Read his original sources instead 3 out of 5 stars.

This is the Wal-Mart of Triathlon training guides. There is a representative in every department of training, but it does not contain enough of the depth of knowledge and detail that you would like from a "Bible" to be truly satisfying. Throughout the book you will find diluted versions of other works and training books/products (Pose Method, Total Immersion, Paleo Diet, etc). I've found that reading the original sources is much more satisfying for that craving of knowledge. If you are really looking to gain in depth knowledge about the skills, training, and diet necessary for triathlon I would recommend reading the following books as either a supplement or replacement for this book:

1. Dr. Nichloas Romanov's Pose Method of Running (and DVD)
2. Daniel's Running Formula
3. Triathlon Swimming Made Easy: The Total Immersion Way for Anyone
to Master Open-Water Swimming
4. Easy Freestyle DVD (also by Total Immersion)
5. Bicycling Magazine's Complete Book of Road Cycling Skills
6. The Paleo Diet

Editorial Review:

This new edition of The Triathlete's Training Bible covers all of the specialized training needs of triathletes, including completely updated nutrition, recovery, and weight training information. The book also contains seasoned advice on the mental aspects of training. Author Joe Friel shows how to achieve greater fitness by examining personal strengths and weaknesses, and devotes individual chapters to planning, racing, rest, and recovery. Appendices include annual training plan worksheets and suggested swim, bike, run, and combined workouts.

Editorial Review:

Most traditional weight lifting programs are too general to benefit triathletes. This illustrated guide offers 60 exercises that build strength for swimming, biking, and running by replicating the muscle usage patterns specific to triathlon events. The exercises are organized by sport and muscle group, allowing triathletes to quickly find the best exercise for their unique training needs. Included are sample seasonal plans for each race distance, along with instructions on adapting training plans to individual needs that make it easy to develop a personal strength training program.

Solid advice, not too technical 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book for triathletes of all levels. Gale is both a gifted athlete and a talented writer. She presents the facts without getting overly complicated or high tech. She acknowledges the need for super effective time management without "dumbing down". I have been a fan of Gale's for many years due to her column in Triathlon Life magazine. This book expands on some of the concepts in her column and spells out succinctly how you can make your own plans happen.

She comes across as approachable without talking down. Yet Gale is one of the most accomplished coaches in the country, currently getting Team USA ready for Beijing. All that said, I do believe this book is best utilized by beginners....Still, it is a wonderful resource for the tri community - grab it and use it! And, enjoy.

Editorial Review:

Gale Bernhardt's training plans have helped tens of thousands of self-coached athletes reach their multisport goals. Every detail of how to train for a triathlon of any distance, an off-road triathlon, or a duathlon is here, including plenty of swim, bike, and run workouts to keep training fresh and breakthrough workouts to make training more rewarding. Bernhardt’s proven methods are the basis for each of the book’s 15 unique training plans, removing the hassle of creating a plan from scratch. This second edition includes easy tips on modifications that allow triathletes to further personalize the plans; a new chapter on 13 Weeks to a Sub-13 Hour Ironman; eight training plans requiring only five to ten hours of training per week; and five training plans to go farther. This book has a challenge to suit everyone, from beginners to accomplished triathletes, for those short on training time and those who are training for a faster time.

Great Book !! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The problem when you start training for a long endurance event like the Ironman is that every second athlete has his or her own opinion and way of training. This confused me a lot.

I decided to seek some professional help and use this book to train for my first Ironman and I can honestly say this book is remarkable. The level of detail is intense, so you have to be patient and read some sections several times to really grasp and remember all the advice given in the chapters, i.e. nutrition, discipline-specific training techniques, etc.

You also need to apply the knowledge with some common sense, because it has been written with advice for every athlete from novice to elite. So make sure you know where you fall on the scale and what you want to achieve and use the advice that is applicable to you.

But, in general, I found the training principles in this book to be accurate and now that I have completed an Ironman I can say that they work. Lately I have discovered that many of the Ironman athletes I meet also used this book to train from.

So you can buy and use it with confidence. Good luck!

Triathlon Swimming Made Easy 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I think I could have went without this book. The whole book could have been condensed to just a few pages. No great images to help you learn the total immersion way. I definitely feel that the original Total Immersion book is infinitely better BUT the video is the most informative. I find myself watching that video over and over. A picture is worth a thousand words... Dont misunderstand me, Total Immersion Rocks! I have only been swimming for a year ( I am 45) and I can bang out a mile or more no problem in about 30 minutes.

A better swim 5 out of 5 stars.

I feel like after reading this book I have looked at my swim training in a whole new light. Gone are the days of grinding out lap after lap after lap in hope that I will magically improve my swim leg. Total Immersion has tuned me into developing and practicing good swim habits.

This book works best when purchasing the DVD. It helps to view the training exercises. The video is a little dated but not that bad too watch.

Editorial Review:

A clear, practical guide to swimming freestyle better than you ever thought possible. Not only to swim well enough to breeze through a triathlon swim leg with ease and confidence; but to reach a Nirvana where the swim is your favorite part. If you're not aiming to do a triathlon, but would simply like to swim with ease, efficiency and confidence, TSME will turn you into a beautiful freestyler with the freedom to swim in any body of water.

Helpful and convenient 5 out of 5 stars.

The workouts in this book are very helpful (especially if you have any other books by Gale, these workouts fit right into her training plans). I especially love how waterproof the book is and that it easily props up by itself. This makes it very convenient to prop it up and the end of the lane, and just go!

Enjoyable workouts 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has saved me from the monotony of swimming laps. Having "something to do" while at the pool has given me extra motivation and feelings of success. The workouts are just the right length (I can choose the shorter versions if I need to finish in under an hour). I swim in the pool to train for open water triathlons and this book does more than prepare me to get me there. I use it 2-3 times a week. It is WELL worth having!

I found this book very good. I first got it from the Library and then decided it was a book I wanted on my shelf. It covers all the bases for learning about, training for and performing in Triathlons. It is very up to date and very practical in it's approach. I am a novice and this book has made me feel quite competent in how to approach, prepare for and perform in triathlons. It is chock full of information and I highly recommend it if you're at all serious about improving your performance.

Great for plan ideas, not a lot of explanation (I'd rate it a 3.5) 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for more access to training plans. The variety of plans and number of different fitness levels it offers is great. The key in it is great and fairly user friendly. I found that the plan I chose based on my "fitness level" according to the book seems a little ambitious so I found myself editing a lot of the plan. Also, some of the training plans require knowing where a 5-6% grade hill is that takes at least 1 min to bike up. I don't really know where one is and so that makes some of the workouts unable to do or extremely limiting. I also find some of the swimming workouts get to be very redundant, just adding on one extra hundred yards to the same workout every week. More importantly, I feel that for a beginner swimmer, these workouts require a lot of yardage and perhaps pushing too hard, too soon. I have been a competitive swimmer for 14 years so I can tune these practices to the ability of the swimmer, but if my boyfriend would've picked up the book and tried to do some of these workouts I think he might injure himself (shoulders). Overall, great book to get ideas, but some of the workouts are a little difficult to make it easy to fit into your schedule and location.
