruins players, coaches, and fans, as well as the old Boston Garden and the characters who inhabited it.

As well as Babs’ perspective on the Bruins—from the stands, the penalty box, the press box, and the arena rafters—Black and Gold features interviews with many former Bruins, coaches and general managers, peppering the pages with great first-hand stories and anecdotes on what it means to be a Bruin and share in the great tradition of the franchise; and on the hundreds of blueliners, scorers and playmakers, grinders and enforcers, goalies, and coaches that passed through the organization in the four decades that Babs caught on film.

Thirty-five years and some 1,700 games have gone by since Babineau shot his first game back in the 1973-74 season, and he’s still counting. Black and Gold is a fitting testament to that great career, and to those who fill its pages.

This stunning collection of photographs, of magic moments and commentary from the last four decades will be sure to bring back memories for every Bruins fan who bleeds black and gold.

Editorial Review:

"Never one to mix words, [Don] Cherry provides an analysis that transcends the reporting found in printed dailies, websites, and typical television broadcasts. That is what he is most often criticized for: not being like everyone else. Cherry provides poignant analysis about the game of hockey that escapes most other commentators. He endeavours to elucidate the small moments within a game that may appear inconsequential, but are integral to the outcome: a failure to clear the zone, a player shying away from a check, a poor line change. This is where Cherry is most valuable as a commentator. As a former coach, one who found great success, he is able to give viewers insights unlike anyone else."
—Ian Smart, 411mania.com

Don Cherry has been named a National Hockey League Coach of the Year with a winning percentage of over .600 and also received Coach of the Year honours in the American Hockey League. His comments on Hockey Night in Canada’s "Coach's Corner" routinely make headlines as they entertain, educate, and often upset some fans throughout North America. He may be controversial, but no one can deny the popularity he enjoys; popularity that was reflected in his top 10 ranking in the competition to determine "The Greatest Canadian."

Now from Grapes himself comes the book that hockey fans of all ages have been waiting for. Written with veteran sports journalist Al Strachan, here are Don Cherry's favourite stories from his career in hockey. And you can imagine the stories he has to tell.

The Hockey Bible 5 out of 5 stars.

This sits right in front of me, on the coffee table within reach while watching the NHL Center Ice package on DirecTv. You and your buddy start talking about a player, then you look him up...I get one every year. It's fun to leaf through it. I look forward to it's release every summer, and it's a must for any broadcaster who is going to talk about the sport.

OPEN ICE

In this new collection of exquisitely crafted essays, veteran sports writer Jack Falla writes about hockey as he has seen and experienced it over the past fifty years. Reflections on the game, its personalities and arenas, and twenty-five years of commitment to creating his backyard rink are woven into family memories and other fond remembrances.

A heartwarming and amusing collection, Open Ice is sure to touch every hockey fan and all those who have grown up loving the game.

Praise for Jack Falla's Previous Collection of Essays, Home Ice

“literary hot chocolate that will warm your heart.”
—The New York Times

“While Home Ice may be a book about hockey and the charm of backyard rinks, it is more than that, too. It is a book about relationships—between fathers and sons, husbands and wives—and how the game can bridge the gaps that commonly occur between generations in a family... It's a treasure and one that readers will be happy they searched out. Possibly the best hockey book since Ken Dryden's The Game.”
—The Globe & Mail

“A gentle and powerful book.”
Dave Bidini, Author of
Tropic of Hockey and The Best Game You Can Name.

The bestselling bio of NHL Hall-of-Famer Patrick Roy--now in a new English-language edition

Published in Canada in November 2007, the French-language version of this book, Le Guerrier, became an instant hit, quickly selling out its first print run. For fans of Patrick Roy, the legendary NHL goalie, the book provided the first truly intimate, no-holds-barred look at the early life and meteoric rise of their hero, told from a unique perspective: his father's. Written by Michel Roy, himself an impassioned hockey fan, Patrick Roy offers keen insights on Patrick's indomitable will to win, how he revolutionized goaltending and popularized the butterfly style, as well as his faults and difficulties, including the heartbreaking move from Montreal that nearly broke his spirit.

Michel Roy (Knowlton, QC, Canada) is an author and Chair of Telefilm Canada. He is a former film editor, was Deputy Minister of Tourism for Quebec, and has recently produced two jazz albums.

Wide variety of stories 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This mini-anthology has a wide range of hockey stories from one written by the American, Pulitzer-winning author William Faulkner (this story was junk, though well written if you like Faulkner) to life on the road as a minor league player hoping to be called up (poignantly and rawly written like the life itself), to a homily to Toe Blake, to a portrait of The Great One (Gretzky) by Peter Gzowski, to how to make your own backyard rink.

