Great Drill Book 5 out of 5 stars.
136 of 137 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for drills to improve you or your athletes speed, agility, or quickness- look no further.

The book starts out with a short chapter on preparing for the drills followed by another short chapter on "needs analysis" (which shows you how to evaluate the need for a speed, agility, and quickness program).

The rest of the book from there is the "meat" of the book: three sections of drills, one for speed, one for agility, and one for quickness. Each of these sections is loaded with great pictures of the drills along with the purpose of the drill and an explanation of how to do it.

The book ends with a 6th Chapter on sport-specific programs. Here the reader is given routines for all the different sports such as volleyball, karate, baseball, etc.

All-in-all I found this to be a very nice resource for drills- drills for really just about any sport. To boot, the size of the book is such that you can toss it in a gym bag and take it with you. Other sports resources I liked include The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution if you suffer from plantar fasciitis. Happy training!

Editorial Review:

Not only are modern athletes larger and more muscular than their predecessors, but they also move with a swiftness and power never seen before. Training for Speed, Agility, and Quickness is the workout guide and DVD package you need in order to perform a step ahead of the competition. What elevates this book to become the ultimate training resource is the bonus DVD, ideal for both athletes and coaches. It allows you to see exactly how to perform key tests and execute the best and most complex drills from the book. Sample training programs are included for the following sports: - Baseball and softball, - Basketball, - Soccer and field hockey, - Volleyball, - Football, - Tennis, - Netball, - Cricket, - Rugby, - Australian rules football,

Editorial Review:

Now in its third edition, Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning is the most comprehensive reference available for strength and conditioning professionals. In this text, 30 expert contributors explore the scientific principles, concepts, and theories of strength training and conditioning as well as their applications to athletic performance.

Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning is the most-preferred preparation text for the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam. The research-based approach, extensive exercise technique section, and unbeatable accuracy of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning make it the text readers have come to rely on for CSCS exam preparation.

The third edition presents the most current strength training and conditioning research and applications in a logical format designed for increased retention of key concepts. The text is organized into five sections. The first three sections provide a theoretical framework for application in section 4, the program design portion of the book. The final section offers practical strategies for administration and management of strength and conditioning facilities.
  • Section 1 (chapters 1 through 10) presents key topics and current research in exercise physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, biomechanics, endocrinology, sport nutrition, and sport psychology and discusses applications for the design of safe and effective strength and conditioning programs.
  • Section 2 (chapters 11 and 12) discusses testing and evaluation, including the principles of test selection and administration as well as the scoring and interpretation of results.
  • Section 3 (chapters 13 and 14) provides techniques for warm-up, stretching, and resistance training exercises. For each exercise, accompanying photos and instructions guide readers in the correct execution and teaching of stretching and resistance training exercises. This section also includes a set of eight new dynamic stretching exercises.
  • Section 4 examines the design of strength training and conditioning programs. The information is divided into three parts: anaerobic exercise prescription (chapters 15 through 17), aerobic endurance exercise prescription (chapter 18), and periodization and rehabilitation (chapters 19 and 20). Step-by-step guidelines for designing resistance, plyometric, speed, agility, and aerobic endurance training programs are shared. Section 4 also includes detailed descriptions of how principles of program design and periodization can be applied to athletes of various sports and experience levels. Within the text, special sidebars illustrate how program design variables can be applied to help athletes attain specific training goals.
  • Section 5 (chapters 21 and 22) addresses organization and administration concerns of the strength training and conditioning facility manager, including facility design, scheduling, policies and procedures, maintenance, and risk management.
Chapter objectives, key points, key terms, and self-study questions provide a structure to help readers organize and conceptualize the information. Unique application sidebars demonstrate how scientific facts can be translated into principles that assist athletes in their strength training and conditioning goals.

Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning also offers new lecture preparation materials. A product specific Web site includes new student lab activities that instructors can assign to students. Students can visit this Web site to print the forms and charts for completing lab activities, or they can complete the activities electronically and email their results to the instructor. The instructor guide provides a course description and schedule, chapter objectives and outlines, chapter-specific Web sites and additional resources, definitions of primary key terms, application questions with recommended answers, and links to the lab activities. The presentation package and image bank, delivered in Microsoft PowerPoint, offers instructors a presentation package containing over 1,000 slides to help augment lectures and class discussions. In addition to outlines and key points, the resource also contains over 450 figures, tables, and photos from the textbook, which can be used as an image bank by instructors who need to customize their own presentations. Easy-to-follow instructions help guide instructors on how to reuse the images within their own PowerPoint templates. These tools can be downloaded online and are free to instructors who adopt the text for use in their courses.

Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Third Edition, provides the latest and most comprehensive information on the structure and function of body systems, training adaptations, testing and evaluation, exercise techniques, program design, and organization and administration of facilities. Its accuracy and reliability make it not only the leading preparation resource for the CSCS exam but also the definitive reference that strength and conditioning professionals and sports medicine specialists depend on to fine-tune their practice.

