From the Author 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Hello readers and fellow lifters,

As the author of this book (co-author, actually, along with Jim Stoppani, PhD, one of the foremost authorities in the field of exercise science), I thought I'd share with potential readers why we wrote Stronger Arms & Upper Body the way we did...

Our goal for this book was to present both basic and cutting edge training advice in the most efficient, reader-friendly format possible. We didn't want to beat around the bush with unnecessary information that won't really help you in the gym. From Chapter 1, we dove right into the information you can use in the gym today.

In the first part of the book, we explain how to design your own training program, but in Chapters 11 and 12 we went ahead designed full training programs, and even individual workouts, for those who would rather not design their own programs. That makes this book good for anyone - beginning lifters to advanced gym rats - looking to build muscle, lose bodyfat and improve overall health.

The reason for having a chapter devoted solely to individual workouts (Chapter 12) was to cater to those who don't want to do an entirely new program - these individuals (who often tend to be advanced lifters) are happy with their existing programs, but still like to try a new workout every now and then to keep things fresh.

Chapter 10 is truly for the advanced lifter, as it's all about high-intensity, cutting edge techniques you can employ to take your workouts (and your physique) to the next level. Hardcore gym rats will love the novel techniques included in this section.

I hope everyone who reads this book will at least find a few useful tips and techniques to add to their workouts for better results in upper body training, whether the goal is to add muscular size, strength, definition or all of the above.

Thank you for considering our book.

It Really Works! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have been following the workout plan for two months now. I followed her suggestions of eating a lowfat diet, aerobic activity, and the weights (dumbbells.) My arms, shoulders, thighs, and calves all look toned now. I have a little more work to do on my stomach, but it is smaller than it was two months ago. Just as it took time to get a stomach, I know it will take time to go away. Like one of the other reviewers said, it takes me longer than 20 to 30 minutes, but that's o.k. because the results are worth it.

Excellent work out for busy Moms 5 out of 5 stars.

I just ordered a second copy of the book because the workout charts I have had taped to my wall for the last 8 years are looking tatty.
It is an excellent workout for someone who wants to stay in shape and does not have a lot of time. I have never injured myself following her directions, and I am quite strong.
When I first started (after the birth of our third child) I used the book while my husband was at work. He did not know I was doing this, but after a couple of weeks noticed that I had really begun to spring back into shape!
I agree with her assessment on which Gym machines are most useful, meaning which ones work muscles that are harder to exercise using free weights. Her suggestions are always geared to helping you make the most of your time.
Her dietary suggestion are pre-Atkins Renaissance (i.e she goes higher on carbs and lower on fats than today's trends do), but it is really the exercise principles and workouts you should buy the book for.

Editorial Review:

In this fully-illustrated manual, Joyce L. Vedral guides readers through four steps to a fit body: Learning the Moves, Establishing a Muscle Base, Sculpting and Defining, and the Finishing Touch. By proceeding through these clearly defined workout levels, beginners get a safe and effective workout with weights.

excellent theory book 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

The book includes a description of free weight and other exercises, but the primary focus of the discussion of different excercises is Nautilus exercise equipment. Having said that, the book does an excellent job of discussing the theory behind setting up both strength and cardio training programs. It does a particularly good job of explaining and contrasting the various strength training approaches such as circuit training, high intensity training, and slow training. The book is a bargain for the price!

Editorial Review:

Develop a lean and strong physique in just 30 minutes a day! Building Strength & Stamina will teach you how by using the same principles used successfully in conditioning programs of 10 NFL teams and the U.S. Navy. The unique approach combines both strength and endurance training to build muscle and cardiovascular fitness--fast.

Studies show strength gains of 50% after just two months using this approach, and exercisers training both their muscles and cardiovascular system improve more than when they train for either strength or endurance training alone. The two-month and six-month programs of circuit training and high-intensity training with free weights, machines, or both will lead to major gains at home or in the gym.

The results are in: Building Strength & Stamina is your guide to a more muscular, fatigue-resistant body in less time. For most fitness-oriented people, there's no better way to train.

Great guide for setting realsitic targets 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a natural weight trainer I felt this book was very useful for setting realistic targets for results. It not only suggested dimension targets based on natural growth, but also indicated the type of poundages that would be lifted to achieve these goals. Great resource. A must buy in the ocean of such books available.

A different kind of myth-based exercise program 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Brawn is better than many of the books available discussing exercise with weights, but that doesn't make it a good book.

Mr. McRobert's basic premise is that the weight training programs you see in glossy magazines are designed for genetically gifted, heavily drugged people, who want to refine an already existing physique. They aren't appropriate, or even helpful, for non-steroid-users looking to gain size and strength in the first place. So far so good. Sing it from the mountains.

The problem with the book is that it's just another myth-based exercise program. The book lacks footnotes, and does not appear to be grounded in science. Mr. McRobert's recommendation of extremely long inter-workout rest periods doesn't make a lot of sense, physiologically. He likes basic, heavy exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench-presses, but he appears to have happened on this conclusion by accident, rather than by reference to any body of data. The plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

The reason the book is worth reading is that it's something different from the 4-1 splits you see in the glossy magazines, and those are pretty much a proven bad idea for most people. Mr. McRobert has something to say. It isn't very good, but it's better than the standard fare.

Editorial Review:

Most bodybuilding books are alike. They are typically a collection of photographs of bodybuilding superstars, together with training routines that never work for the average person. Brawn is totally different and directly challenges most contemporary bodybuilding advice. Most importantly, Brawn focuses on the techniques, routines and strategies that actually work for typical bodybuilders.

This book is ideal for the non reader, the person who neither has the time no patience to sift through chapter after chapter looking for an author's main idea. Understanding Bodybuilding Nutrition and Training is a follow up to Aceto's Championship Bodybuilding. It contains, in a unique question and answer format, the answers to the most difficult to coprehend and often conflicting informatio on training, building mass, muscle recruitment, rep speed and nutrition. I arranged this book in a simple 'Q and A' format to make it easy for the reader to get exact answers to questions regarding losing fat, holding muscle while dieting and building mass." Excellent Resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
62 of 62 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for myself and my husband after we gave up our gym membership. My husband was not as sure with himself on how to use free weights but he has excelled with this book.

The book is in a great format. It is spiral bound and you can stand it up to keep a good eye on the exercise your are doing without worrying about the book closing on you.

The author has used excellent photographs and descriptions of how to do each exercise and what muscles each works. There are also good sections on general health, nutrition and how to personalize your own workout.

This is of course and excellent book for beginners but for myself (intermediate) I have found it a good refresher that presents ways to make each exercise a bit harder as you progress.

A great purchase!

Editorial Review:

Weight Training for Beginners is a full body workout for either home or gym featuring step-by-step full color instructional photos and a unique hands-free design. All exercises can be done using the minimum of special equipment, and the book presents two fully comprehensive programs of exercises, one for those with no prior weight training experience and one for those looking to improve their skills. The book includes information on stretching and warm-up, safety, and cardiovascular training, in addition to a complementary eating program. You'll trim fat, build strength and muscle tone, and feel better regardless of your age or athletic ability.
