Editorial Review:

Scores of American women are leading double lives. By day they are librarians, financial analysts, bartenders, teachers, and even mothers; by night their athletic alter egos assume their authority with monikers such as Helen Wheels, Dirty Britches, Anna Mosity, and Assaultin' Pepa. They lace up their skates, slide into racy racing uniforms, and adorn a full set of protective gear. One of America's greatest sports is back-roller derby.

In Roller Derby, readers will encounter roller derby in its various incarnations, from the original Depression-era games through the days of Roller Jam to its current revival.

What started as a dance-a-thon-style test of endurance has evolved into a unique sport that exemplifies point-scoring, body-checking, speed, blood, punches, and miles and miles of personality and style. Punctuated throughout the book are derby vignettes: stories from old-school and new-school girls, the process of selecting a derby name and style, the artistic element to logos and uniforms, so-gruesome-you-just-have-to-look injuries, what's legal during a bout and-more importantly-what's not, and much more.

Encircling the story of roller derby are vintage promo paraphernalia and histori-cal photographs, as well as stunning, full-color and black-and-white, modern-day shots of the women, the bouts, and the sport.

Great book of novice and elite skaters 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for anyone involved in in-line or ice speedskating. Being a speedskater myself, I have had much success using the book. It is great for novice and elite skaters. The book offers a lot of information regarding techinique and training. I hope others have or will have as much success using this book as I have.

A MUST-HAVE FOR ANY SPEEDSKATERS LIBRARY!!!

Inline Speed Skating 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

From the background I had during my competitive years in the sport of inline speedskating, I believe the book is a complete and technical guide to the basic terminology, strategy, and mechanics that are involved with speedskating; both on ice and inline skates. There is heavy usage on photographs to show you the correct way to skate to reach your potential but to achieve what is seen in the picture typically takes years of training with coaches to show you the ways to train your body to achieve the form and stride of an effecient inline skater.

I also believe that some of the material is dated regarding the current face of the sport but the book is a staple in the sport and is a worthy look for outsiders and internally at the facets of the sport of inline and ice speedskating. For anyone interested in speedskating either on ice skates or inline skates, this book is the most comprehensive guide from a champion speedskater that covers most facets of the sport.

Editorial Review:

Containing instruction and drills to learn and master basic to advanced techniques, this text covers every speedskating discipline for in-line and ice. Readers should learn the mechanics of efficient skating technique, the training methods that lead to optimal performance, and racing tactics.

This book is a very drill-orientated book. 3 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Overall, I was diappointed with this book. The
main focus was on drills and I wasn't aware
of it. The drills in it are great. They have
many drills for each individual skill.
However, the text wasn't that good. It seems
like it was written from an ice hockey
player's view point. There was little
consideration for the difference between
roller and ice hockey.

it is a great learning book for new players 5 out of 5 stars.

This book in my opinion is very helpful to first time players and people who are learning about the game. It has pratice techniques and different drills for all positions of the game which I find to be helpful. A book for skating success 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"Coaches Manual: Choreography and Style for skaters", has given me new found inspiration and the desire to push myself as well as my skaters to produce fresh and edgy choreography. Dr. Harris's Manual gives the new coach the tools with which to create and the veteran coach the ability to reinvent him or herself as an artist.
My skaters and I have worked with the concepts of Dr. Harris' first book for over 10 years. During this time we have consistently grown as artists, which has proven to be a great advantage in the competitive arena. Dr. Harris' work has made a magical impression on my life. I can only imagine what she will create next!"

Figure skating gets the respect it deserves 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 30 people found this review helpful.

_Culture on Ice_ is the first skating book I have bought in more than two years. It is also the first skating book where I actually learned something in every chapter and started to think about skating in ways that hadn't occurred to me.

Even though it's an "academic" book, its contents and message appeal to skating fans universally. The first two chapters are heavy on theory and may present some difficulty for those unfamiliar with academic theories of meaning, but they're worth sloughing through. (I think you could even get away with skipping them if you really can't get through the language.) Chapter three onward should be relatively smooth sailing for any confirmed skating fan with the caveats that the language is academic and the sentences are long.

The research is meticulous, and the chapter notes are full of exciting hidden gems of amazing detail. The technical appendix and suggestions for further reading alone would be worth the cover price for anyone looking to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the sport.

_Culture on Ice_ is successful as a work of theory, a work of history, and an appreciation of all who contribute to figure skating. Kudos to Ellyn Kestnbaum for taking figure skating beyond coffee-table-book status and establishing a framework for future critical analysis of the sport.

Editorial Review:

Figure skating is one of the most popular spectator sports in the U.S., yet it eludes definitive categorization. In this engaging new book, Ellyn Kestnbaum examines figure skating from multiple perspectives: as sport, as performance, and even as spectacle, guiding the reader through both the technical aspects of skating and the sometimes convoluted rules of figure skating competition. By careful readings of skating events at the 1994 and 1998 Olympic Games, she argues that figure skating is a language, one whose meaning is inflected by the culture at large. In particular, she looks at the ways in which race, social class and gender all disrupt, subvert or reinforce the practices of figure skating, and examines the influence of the media in shaping perceptions of the sport. As a skater, skating fan and scholar, Kestnbaum brings a unique point of view to this study, providing not only a history of the skating world but also a feeling for what it is like to be on the ice.

Editorial Review:

The 1950s phenomenon of Roller Derby is back in full force, and it's definitely not your grandma's game anymore. With leagues in more than one hundred cities across the country, a national tournament, and major sponsors, the new wave of the sport has gone mainstream. No one is better qualified to tell the story of Flat Track Derby's astronomic rise than Melissa "Melicious" Joulwan. As a founding member of the Texas Rollergirls -- the league that launched the sport and the reigning national champions -- she has helped redefine what it means to be stylish, sporty, and sexy.

With her mouthy, tough-as-nails style, Melicious recounts her best tales from the track: her fierce rivalries with The Wrench and Ivanna S. Pankin, the scene at the annual national tournament, the thrill of a bout, and the infractions that so often bring her to the penalty box. From the minute she first laced up her skates and wrapped herself in her alter ego, Roller Derby has given her a confidence boost, and she shares the positive impact the sport has also had on girls -- young and not-so-young -- who tack posters of her on their bedroom walls and lace up their own skates.

Complete with photos and suggestions on how to develop a Rollergirl name and persona, this unprecedented tell-all comes from the woman who's watched the sport evolve from an underground Friday-night event to a bona fide national phenomenon.
