my favorite log 4 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I'm in my 4th season of triathlon (go SeaTri!) about to do my first marathon. I've tried other logs with more boxes to fill in but they're too customized to someone else, I like that this is a pretty unstructured format. I tried making my own but I made it 8.5x11 and it was too unweildy, so I've come back to this log again and I actually use it. I like the week totals, it's very satisfying to see my marathon training milage ramp up. In the review section I put reminders like gear I need to replace or drinks that did or didn't work for me. I follow their recommendation of drawing a diagonal line across days I didn't work out and it gives a good quick sense of whether or not I'm slacking. My biggest drawback is I have messy handwriting (keyboard junkie ;-) so I have trouble staying between the small lines. I could go digital, but I like that this can kick around in my closet by my gear.

Good for beginners 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book had lots of good starter information. It gave me a good foundation to really start planning for my first triathlon. The training routines were well divided into fitness levels. This is a good starter book to build a knowledge base on.

Disappointing training plans 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The training plans in this book for "fit" (there are two sets of plans for each distance: "fit" vs. "unfit") are way too conservative. I found myself using the Olympic distance plan to train for a Sprint distance triathlon. There is no way following the "fit" Olympic distance plan I could have completed that distance. It's suitable for training for a Sprint however but that's not what is intended by the author.

I also find it annoying that so much of the book is dedicated to these different flavors for both individuals and for teams. It began to feel like me that the author was padding the book to make it longer.

Since most folks (like me) would buy a beginner book for the training plans I cannot recommend this book to a beginner to formulate a plan unless you feel like under-training and slogging through your first event.

Editorial Review:

Triathlon Training Basics contains all the information that new triathletes need in order to successfully complete a sprint or an Olympic distance triathlon. Written by Gale Bernhardt, Triathlete columnist, member of the USA Triathlon 2004 Olympic Team Selection Committee, and certified Elite Level Triathlon and Cycling Coach trainer, the book contains detailed training plans that are tailored to different levels of fitness in each of the swim, bike, and run categories. Strength training and stretching portions are included to illustrate proper form and the last chapter deals with injury prevention and treatment.

Belongs on the coffee table... 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The best *looking*, but far from best, book I've found on triathlons. Its heavy, glossy pages with full-color photos make it very appealing on the surface, but sadly it lacks any depth. It offers cursory explanations of various aspects of the sport, and sprinkles in a little bit of good advice here and there, but that's about it as far as content goes. It fails to include some crucial aspects of training - such as weight training - completely!

In the end, this book is ultimately better suited for your coffee table than your bookshelf. Complete newcomers to triathlons may get a little out of it, but I think anyone seriously interested in the sport would be better off reading The Triathlete's Training Bible by Joe Friel.

Editorial Review:

Make sure your next race is your best with the programs in Triathlon Training. Choose from six race specific programs: two for sprint distances, two for Olympic distances, one for the half Ironman, and one for the Ironman. The sprint and Olympic programs include target race times, so you can choose the program best suited to your training and ability level.

Technique instruction and training drills for the swim, bike, and run will shave time off each phase of your performance. Recommendations for equipment, nutrition, and supplements give you the support for training and performing at the highest level. And, because injuries are prevalent in the sport, Triathlon Training advises how to prevent the most common triathlon injuries and prescribes treatment and recovery measures for various injuries.

Developed in consultation with USA Triathlon and the British Triathlon Association, Triathlon Training will improve your performance and enjoyment in the sport.

Better books out there 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

In much of this book, there is a very strong emphasis on exactly what worked for Dave Scott. This wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, and in some cases isn't, but I find it more helpful to hear the coach's perspective as opposed to the athelete's perspective. The reason why this is important is because a coach will very often know the difficulties that wide ranges of people face during triathlon training while the athelete really only has to deal with his own challenges. The other thing to note is that the information is a little dated.

It did cover a lot of territory though... There are also some good gems that I found as well as an underlying emphasis: 'your training should as accurately as possible reflect your race'.

(My rating should be 3.5)

Dave Scott's Book has it ALL.... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

When I first decided to start training for the Half-Ironman, I browsed through Amazon and ordered about 10 different books. This is absolutely one of my favorites.

Dave Scott has won 6 Ironman World Championships since winning one of the earliest Ironmans in 1980. Yet surprisingly, he is quite gracious about his wins.

"Triathlon Training" has individual chapters on swimming, cycling, and running techniques uniquely suited for the triathlete. It offers a year-round training program and workout schedules for 3, 4, 5, and 6-day training weeks with the most effective intensity, speed, and duration for each workout.

It covers nutrition and specific tips to get ready mentally for the race, preparing for transitions, and pacing yourself throughout the race.

Frankly, my goal is simply to finish the race. Regardless of my time, Dave Scott's techniques have already helped to prepare me for Hawaii. His attitude and motivation helps prepare you for Life 101 as well.

Transformed by Triathlon: The Making of an Improbable Athlete 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. Jane Booth is incredibly inspirational. She gives us a very personal and entertaining view of her journey from ordinary to extraordinary! I enjoyed Jane's comical and insightful description of herself as a true novice transformed into an experienced athlete. She has a way of bringing you along for the ride. Her descriptions of the San Francisco Bay Area were amazing, too.

Great! 4 out of 5 stars.

I thought this book was great, I couldn't put it down until I was finished. She tells her story of her start with triathlon from the beginning, it was informative, it will make you laugh out loud, if you do triathlon it will make you remember your start and if you thought you could never do something like triathlon she just might help you decide different!

Editorial Review:

Follow Jane Booth's humorous, honest and surprising journey from a woman who couldn't tell the front from the rear of her bike helmet to an athlete capable of competing in an Olympic-distance triathlon. Celebrate her every victory, from a skirmish with a wayward wetsuit to conquering her fear of falling off her bike. Race alongside her as she battles to finish a race that lies at the outermost edge of her abilities. And share Jane's unexpected discovery of how endurance sport changed her attitudes, her aspirations and her whole approach to life.

Intro to triathlon review 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was an interesting account of one age grouper's entry into the sport of triathlon. I have many, many books about triathlon and training on my bookshelves but this was a nice break from the purely technical how to do its. It shares many interesting anecdotes good and bad that many of us have experienced. Entertaining reading.

Puts You At Ease 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Reading Roman Mica's book makes one feel at ease. He writes humbly about the experiences he's had and silly mistakes he's made, and he writes it in a way that keeps your attention. This will put anyone at ease who worries that they "can't" do a triathlon, or worries about not being athletic enough to compete in amateur athletics.

Pretty Good 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a good account of a "clydesdale" attempting to compete with those skinny little runts who seem to feel we are invading in their sport. It is an excellent lesson in how to not take life too seriously no matter what you do. It's a good read.

Editorial Review:

My Training Starts Tomorrow: The Everyman's Guide to Ironfit Swimming, Cycling, & Running is a guide for the everyday triathlete. Offered on its pages are vignettes and advice derived from the author's experience as a Clydesdale triathlete.
