This is a super book and pretty much all you really need to maintain your mtn bike. I'm so turned off by the thousand page manual books on bike repair. This book does it in only few hundred pages and in full color. Foreword by Gary Fisher, the father of mtn biking, lets you know this book is the real deal!

very good maintenance book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has plenty of color pictures and the text has enough information to perform most of the maintenance or repairs in a mountain Bike. I found this book very useful, being a self taught weekend "mechanic". Overall I recommend this book, I also have the Big Blue Book that is a little less graphic, I think its a good idea to have (and read)at least these two books if you want to do bike maintenance specially in models with newer components.

I really don't know if someone can improve your skills by reading a book. If you think so, Brian Lopes book is a better choice. Ned's book, however, is a really motivating tool. You will want to ride 100000000000000000 km after reading the book. As a mountain biker for almost 5 years, i must assume that the book is beginner's oriented.

    Editorial Review:

Master the techniques of America's greatest rider.* Glide over rocks, logs, and ledges* Attack steep climbs and rapid descents* Carve through curves and turns* Train smart, then ride to winImprove your performance with these tips, techniques, and off-road tales from mountain biking legend Ned Overend."At the 1990 world championships in Durango, Colorado, Thomas Frischknecht and I were locked in a dogfight.... At the start of the fourth and final lap was a pitch of rocky, loose trail that went straight up the face of a ski run.... My Swiss rival had been dismounting and running this climb while I stayed on my bike. On previous laps, I'd opened a little gap, so I knew this would be my chance. I attacked when Thomas got off again. He never caught me.... To ride that steep trail, I had to use five climbing techniques. There's no reason why you can't make them part of your arsenal, too."

    Editorial Review:

"After forty years of study on the subject, I can with some confidence say Bill and Carol McGann’s The Story of the Tour de France is the finest such work ever produced in the English language, and perhaps in any."
-From the preface by Owen Mulholland, author of Uphill Battle

"Besides towering over all bicycle races, the Tour de France endures for its unique Gaulic character, like Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. The McGann's passionate and insightful writing evokes the raucous cast of riders, promoters, and journalists thrusting through highs and lows worthy of opera. This volume stands out as a must-read book for anyone seeking to appreciate cycling's race of races."
-Peter Joffre Nye, author of The Six-Day Bicycle Races: America's Jazz Age Sport and Hearts of Lions

"There are LOTS of books on the Tour de France. An increasing number of them are actually written in English. However, of those, none educates Americans about this grand spectacle’s rich past. The Tour de France has a history as fascinating and sordid as Rome’s and it is high time someone undertook to explain this to our American sensibility. Our guide for the trip is a man with a ravenous appetite for both world history and bicycle racing, just the sort of person to paint a Tour champion with the dramatic grandiosity befitting Hannibal himself."
    -Pat Brady, Editor, Asphalt Magazine

At the dawn of the 20th Century, French newspapers used bicycle races as promotions to build readership. Until 1903 these were one-day events. Looking to deliver a coup de grace in a vicious circulation war, Henri Desgrange—editor of the Parisian sports magazine L’Auto—took the suggestion of one of his writers to organize a race that would last several days longer than anything else, like the 6-day races on the track, but on the road.

That’s exactly what happened. For almost 3 weeks the riders in the first Tour de France rode over dirt roads and cobblestones in a grand circumnavigation of France. The race was an electrifying success. Held annually (suspended only during the 2 World Wars), the Tour grew longer and more complex with an ever-changing set of rules, as Desgrange kept tinkering with the Tour, looking for the perfect formula for his race.

Each year a new cast of riders would assemble to contest what has now become the greatest sporting event in the world.

I purchased this as a gift for someone who completed the ironman this year.
She loved it so I think that says it all!
The pictures are beautiful (its a little smaller than I thought it would be - 10x10 I believe)
Thats actually a PLUS. I had thought it would be one of those huge unbookshelfable books (yes I just made that word up!)

A great book for new cyclists 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for those just starting to cycle or for those who wish they had a little more knowledge about the basics. Dr. Peveler begins with the bike its components and fitting. Next he illustrates the various types and designs and what it means for the rider. I have never seen a cycling book help the rider with this very important aspect of cycling. More over, there is helpful information on the body and different kinds of trainings - leg speed, strength/hills, endurance. Very readable with sound advice. A large part of the book is devoted to riding skills and communication. So for those who have ever wondered what they should be doing in a group ride look no further, this book will help answer those questions. And what is more Dr. Peveler demonstrates various exercises that will strengthen the rider and increase endurance. I've been telling my training partners about this book, maybe I shouldn't, so I can surprise them with my new skills!