A Complete Off-The-Bike Fitness Program! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've always read in cycling magazines that one should lift weights but the information given is never specific enough and rarely are diagrams shown. This book gives reasons behind the exercises and exactly what part of your body is benefiting, and how it will help your strength on the bike. The book is really well laid-out and easy to understand. I just started the program and am looking forward to dropping my riding buddies on our local climbs in no time.

Editorial Review:

Since the publication of the first edition of the only cycling-specific weight training book on the market, time spent in the gym has become a standard part of every cyclist’s training schedule. This new edition, with updated material on core strength and nutrition, brings together the most current research on strength building and the most recent and effective equipment innovations. Authors Ken Doyle and Eric Schmitz explain clearly how strength training in the weight room translates to endurance and power on the road. How should an athlete fit weight training into an already demanding cycling program? How does the approach to lifting change from the beginning of the season to the end? Which exercises are best on what days? How many repetitions are needed? Doyle and Schmitz address all these questions and more in easily grasped, lucid language. More than 60 exercises are illustrated and described in detail, and ten sample programs guide riders through their season.

Complete Solution for Increasing Strength 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

A great holistic approach to increasing strength. You get warm-ups with foam roller and mobility exercises, 4 day a week upper/lower body split routine, nutrition suggestions and even a chapter on the "muscle between your ears". I plan on finishing the 16 week routine by end of October and then repeating it next February.

A fantastic book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is outstanding. Eric has generated a program that will help nearly anyone get stronger, no matter where you're starting out at. The warm-ups themselves are worth the price of the book, and the program itself is amazing.

The exercises are clearly described and the pictures really help illustrate the intent of each exercise. Overall, a very, very good product.

Editorial Review:

Most of the 23 million American men who lift weights do so to get bigger; unfortunately, many of them are going nowhere with watered-down bodybuilding routines that don’t help them actually get stronger. Eric Cressey’s cutting-edge four-phase program, featuring constant progression, variation, and inspiring goals, keeps you focused on increasing strength along with muscle mass, helping you achieve the fittest, most energetic, and best-looking body you’ve ever had-with fewer hours at the gym.

not as expected 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is not for someone who has no access to machines. A lot of the book is devoted to the use of gym equipment. I was hoping for more instruction when there are no machines..or trainers....a basic book for beginners. This is not that book.

It's an important pick for any considering strength training efforts past 50 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Strength training has many advantages, from decreasing symptoms of arthritis and diabetes to increasing endurance and weight loss, but most strength training titles focus on the under-40 crowd. STRENGTH TRAINING PAST 50 offers a range of workouts and programs designed for the over-50 set, offering a range of routines illustrated by black and white photos of over-50 exercisers. It's an important pick for any considering strength training efforts past 50, and is recommended for any library catering to health and fitness patrons of all ages.

Editorial Review:

Strength training is an equal-opportunity exercise system; studies show that anyone who tries it can benefit. Muscle loss is inevitable through the years if you're sedentary. But no matter how old you are when you start, strength training has nearly immediate benefits: more muscle mass, more strength, less fat. This book gives older exercisers all the information they need to get started, including advice on testing for strength and how to pick a qualified personal trainer.

Thanks Bowflex Body Plan 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We bought a Bowflex used and didn't know where to start. This book gave us a plan to use. Starts off with only a few exercises to master the form and get used to. Then after two weeks adds two more, etc. etc. Gives different routines for people in good shape looking to work on certain areas. It also offers dieting advice!!! Before and after stories with pictures!!! Nice book!!!

Very Motivating and Easy Read 5 out of 5 stars.

I am almost finished with this book and I must say that I expected to drift away page after page. I was suprised that it kept me motivated and it makes me a believer that it really is not that difficult to get the results I want if I stick to a very simple routine!

Almost like the user manual 3 out of 5 stars.

This pretty much has what is in the user manual you get with the machine. There are a few other exercises in it and more backgroung info. It's good to get if you've lost your manual or if you want a sturdier, hardback copy.

Editorial Review:

This officially-endorsed book from the makers of Bowflex® will help you maximize your workout time and get the most out of your investment in just 6 weeks. Merge the recommended Bowflex® routines with Dr. Ellington Darden's guidelines on eating, hydrating, and resting, and you'll be well on your way to getting the results you've always wanted.

Another 5 star review 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great entry or re-entry level book. I used it summer before last to prepare for a camping trip. At the time (alas) I had decent cardiovascular fitness but knew I wanted to improve upper body strength along with core and lower body fitness. I created a work out I could enjoy.

If you are new to weights, she has a very sensible approach to starting. The models are obviously strong women but no oiled, beef-cake type poses, no ultra-buffed bods. So indeed, if that's what you're looking for, this is NOT it.

Very nice emphasis on fitness for a lifetime. I'm going to have to take a look at the cards.

Editorial Review:

With heart disease and diabetes topping the list of health hazards for women, strength training effectively reduces the risks by burning calories and bringing down body weight. Featuring two programs for all ages and levels of ability, Strength Training for Women offers a sensible, workable plan that every woman can follow for life, whether at home or in the gym.
