Between men and women there is no friendship possible. There is passion, enmity, worship, love, but no friendship.-Oscar Wilde 5 out of 5 stars.

After losing her husband to a stock car accident two years ago, Tamara Riggs is a single mother and widow at the age of 32. She is just getting back into the dating scene when she meets a young rookie driver, Elec. Not really wanting to get involved with another race car driver, Tamara is convinced that keeping it light and casual is the only way to go, unfortunately that gets harder and harder to do.

I loved this book and I think it is going to be an awesome series. Erin McCarthy cracks me up and she had me laughing out loud throughout this book. Tamara's friend Suzanne was a laugh riot and her outspoken and blunt ways quickly won me over. Erin McCarthy books are always extremely fun, humorous and a whole lot sexy. This one was no exception; I loved it from start to finish.

Mixed in with all the sizzle and humor is a lot of emotion and depth. Tamara has a lot of reservations about herself and dating after all these years and is concerned about doing what's best for her kids. I adored Elic from the start; he has a lot of heart and was a hell of a good guy. It's great to read about a hero that can be sexy as hell, genuinely decent, and incredibly exciting. I can't wait to read the next one and look forward to more stories about this group of characters!

Hard and Fast

Editorial Review:

When Mickey Thompson and his wife Trudy were assassinated in their driveway in the pre-dawn hours of March 16, 1988, the salacious details of the crime and the years of legal wrangling that followed made for hundreds of splashy headlines and sexy television soundbytes.

After all, the story had it all . . . unknown hooded gunmen riding into a gated Southern California community on bicycles, ambushing their victims and brutally ending their lives while neighbors ate breakfast and read the morning paper.

Leaving behind more than $70,000 in jewelry, the killing was an obvious “hit,” and those close to Mickey and Trudy immediately pointed to Mickey’s hot-headed former business partner Michael Goodwin as the mastermind behind the tragedy. Nearly 20 years later, Goodwin was found guilty by a Pasadena Superior Court jury in 2006 of two counts of first-degree murder. The actual gunmen were never identified or apprehended.

John Walsh and America’s Most Wanted did multiple episodes leading up to the conviction. Robert Stack featured the murders on Unsolved Mysteries. CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery got in the act. Everyone wanted a piece of the story.

A good story, however, has much more than a powerful ending.

Who was Mickey Thompson? What made him more than just another victim of violent crime in America? This is what Mickey Thompson: The Fast Life and Mysterious Death of a Racing Legend explores.

Mickey was one of the most influential figures in early American motorsports. While he did have loyal and longtime friends, Mickey always did things one way . . . his way. And he did it with speed . . . he did everything with speed.

From his 1950s adventures in the Carrera Panamericana, ending with five dead and dramatic pictures in Life Magazine in 1953, through making a one-way run of 406.60 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1960 in his famed Challenger, through multiple trend-setting entries in the famed Indianapolis 500 and into the creation of some of the most popular off-road racing series and motor sportsstadium shows, Mickey’s life was full of “firsts.”

And in a world that seems to be moving faster than even Mickey Thompson could have imagined, the complete story of this true American legend is one worth slowing down for.

Excellent book on the fundamentals and more. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book as part of an ongoing effort to improve my riding, starting with myself. Lee Parks puts the information into an easy-to-understand format, which makes this book accessible to almost any rider. That said, this is NOT a beginner book. I've been riding for 30,000+ miles/4 yrs - an intermediate sport rider. I am good at cornering, and can drag my knees while also riding smoothly/calmly. This book does not cover basic motorcycle riding, and assumes you already have the necessary skills to go from point A to B. It teaches you ways of getting there more efficiently and much faster, and explains suspension setup, line selection, apexes, various types of corners, traction concepts, throttle control, trail braking, track days, even mental/physical fitness. It approaches the reader with the expectation that you are trying to improve your skills in high-intensity street riding (and hopefully) moving onto a track, where you can make better use of the information. Take a local MSF course, get familiarized with your bike, and then read this book.

Editorial Review:

Today's super high-performance bikes are the most potent vehicles ever sold to the public and they demand advanced riding skills. This is the perfect book for riders who want to take their street riding skills to a higher level. Total Control explains the ins and outs of high-performance street riding. Lee Parks, one of the most accomplished riders, racers, authors and instructors in the world, helps riders master the awe-inspiring performance potential of modern motorcycles. This book gives riders everything they need to develop the techniques and survival skills necessary to become a proficient, accomplished, and safer street rider. High quality photos, detailed instructions, and professional diagrams highlight the intricacies and proper techniques of street riding. Readers will come away with a better understanding of everything from braking and cornering to proper throttle control, resulting in a more exciting yet safer ride.

Facinating Journey 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is about Ted Simon's experince of riding around the world. Not only does he write about his actual experinces, but he also writes about how he feels. Some parts of the trip are glossed over in just a paragraph while others take pages and pages. It was very interesting to see hwo he felt the trip changed his life. I would have given the book five stars, but it bogs down in places. This book is more about an adventure around the world than it is about motorcycling. Overall, it is a great story and worth reading.