Best of the genre 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I've read a fair number of cycling oddessy books because I like the topic. Admittedly, within this genre, it can be rare to find a book that is well written, and even rarer to find one with a compelling narrative. However, this gem scores well on both accounts. The author has a lot of material to draw from, as he describes a 7 year adventure around the globe that takes him to some pretty rough but exciting places. More importantly, the events the author faces have a deep impact on him. He conveys this with thoughtfulness and intelligence, but the text is never preachy. This book does offer a unique and honest perspective on world travel however. The events described really stuck with me after I had turned the last page, and I was sad to see the adventure end. For me, "Odysseus' Last Stand : The Chronicles of a Bicycle Nomad," represents the best of the genre. For a more humorous collection of cycle travel anecdotes, Kurmaskie's Metal Cowboy is quite good.

    Editorial Review:

Comprised largely of the detailed journals kept throughout his travels, this narrative of a bicyclist's seven-year, 40,000 kilometer odyssey around the world documents the richness of the planet's sights, sounds, and teeming life as experienced from the saddle of a bicycle. During his journey, the author experiences firsthand the effect of international politics on media-invisible cultures while mingling with an endless array of unusual and wonderful characters. As he immerses himself in the culture of every country he visits, learning the languages and customs as he travels, he witnesses the clash of values between developed and developing worlds and the inherent tensions between tradition and progress. Throughout, he comes to a deep understanding of the role that the bicycle plays not only in his life but also in the lives of the world's citizens.

    Editorial Review:

For eight years, the Tour de France, arguably the world’s most demanding athletic competition, was ruled by two men: Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis. On the surface, they were feature players in one of the great sporting stories of the age–American riders overcoming tremendous odds to dominate a sport that held little previous interest for their countrymen. But is this a true story, or is there a darker version of the truth, one that sadly reflects the realities of sports in the twenty-first century? Landis’s title is now in jeopardy because drug tests revealing that his testosterone levels were eleven times those of a normal athlete strongly suggest that he used banned substances, and for years similar allegations have swirled around Armstrong.

Now internationally acclaimed award-winning journalist David Walsh gives an explosive account of the shadow side of professional sports. In this electrifying, controversial, and scrupulously documented exposé, Walsh explores the many facets of the cyclist doping scandals in the United States and abroad. He examines how performance-enhancing drugs can infiltrate a premier sports event–and why athletes succumb to the pressure to use them. In researching this book, Walsh conducted hundreds of hours of interviews with key figures in international cycling, doctors, and other insiders, including Emma O’Reilly, Armstrong’s longtime massage therapist; former U.S. Postal Service cycling team doctor Prentice Steffen; cycling legend Greg LeMond; and former teammates of both Landis and Armstrong.

Central to the story is Lance Armstrong’s relentless, all-consuming drive to be the best. Also essential to this narrative is Floyd Landis, the unassuming, sympathetic hero who was the first winner of the Tour de France after Lance–and the first ever to face the threat of having his title revoked. More than anything else, this book will ignite anew the debate about whether there is room in the current sports culture for athletes who compete honestly, whether sports can be saved from a scandal as widespread as this, and what changes will have to be made.

With a compelling narrative and revelations that will stun, enlighten, and haunt readers, David Walsh addresses numerous questions that arise in that crucial space where sports meet the larger American culture.

In The Noblest Invention, the editors of Bicycling magazine have put together a unique history of the bicycle that illustrates, through essays and breathtaking color photographs, why this simple machine has captured the imagination of people of all ages. Although today we often associate the bicycle with ever-more sophisticated technical gear for sport and recreation, here is a chronicle of its invention from its first appearance as a primitive wooden Laufsmachine to its evolution into a lightweight, elegant racing machine. The bicycle is the simplest major machine that we regularly use, yet it's still undergoing constant technical refinement. The Noblest Invention celebrates the unique interaction between man and machine that the bicycle represents. The handsome book chronicles the full range of the bicycle's history, from its practical applications to the lure of the Tour de France and the joy of just getting out on the open road. The Noblest Invention is the definitive book by the most respected name in bicycling publishing. THE
