Target oriented strength training 4 out of 5 stars.

If you are serious with your triathlon training, no matter the distance you aim for, you need to do efficient workouts. The gym sessions are too often disregarded. Reading this book you will not only get knowledge on why you need strength training. You also get plans for what to do, and how.

Strength Training 2 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Most traditional weight lifting programs are too general to benefit triathletes. This illustrated guide offers 60 exercises that build strength for swimming, biking, and running by replicating the muscle usage patterns specific to triathlon events. The exercises are organized by sport and muscle group, allowing triathletes to quickly find the best exercise for their unique training needs. Included are sample seasonal plans for each race distance, along with instructions on adapting training plans to individual needs that make it easy to develop a personal strength training program.

Just one question for Fitzgerald 3 out of 5 stars.
20 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I have one question for Fitzgerald and those who rave about this book and the author's mixture of triathlete training and the proven philosophies of coach Jack Daniels: Do the great African runners (Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco) do a lot of cross training or triathlons? I think you all know the answer to that is a resounding no. They run. They run multiple times daily. They run in groups that push each other in each run. They have fun. They live and eat together. They run on dirt all the time and avoid injury. They wear light minimalistic training shoes that allow the foot to actually move and spread out properly. They run constantly on hilly or mountainous terrain. But they don't cycle, and they don't spend any time in swimming pools or the weight room at Gold's Gym. They improve their running by focusing on their running and enjoying the spirit of community competition. It is part of their culture. Americans and Europeans can't compete in the distance events because they will not train in this manner. Americans run on asphalt, generally avoid mountainous terrain, wear thick clunky shoes advertisers have convinced them are necessary to protect their heels, strike with their heels with each footstrike, and then wonder why they get hurt and aren't as fast as their international competitors.

To combine the principles of a great triathlete's training with the running philosophy of Jack Daniels may be "revolutionary" in the sense that no one has put such a combination forward promising improvement for runners, but that may be because it is a combination that overlooks the fact that the worlds best runners don't use any such training ideas. Cross-training may give a brief mental break from the demands of running, but many people run because it is the simplest and least expensive way to exercise: No gym membership needed, no bicycle equipment (big $), no need for a pool or the danger of open water swim areas, you just put on a good pair of shoes and head out the door. If cross training were the answer for major running improvement, everyone in the world would have been cross-training for decades. However, the world's best runners do very little, if any, cross training.

Days later now, and I will modify this review to say that the sections in this book about the psychology of running and how to train the brain to push through fatigue are well done, and the portions that focus on specific exercises to develop core strength are also quite useful and easily incorporated into even the least experienced runner's training. There are good sections on racing and how to prepare for competition, whether your goal is first place or a PR. These are the book's strength. I stand by my evaluation that cross training is emphasized a bit too heavily in some sections, but don't throw out the baby with the bath water, as they say, and miss the useful parts of the book because of the cross-training "revolutionary" revelations.

Editorial Review:

Based on new research in exercise physiology, author and running expert Matt Fitzgerald introduces a first-of-its-kind training strategy that he's named "Brain Training." Runners of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels can learn to maximize their performance by supplying the brain with the right feedback. Based on Fitzgerald's eight-point brain training system, this book will help runners:

- Resist running fatigue - Use cross-training as brain training - Master the art of pacing - Learn to run "in the zone" - Outsmart injuries - Fuel the brain for maximum performance - And more

Packed with cutting-edge research, real-world examples, and the wisdom of the world's top distance runners, Brain Training for Runners offers easily applied advice and delivers practical results for a better overall running experience.

It's a great book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have to laugh at some of the reviews, like the one that gave one star and says "don't waste your money". It's 10 bucks! Makes one wonder what axe they have to grind. Not surprisingly, the reviewer promotes a competing book.

I find that many of the reviews are misleading. For one thing, this isn't a beginner's book. It describes 50 different exercises in good depth, with instructions and photos, and it contains around 30 different workouts.

The photos are not too small or too blurry to see. My eyesight isn't great but I had no trouble at all. By keeping them on the small side, the book could be much more compact, which is helpful during my workouts.

The background information runs from basic to advanced. I am no novice, yet I picked up quite a few new things I hadn't known previously.

For $10, it's hard to go wrong with this book. I researched quite a few and this is the one I like best.

Editorial Review:

This is not your conventional how-to book. With an emphasis on safety, it thoroughly covers all aspects of proper strength training while simultaneously debunking certain myths and misconceptions such as explosive training and sport-specific training. The book shows how to perform nearly 50 exercises with dumbbells in a safe and effective manner. Unique to this type of book is the inclusion of more than three dozen dumbbell workouts that have been submitted by approximately 24 strength and fitness professionals from across the USA.

Editorial Review:

Along with the many benefits of leisure-class living comes obesity and its attendant ailments. In The Warrior Diet, Ori Hofmekler looks not forward but backward for a solution–to the primal habits of early cultures such as nomads and hunter-gatherers, the Greeks, and the Romans. Based on survival science, this book proposes not ordinary dietary changes but rather a radical yet surprisingly simple lifestyle overhaul.

