I was disappointed with this book. The author is not specific with the muscles worked. He says an exercise works the triceps instead of which of the 3 heads it focuses on or the exercise works the abs and not if it is upper, mid or lower abs. Same thing with shoulders. The author doesn't state if the exercise works the middle delt or the rear or front delt. The descriptions of the exercises are also re-hashed. Every explanation of particular muscle groups exercises are basically the same with a few words changed out. It just seems like the author wanted to churn out this book wihout being fresh or specific.

I ordered what I thought was a full size intro to yoga book and got the pee wee version for elves. I had been breathlessly waiting for my full size edition to arrive in the mail because I was so excited to be starting yoga. As I held the pitifully small thing in my hand I got so depressed because it reminded me of some bad relationships i've had in the past--big promises and nothing to back it up with. I binged on a quart of dulce de leche ice cream and a dozen black bottom cupcakes to try to numb my pain. These evil satanic deceivers must be stopped.

A few years ago, I was in a Yoga class, but after moving to a new state, I lost the thread of regular exercise. I picked this book because I like Yoga, but I don't remember the proper stances and wanted a basic book for getting started.

What I didn't want was a dissertation on breathing, and why I have to eliminate stress from my life, and how many different forms of Yoga there are (you're only going to be teaching stances for one type of Yoga, so how about we dispense with the history and get on to the exercise?)

This book was choked with new-age mysticism and positive thinking pap. As I read it, I could feel the author trying to rein in his "crystals and incense" rhetoric so that he didn't lose people like me. At one point, I just started flipping through the pages, hoping to find a picture of a person that might mark the beginning of actual information. You know what I found? A picture of a person lying down, and a description of how to rest properly.

I don't mean to sound unkind, but I know how to lie down. I've been doing it for most of my life. I'm well practiced in that. I follow a religious regimen of lying down at least once every night, and I don't remember ever getting it wrong. Can we get to the freaking exercise!

It's a great resource for me. I am a woman who goes to the gym for fitness and strength training. Even though the gym provides a trainer, who has explained these things to me, the great illustrations in this book really help me to visualize how the muscles work and I now understand and can work them even better.

Bought this book used from amazon. It is an exceelent and easy read that will improve your game immediately. I am still plowing through it but already I see improvement. Some of the photos could be a little sharper but none are so bad that you can't determine what it depicts. Highly recommend it.

When this book came out 30 years ago it raised the bar for pool and three cushion billiards instruction manuals. Earlier books, such as Ray Martin' 99 Critical Shots, were badly flawed by the gross inaccuracies of their diagrams. Byrne introduced large and accurate scale diagrams, even including parabolic paths for cue balls struck with draw or follow. The last half of the book covers the elegant game of 3-cushion, which is now enjoying a renaissance. It contains by far the best, and nearly the only, explanation of "the diamond system" for calculating multiple rail bank shots. Even a rudimentary familiarity with it should help virtually any pool player. The entire book is leavened with Byrne's characteristic dry wit. I've been recommending this book to students for decades.
