Very thorough but a little dated 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When I bought this book I was just starting to run longer distances and hadn't been in any races, so I wasn't the target audience. If you are like me. you'll be a little unsure what your 10K pace is, for example, because you may never have run one. But if you think you're going to be in races and care about your time, I would suggest that this book is worth buying and reading even if those are still in your future.

The book is also kind of old-fashioned, based on what I've picked up elsewhere. It focuses on total weekly mileage more than seems to be in fashion these days, for example, and that approach may not work for those like me who are getting into this at an older age (I'm 46). It also talks about calling race organizers on the phone rather than looking at the race's website, which seems kind of quaint in 2007.

What's really good about it is that it covers so much. It gave me a lot of good tips for little things to remember before my first race (the San Francisco Half Marathon). It gives guidance for many different lengths of races. It talks about injuries and other issues that may come up. It even talks about balancing running with the rest of your life.

With a good update this would be a 5 star book, and even as it is, it's well worth your time.

Editorial Review:

Designed for the thousands of runners, from novices to world-class competitors, who participate--or want to participate--in the excitement of competitive running, this is the definitive book on training, with new information on the 10K and the marathon.

Necessary reading for golfers. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I wish I'd read this book 45 years ago, when I started playing golf. If you're a serious golfer -- one who wants to play your best, and works toward that goal -- you have a choice: get into a good flexibility and strengthening program, or be prepared to spend some really painful time in bed, not playing golf in beautiful weather.
This book provides what you need to lower the likelihood of encountering the pain and misery of golf-related back problems. There are no guarantees in life, but it has transformed golf for this 67-year old.

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, the official physician to the PGA Tour shares his groundbreaking research on preventing back pain and adding more yards to your drives.

It is estimated that half of all recreational golfers and one-third of all professional golfers suffer from some form of lower-back pain. Conventional wisdom suggests that the twisting nature of the golf swing is the sole culprit. But research conducted by sports-medicine specialist Vijay Vad, M.D., reveals that the swing is only one of several factors. Applying Dr. Vad’s winning combination of mind/body wisdom and medical expertise to the game of golf, Golf Rx shares his cutting-edge findings.

Complete with more than one hundred photographs, Golf Rx is a practical guide that brings the wisdom of one of America’s leading sports-medicine authorities to golfers of any level or age.

underwhelmed 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 33 people found this review helpful.

I ordered what I thought was a full size intro to yoga book and got the pee wee version for elves. I had been breathlessly waiting for my full size edition to arrive in the mail because I was so excited to be starting yoga. As I held the pitifully small thing in my hand I got so depressed because it reminded me of some bad relationships i've had in the past--big promises and nothing to back it up with. I binged on a quart of dulce de leche ice cream and a dozen black bottom cupcakes to try to numb my pain. These evil satanic deceivers must be stopped.

Too much New age, not enough stretching. 2 out of 5 stars.

A few years ago, I was in a Yoga class, but after moving to a new state, I lost the thread of regular exercise. I picked this book because I like Yoga, but I don't remember the proper stances and wanted a basic book for getting started.

What I didn't want was a dissertation on breathing, and why I have to eliminate stress from my life, and how many different forms of Yoga there are (you're only going to be teaching stances for one type of Yoga, so how about we dispense with the history and get on to the exercise?)

This book was choked with new-age mysticism and positive thinking pap. As I read it, I could feel the author trying to rein in his "crystals and incense" rhetoric so that he didn't lose people like me. At one point, I just started flipping through the pages, hoping to find a picture of a person that might mark the beginning of actual information. You know what I found? A picture of a person lying down, and a description of how to rest properly.

I don't mean to sound unkind, but I know how to lie down. I've been doing it for most of my life. I'm well practiced in that. I follow a religious regimen of lying down at least once every night, and I don't remember ever getting it wrong. Can we get to the freaking exercise!

Editorial Review:

Whether you're a serious competitor or weekend warrior, you know that proper stretching before and after your workout can improve your performance, increase your flexibility, help prevent injury, and make you feel better. But did you know that the traditional way of stretching -- lock your knees, bounce, hold, hurt, hold longer -- actually makes muscles tighter and more prone to injury?

There's a new and better way to stretch: Active-Isolated Stretching. And with The Whartons' Stretch Book,  the method used successfully by scores of professional, amateur, and Olympic athletes is now available to everyone.

This groundbreaking technique, developed by researchers, coaches, and trainers, and pioneered by Jim and Phil Wharton, is your new exercise prescription. The routine is simple: First, you prepare to stretch one isolated muscle at a time. Then you actively contract the muscle opposite the isolated muscle, which will then relax in preparation for its stretch. You stretch it gently and quickly -- for no more than two seconds -- and release it before it goes into its protective contraction. Then you repeat. Simple, but the results are outstanding. The Whartons' Stretch Book explains it all.

Part I contains the Active-Isolated Stretch Catalog, with fully illustrated, easy-to-follow stretches for each of five body zones, from neck and shoulders to trunk, arms, and legs -- over fifty stretches in all. Part II offers specific stretching prescriptions for over fifty-five sports and activities, from running, tennis, track, and aerobics to skiing, skating, and swimming. You'll also find advice on stretching for daily activities such as driving, working at a desk, lifting, and keyboarding. Part III discusses stretching for life, with specific recommendations for expectant mothers and older athletes. It also includes specific stretching exercises that could help you avoid unnecessary surgery.

Give Active-Isolated Stretching a try for three weeks. You'll never go back to your old stretching routines again.

Author got lazy 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I was disappointed with this book. The author is not specific with the muscles worked. He says an exercise works the triceps instead of which of the 3 heads it focuses on or the exercise works the abs and not if it is upper, mid or lower abs. Same thing with shoulders. The author doesn't state if the exercise works the middle delt or the rear or front delt. The descriptions of the exercises are also re-hashed. Every explanation of particular muscle groups exercises are basically the same with a few words changed out. It just seems like the author wanted to churn out this book wihout being fresh or specific.

Editorial Review:

This is not your conventional how-to book. With an emphasis on safety, it thoroughly covers all aspects of proper strength training while simultaneously debunking certain myths and misconceptions such as explosive training and sport-specific training. The book shows how to perform nearly 50 exercises with dumbbells in a safe and effective manner. Unique to this type of book is the inclusion of more than three dozen dumbbell workouts that have been submitted by approximately 24 strength and fitness professionals from across the USA.

Editorial Review:

The Core Performance phenomenon continues—with this new book that combines the effectiveness of the author’s revolutionary training system and the enormous popularity of golf. Mark Verstegen, who has trained hundreds of elite athletes here and abroad at his Athletes’ Performance Institutes, among them many PGA and LPGA golfers, now shares with every golfer the methods that have helped the pros develop their explosive power and strength.

In Core Performance Golf, golfers will discover:
  • A training program that is ideally suited to developing the golf swing because so much of the swing, like the Core Program itself, depends on rotation and movement
  • Exercises designed to help them create more torque and balance, thus adding yards to drives and precision to shots
  • A conditioning and nutrition regimen that will build strength, power, and stamina, while reducing the risk of injuries and speeding recovery time
  • Sidebar quotes and tips from famous golfers the author has worked with
