Editorial Review:

This is a comprehensive, easy to understand, guide for the man or woman who wants to build a great body or for the competition type bodybuilder. The author divides the training section into 3 parts; training for the novice or very beginner, training for the intermediate or more experienced trainee and training for the advanced bodybuilder. Within each training section, Aceto covers training schedules, repitition ranges for building muscle strength, size and endurance, set selection, and exercise prescription. Each exercise is described with a 3 dimensional drawing allowing the reader to grasp the range of motion that best fits each exercise. He also covers muscle physiology, the comparison between 2b fibers and 2a muscle fibers and the importance of developing specific training methods to maximize your gains. The delicate issue of aerobics is also covered with exact guidelines for the pre-contest bodybuilder as well as the trainee simply trying to lose some body fat. Specifically, Aceto calls aerobics, "One of the biggest myths in body fat control. Getting lean is about building your metabolic rate by building lean body mass and manipulating your nutrition plan. For most, aerobics is a way to short circuit progress, not enhance it." The nutrition section sets down exact formulas to find precise amounts of calories, carbs, protein and fat one needs to build up or lean down-whatever his or her goal. The latest supplement are also covered from creatine to glutamine and contest bodybuilders will appreciate the sodium and carbo loading techniques. Championship Bodybuilding is all about instruction. A thorough plan that will help you transform your physique!

Well written but somewhat dishonest book 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This story takes Sam Fussell from a weightlifting novice in New York City all the way to his debut in a bodybuilding competition in California. We follow the writer from the bottom all the way to complete mastery of a field.

Unfortunately, the story is not at all inspiring nor does it seem particularly honest. Sam Fussell, an Oxford graduate, who grew up as the son of two English professors, claims to join a gym out of fear of New York City and then grows towards an obsession with bodybuilding.

It seems obvious that a young graduate who has the pedigree Mr. Fussell does is looking for a project as an author and chooses bodybuilding as his vehicle to write the book. The lifters he describes as his "friends" from the gyms in New York and California are generally described by Mr. Fussell is anything but flattering terms. The author gives them ridiculous nicknames and writes of them as if they were complete imbeciles. If these people truly were his friends why can't he use their real names?

Mr. Fussell's decision to move to California and take steroids in pursuit of winning a bodybuilding competition comes across to me as more of a journalistic attempt to provide an "everyman" look at bodybuilding rather than motivated by his love of the sport. His decision to quit lifting weights for good immediately after the bodybuilding contest is the ultimate proof that his interest in the sport is not genuine.

As a novice weightlifter and a fan of the writings of Paul Fussell I thought I had come upon the perfect book for me. Unfortunately, it was fairly disapointing.

Editorial Review:

At age 26, scrawny, Oxford-educated Samuel Fussell entered a YMCA gym in New York to escape the terrors of big city life. Four years and 80 lbs. of firm, bulging muscle later, he was competing for bodybuilding titles in the "Iron Mecca" of Southern California-so weak from intense training and starvation he could barely walk. MUSCLE is the harrowing, often hilarious chronicle of Fussell's divine obsession, his search for identity in a bizarre, eccentric world of "health fascists," "gym bunnies" and "muscleheads"-and his devout, single-minded acceptance of illness, pain, nausea, and steroid-induced rage in his quest for the holy grail of physical perfection.

My opinion 5 out of 5 stars.

First of all, please excuse my English - it is not my native.
I've bought this book and really happy with this purchase, even Byrne's books were not even close to improve my skills in pool. The were commercially composed so that I had to buy more and more books, but fortunately I've found "Science of pocket billiards". Beleive me, its amazing, right now with a small practice after reading this book I beat my friends.
The best one.

Real Magic 5 out of 5 stars.

Sometimes people feel that explaining wonderful things makes them somehow less magical, as if a bit of knowledge could rub the awe off of us. I'm inclined to disagree and fortunately for me, there's a whole genre of books devoted to the related jobs of explaining the wonderful and unravelling the mysteries behind ordinary stuff.

This book stands out in that world and also in the world of books about pool. The author has taken the ordinary, sometimes despised game of pocket billiards and subjected its truths to rigorous experimentation. He built apparatus for standardizing speed and direction of balls and developed a simple device for recording where balls struck a cushion.

Koehler's attention to details is pretty wonderful in itself. Consider this: "Theoretically, the center of the tip doesn't need chalk because it makes contact with the cue ball only when it's struck dead-center. When the cue ball is struck dead-center, there's no chance of the tip slipping off and thus, no need for chalk." A tiny matter? sure. Admire the mind behind it? you bet.

The same thorough approach can be seen in chapters like

1. Equipment
2. Shooting stance and technique
3. Pocketing the object ball
4. Shot selection
5. Cue-ball deflection path
6. English
7. Positioning the cue ball
8. Rail shot
9. Combination shots
10.Bank shots

If you love the game or if you simply marvel at a job well done, this is a book for you. Any pool player will find his or her appeite for practice increased and game improved

Lynn Hoffman, author of The New Short Course in Wine from Prentice-Hall and bang-BANG, a novel from Kunati to be published in 2007

Editorial Review:

The Science of Pocket Billiards covers the entire spectrum from basics to the most advanced concepts of pool. There are 262 pages (81/2 X 11) crammed with information along with 33 photographs and 277 illustrations to help clarify the material presented. The occasional player can skim through the book and learn enough for a lifetime of casual play while a serious student of pool can study this book for months or even years and continue to gain valuable knowledge.

