For Reference and Motivation 5 out of 5 stars.

Tons of great tips make this reference guide a must-have for marathon runners. There are also inspirational tidbits to get you back on the track.

Great for the beginning/intermediate marathoner 5 out of 5 stars.

Sat and read this book all the way through in a sitting. Lots of fantastic practical tidbits for the first time marathoner, as well as those who have not quite qualified for Boston (yet). The August injury chapter was a favorite. Those sub 3 hour folks are probably reading something else anyways. His website is also quite good. Nice job, Hal!

A little dose of inspiration 5 out of 5 stars.

Hal Higdon is one of the first names I heard when I started running. He's a true expert in a sport that can benefit anyone-no matter who you are.

I'm a pretty slow runner, but I like this book because it's welcoming. Higdon has helped thousands of people finish their first marathon and this book is putting years of experience on paper.

It's friendly even to beginners, and presents very specific ways to train for a marathon. It's idiot-proof and very, very forgiving.

This book is also a big shot of motivation, as well! Every time you pick it up it makes you want to go for a run-work toward that goal. I'd recommend this book to anyone. Not just people who want to run marathons, either-because it gives tips helpful for any runner from nutrition to clothing to pace and keeping yourself mentally in the game.

Editorial Review:

As running's popularity soars, millions are taking the marathon challenge. Let Hal Higdon, veteran of more than 100 marathons, guide you through the training and preparations to ensure that you cross the finish line in triumph.

Another 5 star review 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great entry or re-entry level book. I used it summer before last to prepare for a camping trip. At the time (alas) I had decent cardiovascular fitness but knew I wanted to improve upper body strength along with core and lower body fitness. I created a work out I could enjoy.

If you are new to weights, she has a very sensible approach to starting. The models are obviously strong women but no oiled, beef-cake type poses, no ultra-buffed bods. So indeed, if that's what you're looking for, this is NOT it.

Very nice emphasis on fitness for a lifetime. I'm going to have to take a look at the cards.

Editorial Review:

With heart disease and diabetes topping the list of health hazards for women, strength training effectively reduces the risks by burning calories and bringing down body weight. Featuring two programs for all ages and levels of ability, Strength Training for Women offers a sensible, workable plan that every woman can follow for life, whether at home or in the gym.

A BRILLIANT BOOK for WOMEN who use WEIGHTS 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I LOVE this book!! Hiss Boo Sucks to all those who whine about it not including the woman's upper body. When I discovered this, after having already been totally impressed by the quality and thoroughness of the medical knowledge, anatomical detail, terminology and artwork in this book, I immediately ordered Delavier's STRENGTH TRAINING ANATOMY, the original volume, which does include both men and women, and which gives a full description of the arms, neck, shoulders and chest. The first volume of course also deals with the back, legs, buttocks and abs (as the Women's volume does), but the Women's Strength Training Anatomy covers these areas in much more detail.
Reason: because women have such different physical characteristics from men, particularly in their lower skeleton. This requires a somewhat different approach to weight training, as the muscles are attached at different angles in women than in men. I can only applaud M. Delavier for pointing this out, and for filling the gap by writing this EXTRA volume particularly for the use of women.
I was so impressed that I happily paid 3 times the price for each volume, here in Australia, as you pay in America. I bought both volumes - and then purchased more for my son and his wife.
I'm a radiographer by profession, so I see through people on a daily basis - unfortunately only the bones, however. The realistic anatomical illustrations in this volume are exactly what is required to depict the muscles used in each exercise, and to pinpoint the optimum exercises to build up whichever body part requires work. Thanks to the use of these books for just 6 weeks, I can now see and feel hard, shapely muscle developing all over my 52-year-old body. When I see an area that needs building up, I can flip right to the appropriate pages for the most effective exercises for that part. I work out my whole body every 3 or 4 days, and can feel a marked difference in muscle strength and shape by the time each training session comes due.
I have a barbell, selection of plates, adjustable dumbbells, a fit ball, and a very inexpensive weight bench with quad extension attachment. I pack this up and take it in the car with me on my mobile job assignments. I can do almost every exercise in these books with this simple equipment, and could not be happier with this book.
Women's Strength Training Anatomy is not the whole deal in itself - it is the companion book to Strength Training Anatomy; an EXTRA volume with much more detailed info written especially for women. I'm always delighted to buy 2 excellent books instead of just one!
As for the complaints that the illustrations are "sexual" and should include more clothes - well, to the pure, all things are pure. I don't see anything remotely sexy in the human body being drawn, pared down to layers of skin, fascia, muscle, tendon and bone. But it is very helpful for educational purposes.

Editorial Review:

Full-colour, detailed anatomical drawings show each exercise while it's being performed and exactly what muscles are being used (it's like having an x-ray of each exercise!). Exercises for women to use for shaping and toning the buttocks, abs, legs and back are included and a colour-coded key shows the reader exactly what muscles are isolated for each exercise. Exercise variations also feature with explanations of how they affect muscles, so readers can target certain muscles and customise their strength training regimes. The anatomical differences between men and women (relative to strength training) are also illuminated and the way that muscles interact with joints and skeletal function is described.

Editorial Review:

Power meters are rapidly becoming an invaluable part of training and racing among professional cyclists and triathletes, amateurs looking for a competitive edge, and gear fiends. For coaches and athletes, these devices offer enormous potential for targeting and timing training to realize a rider's goals. Yet few athletes or coaches understand how to interpret the data for optimal results, and few cycling resources do more than mention the possibility of wattage training. Training and Racing with a Power Meter decrypts the layers of information and explains how to begin a program that effectively integrates power. Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan have conducted extensive research and consulted with manufacturers to deliver the most sophisticated and scientific approach to training on the market, allowing riders to tap every last watt of power. The book includes cogent case studies, sample power workouts, and a chapter on the future of training and racing with these soon-to-be indispensable devices.

