Delightful 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is perfectly delightful. I purchased this for my husband, and he has spent hours pouring over it. The pictures are wonderful and very high quality. He swears I bought it because so many pictures are of him in trouble at the golf course (not true!), but loads of laughs.

Editorial Review:

Charles Lindsay's photographs offer a humorous and inquisitive foray into the hazards of lost golf balls - rough, woods, bunkers and wetlands - as well as unexpected encounters with wildlife on and off the green. An avid golfer, he photographs his way to the heart of the matter with a light touch and an eye for telling details. In the process he discovers balls ravaged by golfers, 'gators and foxes. Lindsay even comes face to face with what is believed to be the world's oldest golf ball - unearthed in a cellar in the Netherlands alongside a primitive club - and the infamous spot in the tall grass where Tiger Woods lost a ball that cost him the British Open. There are photographs from golf courses all over the world. The Foreword by John Updike is a celebration of golf and nature and why the two are not always compatible. A humorous anecdote by Greg Norman and quotes from other well-known golfers and celebrities also appear throughout the book.

What could have been... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I came into this book with an open mind. However, Bret Hart's book was supposedly based on "fact" because he carried around a tape recorder for twenty years so he'd remember, right? Not quite, too many times things seemed to change to make Bret look like the good guy when events have been noted to have happened different ways in other books.

It was nice to see a lot of things from Bret's perspective, but let's get real, the man has been whining non stop for nearly 12 years now...did you think the book was going to be any different?

Hogan? Sure, everyone had an issue with Hogan, but Bret, who do you think packed those arenas for you before you and Anvil had ever put pink on the first time?

Flair? Bret, when you try to say that Flair isn't one of the best workers AND ring generals of all time, you put yourself in a class with Scotty Steiner...when it comes to common sense, not a good class to be in.

Michaels? Why Bret? Because he did what the boss said? Because he had clearly surpassed you both in and out of the ring? Because he is still one of the top 5 wrestlers in North America today? I will give Bret credit for one thing when it comes to Shawn though, he never EVER tried to say Shawn wasn't a great worker...there is no way he could have said that and had anyone believe another word of his book.

However, if you got around the "everyone screwed me, I'm the best there is..." crap, you got some great insight into the locker room and the Hart Family. Take it with a grain of salt, of course, but it was still very, very interesting.

Very well written, very eloquent, very good story...if you could have just stopped all the whining you would have almost has something as good as Jericho and Foley's debut books...almost.

Editorial Review:

Written without collaborators and based on decades of tape recordings he made throughout his career, HITMAN is Bret Hart's brutally honest, perceptive and startling account of his life in and out of the ring that proves once and for all that great things come in pink tights.

the match 5 out of 5 stars.

Talks about and brings back the birth of the excitement of Professional Golf. The facts about the personal histories of the early major players are interesting.Their personal stories bring back memories of these men who were major factors in making the game what it is today. One of the players in this "Match" is a personal friend and the story of his life makes you understand why he became such a great individual. The story of "The Match" itself is exciting to read and very hard to put down. For anyone with even a remote interest in the game it will make you a fan.

Editorial Review:

From the best selling author of The Greatest Game Ever Played is this powerful, emotional and suspenseful story of "the greatest private match ever played." The challenge was staged in 1956 by Eddie Lowery, former 10-year old caddie to U.S. Open Champion Francis Ouimet, and pitted amateurs Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi against Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, the game's greatest living professionals, with 14 major championships between them. In author Mark Frost's peerless hands, the recollections of this immortal foursome and the game they played that day come to life.

Editorial Review:

In 1982, having sold his jazz bar to devote himself to writing, Murakami began running to keep fit. A year later, he’d completed a solo course from Athens to Marathon, and now, after dozens of such races, not to mention triathlons and a dozen critically acclaimed books, he reflects upon the influence the sport has had on his life and—even more important—on his writing.

Equal parts training log, travelogue, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers his four-month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon and takes us to places ranging from Tokyo’s Jingu Gaien gardens, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston among young women who outpace him. Through this marvelous lens of sport emerges a panorama of memories and insights: the eureka moment when he decided to become a writer, his greatest triumphs and disappointments, his passion for vintage LPs, and the experience, after fifty, of seeing his race times improve and then fall back.

By turns funny and sobering, playful and philosophical, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running is rich and revelatory, both for fans of this masterful yet guardedly private writer and for the exploding population of athletes who find similar satisfaction in running.

Old design was best!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Like many others, I was just about to order the 2009 version, but after reading reviews and seeing the changes made, it looks like I may have to go with another product to record my daily runs. I have used this runner's diary every year, going back to 2000, and it's always been tried and true. If the format is this different, I'm afraid I won't be a repeat customer for this one.
I suggest they make an emergency change if they want sales to remain at the level they were. Please....leave the format as it was!!

Great log book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my fourth year using Jerome's running log and it serves its purpose well: day-by-day recording with weekly summary in the back; record log for race performances; and great inspirational quotes each week along with a narrative written by Jerome to coincide with every new month of training. I also keep a record of telephone numbers for shoe companies, websites for marathons and vendors.

Editorial Review:

A favorite log and calendar among runners for thirty years, this 2009 edition boasts a fresh, new look that keeps pace with today's runner. More tips and all new color photos can be found alongside inspiring quotes and Marty Jerome's insightful and engaging monthly essays. There's space for tracking mileage, time, and body weight and plenty of room for notes. This terrific calendar is essential gear for the competitive and noncompetitive runner alike.