The quality of writing is generally very good and virtually every story offers an interesting perspective on the game. Stories are short so you can read one on the subway or before you go to bed at night. All in all, a decent hard cover to have on your bookshelf.

Any true hockey fan will relish this special book 5 out of 5 stars.

Being an avid hockey fan I wasn't too expectant upon reading "short stories" about the great moments in hockey and being surprised by what they had to say. Imagine my delight when I found not only interesting and completely out of the ordinary tales of some of the most memorable moments in hockey, right before my eyes, but stories told that I knew with inside looks that make them seem completely different than any other I've read.

"The Greatest Hockey Stories Ever Told" is a wonderful compilation of stories regarding the greatest game on ice, hockey. With everything from "The Miracle Team" from a perspective you probably have never heard before to "A Portrait of The Great One," Wayne Gretzky, you will find each story with its own form and style, told like no other. With so many authors contributing to the book, there is an infinite amount of perspectives that you probably have never seen before on the game. Hockey greats like Toe Blake, Wayne Gretzky, and the infamous Montreal Canadiens and their years of reign are all topics of conversation in this great book of hockey stories and memories.

The style and content are so unique to any other hockey book I've ever read that I am somewhat speechless as to how to compare it to anything else. Loaded with stories, insider's views, coaches' memories, team moments and so much more, any true hockey fan will relish this special book and all its content. The ability to read a story and put it down to come back to later makes it a great book to simply keep around to get your "hockey fix," especially out of season! So after the Cup Craze is over, pull up a seat and enjoy an inside look at the real life stories of hockey and all of its glorious moments. Even the most well-versed and trivia filled amongst us will find an inside look at this great life on and off the ice in "The Greatest Hockey Stories Ever Told."

Editorial Review:

Finally, hockey's rabid fans have an anthology of their own, a showcase of writing as dynamic and diverse as the fastest sport itself.

No Longer a Dummy! 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Hockey For Dummies was incredibly helpful when my son began playing the sport and we ended up getting so hooked that we started attending collegiate as well as professional hockey games. Nothing like a bunch of new hockey moms inquiring, "what is icing?" to which another replies, "it's something you put on a cake."

The book's format was very easy to follow, so no matter what you want to learn (penalties, history, etc.) you will be able to get a no-nonsense answer to your inquiry. Understanding something about the sport makes it much more enjoyable to watch. I was particularly impressed with the guidelines for watching the games in person versus the televised ones.

Editorial Review:

Like its teammates in the Dummies series, Hockey for Dummies is cleverly organized and clearly focused, geared to both fans and players. It is filled with fun stuff such as lists of the 10 best things about the game, the 10 best players, the 10 best teams, and, given even a novice's inability to mistake hockey for Zen, the 10 best hitters. Hockey for Dummies also contains plenty of good, practical advice: Wayne Gretzky offers a clinic on passing, Mark Messier hosts one on face-offs, Brian Leetch counsels players in clinics on defense, and Ron Hextall teaches goaltending. Authors John Davidson and John Steinbreder explain rules, discuss equipment, and detail strategies. They even give pointers on how best to appreciate the game on television. It seems the only thing missing from Hockey for Dummies is a dental referral for the first time one of your incisors gets in the way of an errant puck.

Editorial Review:

The definitive history of the Montreal Canadiens – to coincide with their Centenary in 2009.

Before there were slapshots, Foster Hewitt, or even an NHL, there were the Canadiens. Founded on December 4, 1909, the team won its first Stanley Cup in 1916. Since then, the Canadiens have won 23 more championships, making them the most successful hockey team in the world. The team has survived two wars, the Great Depression, NHL expansion, and countless other upheavals, thanks largely to the loyalty of fans and an extraordinary cast of players, coaches, owners, and managers.

The Montreal Canadiens captures the full glory of this saga. It weaves the personalities, triumphs, heartaches, and hysteria into a compelling narrative with a surprise on every page. It sheds new light on old questions – how the team colours were chosen, how the Canadiens came to be known as the Habitants – and goes behind the scenes of tumultuous recent events still awaiting thorough examination: why Scotty Bowman was passed over as general manager after Sam Pollock resigned; why Pollock’s successor, Irving Grunman, failed; why Serge Savard was dumped as GM so hastily despite his record.

Colourful and controversial, The Montreal Canadiens is the history of a team that has been making news for 100 years – and continues to do so with the return of legendary player Bob Gainey as general manager, determined to bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal.