Drawing on both scientific studies and historical data, Hofmekler argues that robust health and a lean, strong body can best be achieved by mimicking the classical warrior mode of cycling—working and eating sparingly (undereating) during the day and filling up at night. Specific elements from the Warrior Diet Nutritional Program (finding ideal fuel foods and food combinations to reduce body fat) to the Controlled Fatigue Training Program (promoting strength, speed, and resilience to fatigue through special drills), literally reshape body and mind. Individual chapters cover warrior meals and recipes; sex drive, potency, and animal magnetism; as well as personalizing the diet for women. Featuring forewords by Fit for Life author Harvey Diamond and Fat That Kills author Dr. Udo Erasmus, The Warrior Diet shows readers weary of fad diets how to attain enduring vigor, explosive strength, a better appearance, and increased vitality and health.

finally 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is an important book for any woman who is starting or continuing strength training. I bought it after I saw the BodyWorks exhibit last year. Anatomy books before this one usually included the male physique. As women's muscles are different, it is helpful to have these illustrations and explanations. It is also an excellent teaching tool for trainers. I recommend it highly to girls and women of all ages. Very useful in getting to know your body.

Editorial Review:

With information on strengthening and toning the legs, buttocks, abs, and back, Women's Strength Training Anatomy provides full-color, detailed anatomical illustrations of exercises for these hard-to-shape areas. What makes this book unique is that readers can see the muscles at work during each exercise, like an X ray of the body in motion.

Are there definite anatomical differences in the way men and women should build their bodies? According to the best-selling author and illustrator of Strength Training Anatomy, the answer is an overwhelming yes! Exercise variations based on a woman's unique anatomical features are also covered, helping to isolate muscles and make each exercise more effective.

Make your workouts work harder for you! If you work out to strengthen and shape your body or if you help women get stronger and more defined, this is one book you need for understanding the female form and getting the most from your exercises.

Mostly motivational 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm training for my first marathon and was given this book by my cousin who has run multiple marathons. I should say that I am in college and have been distance running since I was around 13. I run for fun, not really for competition and the idea of a marathon intimidated me because it seemed like such a far leap from what I am used to.

This book provides a lot of motivation but in ways I did not expect. I didn't realize upon getting this book that it was not only targeted to first time marathoners but also to people who really don't run. I found the provided training schedules to be a bad fit for my personal fitness. The novice schedules were too slow to start, and the advanced schedules were too intense. I also come from running 6, sometimes 7, days a week so only running 4 days is a problem for me.

Ultimately, this book is a great marathon book and I really enjoyed reading it. However, I do think it is targeted to the non-runner and wish it was a little bit more advanced.

Editorial Review:

As running's popularity soars, millions are taking the marathon challenge. Let Hal Higdon, veteran of more than 100 marathons, guide you through the training and preparations to ensure that you cross the finish line in triumph.

Better choice, even for Road Cyclists 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I'm a runner and cyclist, but I primarily ride. I had the Cyclist Diary in one hand and this one in the other.

They are both by the same author, and they are pretty much the same, except the Triathlete's Diary offers you 2 exercise log sections vs. only one in the cycling.

Even if you are a cyclist only, I recommend this one for that reason (2 rides a day or weight training). Other than that, its the same..at the same price.

Different areas of the book include:

Diary (80% of the book)
Section to write down bike measurements (Road and MNT)
Grid paper for Test Results
Blank Tables for data entry (ie Best Routes info)
Extra PULL OUT Chart section with Weekly Training Hour and a 12 month calender (blank to enter data in)

Hope that helps

Editorial Review:

Keeping a training diary helps athletes build confidence and stave off threats to performance: burnout, injury, illness, and overtraining. This simple, comprehensive diary makes it easy to record every component of triathlon workouts. Details of each swim, bike, run, crosstraining, or strength workout can be entered, with ample space for notes on the route or other variables. Users can consolidate training data, track progress, and reshape goals throughout the season with this useful book.

Great for plan ideas, not a lot of explanation (I'd rate it a 3.5) 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for more access to training plans. The variety of plans and number of different fitness levels it offers is great. The key in it is great and fairly user friendly. I found that the plan I chose based on my "fitness level" according to the book seems a little ambitious so I found myself editing a lot of the plan. Also, some of the training plans require knowing where a 5-6% grade hill is that takes at least 1 min to bike up. I don't really know where one is and so that makes some of the workouts unable to do or extremely limiting. I also find some of the swimming workouts get to be very redundant, just adding on one extra hundred yards to the same workout every week. More importantly, I feel that for a beginner swimmer, these workouts require a lot of yardage and perhaps pushing too hard, too soon. I have been a competitive swimmer for 14 years so I can tune these practices to the ability of the swimmer, but if my boyfriend would've picked up the book and tried to do some of these workouts I think he might injure himself (shoulders). Overall, great book to get ideas, but some of the workouts are a little difficult to make it easy to fit into your schedule and location.

Editorial Review:

Great training guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have successfully trained for 2 marathons with this book and I recommend it to friends aspiring to do the same all the time. Not only does it give reality based tips, the training schedules in the back are reasonable and easy to understand. I picked my first marathon, the Shamrock Sportsfest Marathon, out of the back of the book where it recommends flat, fast courses . My husband and I followed every bit of advice and the schedule and hit our 4 hour goal at the finish line, finishing well into the middle of the pack of racers.
The only additional advice I would add to what the book tells you is to get fitted for running shoes at the on-set of your training by someone certified in Gait Analysis- this will save your knees, feet, and lower back tremendously.

Editorial Review:

4 Months to a 4-Hour Marathon serves as a personal trainer for runners looking to improve their performance.