Not the primary source for personal trainer certification 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this review thinking it was a primary source for the ACSM PT cert. It isn't. They mention it on the ACSM website. The first book they mention (ACSM's resources for the personal trainer...) is the actual primary resource. I wanted to get this book because it was cheaper and did not have the idiotic looking picture on the front like the "resources" book does. Then I had to spend more money to go back and get the dumb-looking resources book. Apparently the book is intended for other certifications in particular like exercise testing and maybe even the group fitness teaching cert. So as for my recommendation, if you are studying for the PT certification and have some background that makes you comfortable with fitness/health knowledge and you just want to know what ACSM wants you to know to pass the test, then get the "resources" book only and save the money on this one (BTW, I have not taken the test yet so that isn't a fully tested recommendation). If you are afraid of not passing, then this study material may be helpful to you.

Editorial Review:

ACSM's Certification Review is a review manual for candidates wanting an ACSM credential including ACSM's Health and Fitness Certification, ACSM's Clinical Certification, or ACSM's Registry for Clinical Exercise Physiology. The book combines content from ACSM's Health and Fitness Certification Review and ACSM's Clinical Certification Review into one resource. Content is based on the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) found in ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription.

Solid advice, not too technical 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book for triathletes of all levels. Gale is both a gifted athlete and a talented writer. She presents the facts without getting overly complicated or high tech. She acknowledges the need for super effective time management without "dumbing down". I have been a fan of Gale's for many years due to her column in Triathlon Life magazine. This book expands on some of the concepts in her column and spells out succinctly how you can make your own plans happen.

She comes across as approachable without talking down. Yet Gale is one of the most accomplished coaches in the country, currently getting Team USA ready for Beijing. All that said, I do believe this book is best utilized by beginners....Still, it is a wonderful resource for the tri community - grab it and use it! And, enjoy.

Editorial Review:

Gale Bernhardt's training plans have helped tens of thousands of self-coached athletes reach their multisport goals. Every detail of how to train for a triathlon of any distance, an off-road triathlon, or a duathlon is here, including plenty of swim, bike, and run workouts to keep training fresh and breakthrough workouts to make training more rewarding. Bernhardt’s proven methods are the basis for each of the book’s 15 unique training plans, removing the hassle of creating a plan from scratch. This second edition includes easy tips on modifications that allow triathletes to further personalize the plans; a new chapter on 13 Weeks to a Sub-13 Hour Ironman; eight training plans requiring only five to ten hours of training per week; and five training plans to go farther. This book has a challenge to suit everyone, from beginners to accomplished triathletes, for those short on training time and those who are training for a faster time.

A state-of-the-art weight-lifting and nutritional blueprint for "skinny" guys who want to pack on muscleLet's face it, naturally skinny guys are at a distinct genetic disadvantage when it comes to building muscle mass. But with the proper advice, these "hardgainers" definitely can realize their fitness goals. In Scrawny to Brawny, the authors draw on their years of practical experience as private strength and nutrition coaches to provide hardgainers with:o A progressive, state-of-the-art program that optimizes results with shorter, less frequent workouts that maximize compound exerciseso A unique, action-based perspective on nutrition that shows how to prepare quick muscle-building meals and snacks-and how to take advantage of several critical times in the day when muscle growth can be stimulated by food intakeo Vital information on how to identify and fix any weak links in their physiques that may be precursors to injuryDesigned not only for frustrated adult hardgainers but also-with its strong anti-steroid message-a terrific book for the large teen market, Scrawny to Brawny fills a significant gap in the weight-lifting arsenal.

Editorial Review:

Along with the many benefits of leisure-class living comes obesity and its attendant ailments. In The Warrior Diet, Ori Hofmekler looks not forward but backward for a solution–to the primal habits of early cultures such as nomads and hunter-gatherers, the Greeks, and the Romans. Based on survival science, this book proposes not ordinary dietary changes but rather a radical yet surprisingly simple lifestyle overhaul.

Drawing on both scientific studies and historical data, Hofmekler argues that robust health and a lean, strong body can best be achieved by mimicking the classical warrior mode of cycling—working and eating sparingly (undereating) during the day and filling up at night. Specific elements from the Warrior Diet Nutritional Program (finding ideal fuel foods and food combinations to reduce body fat) to the Controlled Fatigue Training Program (promoting strength, speed, and resilience to fatigue through special drills), literally reshape body and mind. Individual chapters cover warrior meals and recipes; sex drive, potency, and animal magnetism; as well as personalizing the diet for women. Featuring forewords by Fit for Life author Harvey Diamond and Fat That Kills author Dr. Udo Erasmus, The Warrior Diet shows readers weary of fad diets how to attain enduring vigor, explosive strength, a better appearance, and increased vitality and health.

Great training guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have successfully trained for 2 marathons with this book and I recommend it to friends aspiring to do the same all the time. Not only does it give reality based tips, the training schedules in the back are reasonable and easy to understand. I picked my first marathon, the Shamrock Sportsfest Marathon, out of the back of the book where it recommends flat, fast courses . My husband and I followed every bit of advice and the schedule and hit our 4 hour goal at the finish line, finishing well into the middle of the pack of racers.
The only additional advice I would add to what the book tells you is to get fitted for running shoes at the on-set of your training by someone certified in Gait Analysis- this will save your knees, feet, and lower back tremendously.

Editorial Review:

Entering is one thing. Finishing with a respectable time is something else.

4 Months to a 4-Hour Marathon serves as a personal trainer for runners looking to improve their performance.
