Editorial Review:

In a life-and-death situation of being sword-tip to sword-tip with the enemy, where should the swordsman put his mind?
This is the first question posed in the first of three essays written by a Zen master for the guidance of samurai swordsmen. Among the other questions that arise are the difference between the right mind and the confused mind, what makes life precious, the nature of right-mindedness, the Buddhist paradigm of form and consciousness, and what distinguishes the True Mind. So succinct are the author's insights that these writings have outlasted the dissolution of the samurai class to come down to the present as sources of guidance and inspiration for captains of business and industry, as well as those devoted to the practice of the martial arts in their modern forms.
The history of the sword in Japan goes back to antiquity. Zen and its meditative practices also have a long history, but it was not until the rule of the Tokugawa shoguns, beginning in the early 1600s, that the techniques of swordsmanship fused with the spirit of Zen. And if one man can be said to have been the prime mover in this phenomenon, it was none other than Takuan Soho, confidant and religious instructor to an emperor, to a great sword master, and to the heads of the most important sword schools of the time.
Takuan's meditations on the sword in the essays presented here are classics of Zen thinking.

An excellent treatment of a timeless topic. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is very useful in dealing with the bully in the school. This is truly a life and death issue. It's application however goes beyond the the schools. It is always applies to the work place, business, the church, the internet, the funeral arrangement conference, national politics, and international relations. Chapter seven "Is there a bullied kid in the house applies" to all these environments.

She points out that the roots of bullying are in the home. Chapter Five is excellent in revealing three types of families and how it relates to bullying. She is particularly bold in describing sexual bullying and it's
relationship to sexual harassment. Her treatment of telling and tattling can be applied not just to the schoolyard, but to any type of whistle blowing. Five stars! Excellent job on a timeless subject.

Editorial Review:

Bestselling parenting educator Barbara Coloroso draws on her decades of work with youth, parents, and teachers to debunk the misconceptions and explain what we can do to stop bullying. She explains how to read the subtle "cues and clues" that a child is being bullied; discipline rather than punish the bully; and formulate constructive school and community policies. Readers will learn: - The three kinds of bullying, and seven steps to take if you child is a bully - Four abilities that protect your child from a bully - How to help bystanders speak out and stand up for their peers - Why teaching a "code of compassion" is more effective against bullying than conflict resolution techniques - Important insights on the dangers of cliques, hazing, taunting and sexual bullying - Why zero tolerance policies can equal zero thinking...and more

As an amateur contortionist I thought I knew everything about stretching, but I borrowed a friend's copy of Stretching Scientifically and my ego took a blow because I had never even heard of isometric stretching. Once I started applying it I instantly gained more flexibility. East bloc training wins again. I am so glad I came across this book.

Self-advertisement 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

When purchasing this book/dvd combination, I was hoping to get an introduction to Tai Chi that I could practically evaluate and practice. Instead, what I received was a poorly veiled advertisement for the author's 4 DVD set of instructional videos.

While the book does contain certain valuable facts about Tai Chi (history, etc), this is not something that you can pick up and begin doing Tai Chi exercises within an hour. The DVD on the other hand is almost completely useless and while advertising the full length 4 DVD set - looks as if it were filmed in the author's living room with long curtains hiding his sofa.

I would not recommend this product. Two stars b/c the book isn't all that bad - but is not a practical application of Tai Chi - and that may have been my mistake.

In Your Face 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For the majority of fighting arts practitioners whose experience is limited to the dojo or tournament floor Roy Miller's book may strike an offensive tone. Miller, however, is not attempting to validate which style is the most street effective; rather he details the effects of predatory violence on unsuspecting persons, particularly those in the martial arts world.
As a veteran corrections officer, Miller writes from personal experience and explains why unrealistic belief systems, overemphasis on tournament and MMA, tradition before effective technique and naive mindsets sets can add up to disaster for those who have never experienced violence firsthand. His assessments are frank, but honest. His style of writing is easy to follow and the knowledge he imparts is real, not theory.
If you're interested in a quick and easy guide to self defense this book isn't for you. However, if you're looking for a realistic appraisal of what a fighting arts practitioner needs to prepare for in real world situations, then buy Meditations on Violence.

Michael Rosenbaum

Author: Kata and the Transmission of Knowledge in Traditional Martial Arts.

Editorial Review:

Veteran correction officer Sergeant Rory Miller distills what he has learned from jail house brawls, tactical operations and ambushes to explore the differences between martial arts and the subject martial arts were designed to deal with: Violence. Miller explores the complexity of violence, critical thinking, and the mind of the predator. He offers martial arts training guidance and resources, discusses how to overcome personal fears, and how to deal with the aftermath of violent encounters.