Editorial Review:

Finally, runners at all levels can improve their race times while training less, with the revolutionary Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training (FIRST) program.

Hailed by the Wall Street Journal and featured twice in six months in cover stories in Runner’s World magazine, FIRST’s unique training philosophy makes running easier and more accessible, limits overtraining and burnout, and substantially cuts the risk of injury, while producing faster race times.

The key feature is the "3 plus 2" program, which each week consists of:

-3 quality runs, including track repeats, the tempo run, and the long run, which are designed to work together to improve endurance, lactate-threshold running pace, and leg speed

-2 aerobic cross-training workouts, such as swimming, rowing, or pedaling a stationary bike, which are designed to improve endurance while helping to avoid burnout

With detailed training plans for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon, plus tips for goal-setting, rest, recovery, injury rehab and prevention, strength training, and nutrition, this program will change the way runners think about and train for competitive races.

Amby Burfoot, Runner’s World executive editor and Boston Marathon winner, calls the FIRST training program "the most detailed, well-organized, and scientific training program for runners that I have ever seen."

Editorial Review:

Athlete. Runner. Marathoner. Are these words you wouldn't exactly use to describe yourself? Do you consider yourself too old or too out of shape to run a marathon? But somewhere deep inside have you always admired the people who could reach down and come up with the mental and physical strength to complete such a daunting and rewarding accomplishment? It doesn't have to be somebody else crossing the finish line. You can be a marathoner. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer is based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa, which was featured in a Runner's World article titled "Marathoning 101." The class has been offered five times over 10 years, and all but one student finished the marathon. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities. You don't have to love to run -- you don't even have to like it -- but you have to realize that you are capable of more than you have ever thought possible. One participant in the program explained it like this: "I'm doing this for me -- not for others or the time clock. I just feel better when I run, plus it helps me to cope with things in general. The skills we've learned in this class don't apply just to marathoning -- they apply to life! Just like you never know what the next step in a marathon will bring, so too, you never know what will happen next in life. But if you don't keep going, you're never going to find out. By staying relaxed, centered, and positive you handle just about anything that comes your way." This is marathon running for real people, people with jobs and families and obligations outside of running. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer has proven successful for men and women of all ages. Now let it work for you.

Editorial Review:

When 39,195 competitors thunder over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to begin the thirty-eighth running of the famed New York City Marathon, they experience one of the most exhilarating moments in sports. But as they cross five towering bridges and five distinct boroughs, carried 26.2 miles by the cheers of two million fans and by their own indomitable wills, grueling challenges await them.

New York Times sportswriter Liz Robbins brings race day to life in this gripping saga of the 2007 Marathon, weaving the unforgettable stories of runners into a vibrant mile-by-mile portrait of the world's largest marathon.

The professionals pound out the suspense in two thrilling races. Paula Radcliffe, the women's world record holder from Great Britain, returns with new resolve after having given birth nine months earlier; Gete Wami, her longtime rival from Ethiopia, tries to win her second marathon in just five weeks; and Latvia's Jelena Prokopcuka desperately hopes for her third straight New York title.

If the women's race plays out like a mesmerizing chess game, then the men's race quickly turns into a high-speed car chase. South Africa's Hendrick Ramaala, eager to recapture glory at age 35, surges to lead the pack as Kenya's Martin Lel and Morocco's Abderrahim Goumri stay within striking range.

While the professionals offer insight into the intense, often painful experience of being an elite athlete, the amateurs provide timeless stories of courage and obsession that typify today's marathoner: Harrie Bakst, a cancer survivor at 22, who is a first-timer; Pam Rickard, a 45-year-old mother of three from Virginia, who is a recovering alcoholic; and 65-year-old Tucker Andersen, who has run the race every year since 1976.

Enlivening the history of the New York City Marathon with stories of such legends as the late Fred Lebow, the race's charismatic founder, and nine-time champion Grete Waitz, A Race Like No Other provides a curbside seat to the drama of the first Sunday in November. Feel the anxiety at the start in Staten Island. Listen to gospel choirs in Brooklyn and the accordion in Queens. Bask in the delirious sound tunnel of Manhattan's Upper East Side. Hit The Wall in the Bronx. And overcome agony in the last hilly miles before arriving in Central Park—exhausted yet exhilarated—at the finish line.

Packaged very well upon arrival. Cover is bent and book has a bad odor to it.

Mediocre and not systematic 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is comprised of tips from the top instructors in the country. However, this is a more of an annual for the Golf Magazine by reproducing the 'tips' that were published from the prior year. The title does not live up to its hyper or its name.

It is organized well and the short bullet format and clear illustrations are good.

However, this is not a system upon which you should base your learning. Different 'tips' may not work for a particular style of swing.

If you are one who learns from 'tips' AND you don't subscribe to the magazine, get this book.

If you want to learn something from scratch or are a routine/average hacker, stay away. You should adopt any one of the dozens of 'systems of instruction' and stick with one.

The following is a book of a similar genre covering tips to play better, not a system.

Breaking 100, 90, 80: Taking Your Game to the Next Level with the Best Teachers in Golf

VERDICT:

For most golfers, I do not recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

The best instructors in America give you their best lessons to improve your swing step-by-step, drive the ball farther, chip it closer to the hole, escape bunkers with ease and make the putts you should with easy-to-understand tips and drills accompanied by hundreds of color photographs.