Good read 4 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book after reading about it in a motorcycle article. I found it to be a pretty good read, although I find it hard to believe someone in the 1970's would choose a triumph motorcycle to do this trip on, knowing their history and reputation during the 70's! I thoroughly enjoyed Ted Simons' writing about his experiences and would recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Simon rode a motorcycle around the world in the seventies, when such a thing was unheard of. In four years he covered 78,000 miles through 45 countries, living with peasants and presidents, in prisons and palaces, through wars and revolutions. What distinguishes this book is that Simon was already an accomplished writer. In 25 years this book has changed many lives, and inspired many to travel, including Ewan McGregor.

very repetative, and not what I thought it would be. 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Read the book over vacation, the info it gives you is great but a lot of it only works if you actually drive a Formula or Sport Racer Vehicle. Lots of info about tracks and courses, how to get the ideal line in an apex, and how to drive smoothly and fast gain control, then it repeats itself again, so this makes an illusion that there are a lot of secrets even though he is just repeating it using different verbiage. This is a great book for advanced racers that understand the concept and terminology of F1 type races and it helps you prepare for a F1 race too but for an average driver trying to learn the ropes this book might be to hard and doesn't help much with everyday driving since a lot of the techniques is for driving above 150mph and plus F1 has totally different suspension systems and steering systems then regular sport cars so if you try it it might feel weird. You learn the heal toe move which I have been trying to get for a while, very detailed and lots of graphs, data charts, and drawings. I personally had to skip some chapters because I was not interested tracks, officials, and what they do with the flags, and some more stuff because a lot of it does not apply to me as I do not own a formula car or race professionally in such a track they described, but I did read about perfect turning and control plus weight transfer and how to keep that center of gravity which helps me in the real world of driving on the streets. I feel that I am going a lot faster in my car by being able to turn safely yet not slowing my car down to much where it would take longer to accelerate plus I have been able to drive fast yet so smooth that my mom fell asleep the whole time as I drove her. So i was really happy with that info. I am a mechanic and I test race clients vehicles at the track, my average speed is 140mph so you know my point of view

Editorial Review:

Shave lap times or find a faster line through your favorite set of S-curves with professional race driver Ross Bentley as he shows you the quickest line from apex to apex! With tips and commentary from current race drivers, Bentley covers the vital techniques of speed, from visualizing lines to interpreting tire temps to put you in front of the pack. Includes discussion of practice techniques, chassis set-up, and working with your pit chief.

Editorial Review:

Every NASCAR fan – at one time or another – asks the same question: Why isn’t my favorite driver winning? This is your chance to discover how much more there is to NASCAR than “Go fast, turn left and don’t crash.” If you’ve ever wondered why racecars don’t have mufflers, how “bump drafting” works, or what in the world “Let’s go up a pound on the right rear and add half a round of wedge” means, The Physics of NASCAR is for you.

In this fast-paced investigation into the adrenaline-pumping world of NASCAR, a physicist with a passion uncovers what happens when the rubber hits the road and 800- horsepower vehicles compete at 190 miles per hour only inches from one another.

Diandra Leslie-Pelecky reveals how and why drivers trust the engineering and science their teams literally build around them not only to get them across the finish line in first place, but also to keep them alive. Professor Leslie-Pelecky is a physicist in love with the sport’s beauty and power and is uniquely qualified to explain exactly how physics translates into winning races.

Based on the author’s extensive access to race shops, pit crews, crew chiefs and mechanics, this book traces the life cycle of a race car from behind the scenes at top race shops to the track. The Physics of NASCAR takes readers right into the ultra competitive world of NASCAR, from the champion driver’s hot seat behind the detachable steering wheel to the New Zealander nicknamed Kiwi in charge of shocks for the No. 19 car.

Diandra Leslie-Pelecky tells her story in terms anyone who drives a car--and maybe occasionally looks under the hood--can understand. How do drivers walk away from serious crashes? How can two cars travel faster together than either car can on its own? How do you dress for a 1800°F gasoline fire? In simple yet detailed, high-octane prose, this is the ultimate thrill ride for armchair speed demons, auto science buffs, and NASCAR fans at every level of interest.

Readers, start your engines.

Nice book for the monster truck lover. Great pictures and information. Fun to look at and you learn a little along the way! My son is 2 1/2 and he loves it!

Great Non-Fiction Easy Readers! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Most easy readers are short basic stories that get old quickly. These little books (Pull Ahead - Mighty Movers series) are different. They are non-fiction learning experiences filled with information little kids, particularly boys, want to know. The topics covered in these books are myriad and they are all well written. They are easy enough for little ones to read, and still provide challenges as they include more technical terms like "tread" and "engine". Certain words are in bold. These are words that are included in the glossary in the back. There is also an index, a fun facts page, and a diagram labeling the various parts.

For being and easy reader, it doesn't get any better than this!

Hmmm 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Now, this is an interesting book...

On one hand, it is packed with very useful information for both the street rider (the group of which I am a part of) and, I assume, the track rider. Code brings some interesting things to the table and makes these concepts pretty easy to understand even for the novice rider.

On the other hand, as has been mentioned in plenty of other reader reviews, this book is likely the most poorly written professionally published thing I've ever read. It is *filled* with errors, inconsistencies, howlers, and non sequiturs. Not only that, but words are seemingly randomly bolded and asterisked (sometimes both at the same time) and more random words are thrown into a glossary at the end of the chapter. In a lingo-centric sport like motorcycling, why not define more things like low-side, roll-on, contact patch...things like that? Instead, we get words like:

Sail: A Piece of canvas or cloth spread to the wind to cause a vessel to move

or

Point: A particular spot

or

Dazzling: To Impress deeply. Brilliant

or

Wisdom: A wise saying or teaching

WTH? Very strange. All in all though, a good book that I, as an intermediate rider, was able to glean much useful information from. If you can get passed the irritating manner in which that information is presented, you'll probably find it helpful as well.

Editorial Review:

Straight facts about riding! A Twist of the Wrist, the acknowledged number one book on rider improvement for ten years straight, brought riders worldwide to a new understanding of vital riding skills. Uncovers and traces, action by action, the direct links between man and machine.