Zen in the Martial Arts--a tribute to exaggeration of benefits 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a fine book. The problem for me in it deals with the subject more than the treatment. Martial arts, and the Zen attitude toward it, presents exaggerated benefits. One doubts that it produces personal superpowers. That seems a myth. It reminds me of what Hirohito's wife said after World War II, which was that the nation should have paid more attention to science and less to spirit. That is, they assumed that simply through zen discipline, they could overpower all the nations of the Pacific, as well as the United States. It didn't work that way. Similarly, with all the benefits that Zen may confer on the martial artist, it may not amount to a complete transformation of experience, as the author seems to propose. Still, it is a good book and well worth reading.

Editorial Review:

"A man who has attained mastery of an art reveals it in his every action."--Samurai Maximum.

Under the guidance of such celebrated masters as Ed Parker and the immortal Bruce Lee, Joe Hyams vividly recounts his more than 25 years of experience in the martial arts. In his illuminating story, Hyams reveals to you how the daily application of Zen principles not only developed his physical expertise but gave him the mental discipline to control his personal problems-self-image, work pressure, competition. Indeed, mastering the spiritual goals in martial arts can dramatically alter the quality of your life-enriching your relationships with people, as well as helping you make use of all your abilities.

This is a book about Computer Hacking 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a masterfully written book about computer hacking - wireless hacking, ARP spoofing, malformed packets, protocol violations, Back Orifice, man in the middle, bluetooth, radio, etc.

These reviews, while a valiant cover-up effort, are completely absurd. Nice try, doodz.

This is a hacking masterpiece. Every security professional should read this. Fortunately for the dark side - they won't.

Dear Stupid Idiots,

A lot of you have been saying that I don’t know anything about REAL ninjas. But that’s a bunch of bull crap! You dummies don’t know anything. And maybe YOU should get a life. I bet a lot of you have never even seen a girl naked! You idiots believe that ninjas had some "code of honor." Yeah right! If by "code of honor," you mean "code to flip out and go nuts for absolutely no reason at all even if it means that people might think you are totally insane or sweet," then you are right. But if you mean a "code to be nice and speak nicely while sharing and not cutting off heads," then you’re the biggest idiot ever!!!!!! So if you have any brains, you will shut up and get a life. So go shut up, you stupid idiot.

No thank you,

Bushido or Hagakure??? 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Hagakure: The Way of the SamuraiBushido: The Soul of Japan (Dodo Press)

This book (Bushido: The Way of the Samurai) really needs to have a different title. At first glance I thought it was the classic Bushido, especially as it is the first book to pop up when one searches Bushido on Amazon. This book is NOT the classic Bushido; it is a translation of the Hagakure.

The Japanese martial philosophy book, Hagakure: The Way of the Samurai, by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, is NOT the same book as the equally classic Japanese martial philosophy book, Bushido: The Soul of Japan, by Inazo Nitobé. Indeed, Bushido was written nearly 200 years after Hagakure.

Just a heads up for anyone that is looking for the real Bushido.

Editorial Review:

In eighteenth-century Japan, Tsunetomo Yamamoto created the Hagakure, a document that served as the basis for samurai warrior behavior. Its guiding principles greatly influenced the Japanese ruling class and shaped the underlying character of the Japanese psyche, from businessmen to soldiers.

Bushido is the first English translation of the Hagakure. This work provides a powerful message aimed at the mind and spirit of the samurai warrior. It offers beliefs that are difficult for the Western mind to embrace, yet fascinating in their pursuit of absolute service. With Bushido, one can better put into perspective Japan’s historical path and gain greater insight into the Japan of today.

Editorial Review:

In 1999, after a series of wildly adventurous jobs around the world, Sam Sheridan found himself in Australia, loaded with cash and intent on not working until he’d spent it all. It occurred to him that, without distractions, he could finally indulge a long-dormant obsession:  fighting. Within a year, he was in Bangkok training with the greatest fighter in muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) history and stepping through the ropes for a professional bout. That one fight wasn’t enough. Sheridan set out to test himself on an epic journey into how and why we fight, facing Olympic boxers, Brazilian jiu-jitsu stars, and Ultimate Fighting champions. Along the way, Sheridan delivers an insightful look at violence as a career and a spectator sport, a behind-the-pageantry glimpse of athletes at the top of their terrifying game.  An extraordinary combination of gonzo journalism and participatory sports writing, A Fighter’s Heart is a dizzying first-hand account of what it’s like to reach the peak of finely disciplined personal aggression, to hit—and be hit.