An Excellent Primer to Strength Training 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book goes in depth in the science, art and benefits of strength training. While this book might be too simplistic for an advanced bodybuilder/weight trainer, it's an excellent guide for people (male, female, seniors and even older children) who are beginners in the world of strength training, and a good reference source. "Strength Training" does not fall into the trap of other weight training books that focus on specific aspects of strength training. It's written to give the reader a complete overview on the benefits of strength training as well as thorough explanation on scientific background, proper techniques, guidelines, routines and programs for people of (almost) all fitness levels, and to guide the reader to the best routine that'll work for them.

The book is separated into four parts:

"Part I: The Origin of Strength" talks about the science, physiology and growth/behavior of skeletal muscle. While I found this part a little long-winded (it's 95 pages long!), and its content can rival virtually any college-level anatomy and physiology textbook on the subject, it's still a must read for a beginner to understand how a muscle works, why it grows, and how proper technique and nutrition is essental in muscle growth and development.

"Part II: Resistance Training Guidelines" discusses assessing one's strength and fitness level; an explanation on the types of exercises (Isometric, Isotonic, Plyometric, etc.); the necessity for a proper workout schedule and rest; the organization of one's workout for the individual; the goal(s) an individual may have; and on safety, injury and the body's reaction to an initial workout. Again, some of this can get a little technical and long-winded, but not so that the average high school-level reader can't understand what's being said.

"Part III: Exercise Techniques" goes into what everyone is probably looking for: how to do specific exercises. None of the exercises are too exotic; they cover all parts of the body; it's well-rounded, clear and concise. However, I found the chapter somewhat lacking on common mistakes people make when doing an exercise (there are blurbs, such as not to round your back on a deadlift). I think that's very important for the novice strength trainer, and the authors should have given more detailed descriptions or examples on common mistakes beginnners make. That said, it's a great section nevertheless.

"Part IV: Sample Programs" does what it says: give sample programs for the beginner, intermediate and advanced trainer. While the section gives plenty of examples, it encourages the reader to find a routine that works for them based on the information given. The book is good at giving that guidance.

Again the book is not meant for the most advanced weighttrainer. And it's not the type of book to simply open up to copy a sample routine or how to do a bent-over row. It's meant to be a guide for someone who's new to strength training. So the book should be read cover to cover before the reader creates a program for themselves. While the book can get technical in some areas, it's by no means a hard read. Anyone should have no trouble getting through the book in a day. Once they do, I'm confident they can fashion a workout routine that's safe, convenient (yet challenging), adaptable, and even fun.

Editorial Review:

Aimed at recreational athletes, fitness enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in strength training, this work provides current and accurate information on all aspects of muscle strength and development. A range of flexible programme options and exercises using machines, free weights and other apparatus allow the reader to customise training to suit personal preferences and individual strength goals. It is suitable for newcomers to strength training, as well as those looking to fine-tune an existing programme.

For those who consider themselves to be analytical, this book will teach you why your pool shot missed. These tips can also be applied to other areas of life.

a bit much 2 out of 5 stars.

This had some great reviews.. but it was beyond agonizing to get through.
I thought the first few pages I read on this site was a wordy intro that would clear up soon after-- it's the same all the way through.
I found myself desperately looking for a point, which led me to do something I've never found to actually work before- and am suggesting: Read this book backwards.

Must Read for anything "Competitive" .. especially pool. 5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoy pool ... but found the insights in this book apply to anything at all I do where "winning" is important. So much of what we do, if we want to bring our "A Game" to the table, is controlled by our state of mind. This is the book to read to give yourself an edge you simply can't find anywhere else to keep yourself in the game, enjoy the game at all levels, and take yourself to the next (and next and next) level. A Different Approach To Training With Lots Of Interesting Information 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book "Power Factor Training" has a lot of interesting information in
it. Though the overall approach here is not something I would use exlusively,
most of what is written is definitely thought provoking and that is why I felt
it deserves five stars.

There's a lot of interesting information on the MISinformation that has been
around bodybuilding for years (for example, the myth that you can actually
shape your muscles beyond your genetics such as shaping one`s biceps peak).
Also there is a strong focus in this book on avoiding overtraining and
the need for proper recovery between workouts.

This book focuses on the use of short range partials as their primary
component of training. In my own training I prefer the X-Rep training
approach (advocated by Steve Holman and Jonathan Lawson). X-rep (extended
reps) training is done using partials AFTER doing full reps.

I could see using a purely partial rep workout occasionally, but not as
my sole approach. Holman and Lawson, also developed POF training (Positions
of Flexion) which is diametrically opposed to the approach taken in Power
Factor Training. They also have a scientific basis for their approach (much
of it is on the web and they have written several e-books their approach).

To me, the X-reps approach seems to be the best of both worlds because
you are strengthening your body in many different synergistic patterns of movement.
While this may not be necessary for building mass, it's a much more athletic approach. If
pure mass is all you want perhaps pure partial rep training is a good fit for you.

One of the best things I've gotten out of the Power Factor book is
the idea of trying to find the right weight/rep scheme to perform in
a certain amount of time and to try to keep a record of that in order
to chart one's progress..

In spite of the fact that I obviously have a different approach to my own
training than the authors prescribe, I still think this book is well worth
reading because there is a lot of valuable information that is well
detailed and explained in clear language.

Editorial Review:

Bodybuilding experts Peter Sisco and John Little present a revolutionary new system for building maximum muscle in a minimum amount of time. Power Factor Training emphasizes very heavy overloading of the musculature and long rest periods between workouts, resulting in amazing gains in size and strength. This astounding guide details the proven physiological principles of the program, answers specific training questions, and outlines a concise workout schedule that is sure to benefit beginning, intermediate, and advanced bodybuilders.
