Excellent exercise program design, based solidly on the science of kinesiology 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The Authors do an amazing job of explaining the routines and the science behind them.

This book is for everyone who is interested in seeing results from their workouts and breaking out of their counter productive exercise routines. In short this book is an exercise plateau buster.

Highlights:
- Covers the science and principles of effective training (Written in laymen's terms so that anyone can understand the benefit of correctly training the body's energy systems.)
- 6 week maximum muscle workout, including diet plan
- 6 week full-scale fat-loss phase, including diet plan
- Plus, chest and arm specialization

This book will more then get you started; it takes the guess workout out of creating a routine that works, plus provides a solid plan from workouts to diet and is also a very interesting read.

Editorial Review:

Few people - even top fitness experts - ever learn the concepts presented in this book. So, if you're a beginner, consider yourself lucky. You will be far ahead of the game from the start, and that will translate into quick increases in muscle size and strength. If you are an experienced lifter, be prepared to make the best gains of your life.

Top notch writer, no nosense accurate advice (review former Physiology Teaching Fellow) 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I like Stuart McRobert in general. His books are well-organized, to the point and contain accurate information without hype. He is also realistic about what can be achieved and not achieved based on your genetics. At the same time, he is enthusiastic and very motivational.

With respect to scope, this book is geared toward how to train, training cycles and related issues and building a good foundation. Although it is well-written, it doesn't have many diagrams and doesn't include detail on exercises. For this, I recommend Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body and Starting Strength. These are REALLY... the only two books you need.

My background is that I have a graduate education in biochemistry, psychology and physiology. I was a Physiology Teaching Fellow, researcher and a personal trainer at one time. Currently, I am reviewing some of the new books out there and this author is particularly impressive. If you are going to get one of the Stuart McRobert books, I would get Build Muscle Lose Fat.... However, they are complementary and in my opinion, you would be cheating yourself not to get both. Build Muscle Lose Fat focuses more on proper technique, general training guidelines, etc.

One interesting inclusion in this book is a calculation scheme for ideal symmetry. This is great for setting realistic goals and I also like that this author is drug free and favors a natural approach. As a biochemist, I think his nutrition guidelines are very good, but I think he is overly cautious. For example, he doesn't recommend protein powders, but doesn't give a compelling argument why they are not a good idea. While it's true most people could get by with milk, I think protein powders and other supplements can be useful to hard-gainers or people that don't eat right.

If you are a hard gainer, then this book is for you and so is Starting Strength and Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body.. especially the latter two! From Scrawny to Brawny is also very good, but a distant second as a one point reference. However, it's worth getting for the training tips and tricks for people with long limbs, that are prone to injury in the shoulders, knees, etc.

Editorial Review:

This is the fully updated second edition of the sequel to Brawn, the book that created a bodybuilding revolution. This encyclopedia offers the key to training success. By acknowledging each person's individuality, this book teaches people precisely how to become their own expert personal trainers. Whether readers are male or female, beginners or very advanced, young or not-so-young, want to train at home or in a public gym, this book offers outstanding guidance.

Nice for the pictures, but otherwise not clear 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Cheng Man-Ch'ing is a cult figure in taiji, with a fiercely loyal group of followers. Certainly he was a master, and this book provides excellent photos of him doing the form. But taiji is all about movement and feeling, and still photos can't convey the quality of movement or hint at the internal mechanics of the art. So if you want to use the book to learn the form, forget it. If you have a good teacher, and want the book as a source of inspiration, by all means, buy it. If you're a Cheng Man-Ching fan, keep in mind that he talked and wrote about taiji, but much of his power was derived from nei gong, including the small and great heavenly circulations, that he kept a closely held secret, for reasons that remain unclear. Temper what he says with the understanding that he held back as much as he offered, and you won't be frustrated by doing the form over and over without getting anywhere near the benefits Cheng derived. Bottom line is that the book is an artifact and a good one, and it was one of the first books in English on taiji. As a learning tool, it is limited.

Editorial Review:

The Chinese secret for youthfulness, health and long life lies at least partly in T'ai Chi, the ballet-like calisthenics they've practiced for centuries. This rhythmical art stresses slow breathing, balanced and relaxed postures and absolute calmness of mind. The practice itself need take no more than ten minutes a day. This book is a complete step-by-step manual for the beginner that will enable anyone to master the sequence of thirty-seven postures that make up the T'ai Chi solo exercise.

For the hardhead in all of us 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Hopefully, Kelso's wisdom won't sail over the reader's head like a frisbie. This is a short, and very funny read, strongly imbued with East Texas culture. Through stories (partly truth and partly fiction) of his days as a teacher, with a powerlifting club (the Wampus Cats), Kelso imparts some fundamental and sound truths about lifting weights. He offers different routines that would benefit most lifters depending on their varying goals. Although he doesn't get much into the technique of the exercises (this isn't a book for rank beginners), most of the routines are fairly simple--which is part of their value (assuming you want to get strong, that is). All laughing aside, Kelso obviously knows a few things about weightlifting. Along the way, he skewers a lot of goofy ideas--most deriving from the bodybuilding world. All in all, a very enjoyable book.

Editorial Review:

O.K., so we weren't able to convince Paul to include a good recipe for chicken-fried steak, but what he did serve up is a humorous but insightful account of effective basic powerlifting training. Don't look here if you think your next gains come from going triple-ply or your next win depends on shopping for the right federation. Do stop by though if you think a little horse sense is just what's called for when it comes to basic training for powerlifting. 96 pp.

Editorial Review:

Before Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Reeves, or Charles Atlas, there was German-born Eugen Sandow (1867-1925), a muscular vaudeville strongman who used his good looks, intelligence, and business savvy to forge a fitness empire. "Sandow the Magnificent" is the story of this first showman to emphasize physique display rather than lifting prowess. Sandow's is also the story of the earliest days of the fitness movement, during which he established a worldwide chain of gyms, published a popular magazine, sold exercise equipment, and pioneered the use of food supplements. David L. Chapman explains the popularity of physical culture in terms of its wider social implications, and how Sandow encouraged the fitness craze that continues today by making exercise fashionable. As the first superstar in his field, Sandow also pried open some surprising cracks in the Victorian wall of prudery. After many of his major public events he gave private "receptions" wearing little more than a G-string. "Sandow the Magnificent" also includes many of the strongman's revealing photographs, which were anxiously sought by both male and female admirers. This new edition has been revised and enlarged with an extensive afterword that includes much unpublished information, new photographs of Sandow and his contemporaries, and an updated index.

Only for those that care about the history of the gripper 2 out of 5 stars.
19 of 29 people found this review helpful.

This book can be described in one word: pointless. Seriously, I was looking to read this book and get tips about grip workouts using their gripper product. For over 50 pages you get the history of the gripper, how they progressed, myths, etc. WHO CARES!!!
There were some good tips towards the end, but these same tips I found for free in many locations, especially at www.gripboard.com. I even emailed IronMind asking for a good book about gripper only workouts; their reply was this book. When I replied back to them of what I am saying now, the PhD author of the book actually replied. He was not pleased at all to hear what I had to say, but hey the truth hurts.

Editorial Review:
