Too Many Extras 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I ordered 3 of these and I've just finished with the third one. It worked pretty well for me at first, but eventually I started to run out of room in the strength training section. I could have done without all the extras. Each page has a paragraph at the top (Research Report, Quick Quiz, Training Trivia, Nutrition Nugget, etc.), which I never bothered to read. Also there are areas at the bottom of each page for "Mind-Body Notes", "Nutrition Notes" and "Daily Wrap Up". The "Nutrition Notes" section is so small that is really of no use for logging meals. I never entered anything in any of these sections. I would have preferred that all these extras were taken out and more lines were added in the strength training section. There isn't a place to write the actual date on each page either. I used the "Morning Info" box to write in my weight, but I never figured out what it or the "Daily Rating" boxes were actually for. Maybe I should have read the pages at the beginning of the book? I tore them out and tossed them right away to make the book lighter. I'm going to try the Body Minder log this time.

Excellent Reference 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book has an extensive amount of information, race charts, pacing charts, training guides for runners of various levels and for various events (5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon). Special chapters on marathon recovery, mental aspects of running, racing strategy, and so on. I've had this book for over a year and find myself turning back to it again and again. Well organized and easy to flip through and find the information that I need (sometimes with the use of the very handy index).

Very thorough but a little dated 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When I bought this book I was just starting to run longer distances and hadn't been in any races, so I wasn't the target audience. If you are like me. you'll be a little unsure what your 10K pace is, for example, because you may never have run one. But if you think you're going to be in races and care about your time, I would suggest that this book is worth buying and reading even if those are still in your future.

The book is also kind of old-fashioned, based on what I've picked up elsewhere. It focuses on total weekly mileage more than seems to be in fashion these days, for example, and that approach may not work for those like me who are getting into this at an older age (I'm 46). It also talks about calling race organizers on the phone rather than looking at the race's website, which seems kind of quaint in 2007.

What's really good about it is that it covers so much. It gave me a lot of good tips for little things to remember before my first race (the San Francisco Half Marathon). It gives guidance for many different lengths of races. It talks about injuries and other issues that may come up. It even talks about balancing running with the rest of your life.

With a good update this would be a 5 star book, and even as it is, it's well worth your time.

Editorial Review:

Designed for the thousands of runners, from novices to world-class competitors, who participate--or want to participate--in the excitement of competitive running, this is the definitive book on training, with new information on the 10K and the marathon.

Good, but not great 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a fine book and tells some cool thing about bicycle powermeters. It introduces some usefull concepts, like the normalized power, TSS. You'll understand some capabilities of the limit-less tool called powermeter. It shows how to use an powermeter beyond the ordinary. You'll learn some nice stuff.

But the author doesn't give away their gold. It looks like their real secret - the training sessions - are kept away. They begin to show some exercise sessions for some kind of purpose, but they don't show you a lot. I felt like they were writing an teaser, not the full movie.

They also tell a lot about the Cycling Peaks software, which is good, but not all that great. I prefer to combine the Cycling Peaks with the original SRM or Powertap softwares to get the most juice.

They tried to keep this book from being an big ad and they pretty much accomplished that. I didn't get angry, nor got crazy to go buy their software after reading the book.

Editorial Review:

Power meters are rapidly becoming an invaluable part of training and racing among professional cyclists and triathletes, amateurs looking for a competitive edge, and gear fiends. For coaches and athletes, these devices offer enormous potential for targeting and timing training to realize a rider's goals. Yet few athletes or coaches understand how to interpret the data for optimal results, and few do more than consider the possibility of wattage training. Training and Racing with a Power Meter decrypts the layers of information and explains how to begin a program that effectively integrates power. Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan have conducted extensive research and consulted with manufacturers to deliver the most sophisticated and scientific approach to training on the market, allowing riders to tap every last watt of power. The book includes cogent case studies, sample power workouts, and a chapter on the future of training and racing with these indispensable devices.

You CAN do it! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I first heard about this book when I began training earlier this spring for the Chicago Marathon (2006). The national AIDS Marathon Training Program, the group I am training with, uses Galloway's program, and I wanted to cover all my bases during training. This book provides a great deal of mental support for the beginning marathoner, and I believe would be most beneficial to those who have never run regularly before. My only complaint is that it could use even more nutritional advice. All in all, though, it's a strong reference book to have around during training.

Editorial Review:

Marathon running is a sport that many consider too daunting, better in the viewing than the doing. Olympian Jeff Galloway dispels such notions in a book that takes the mystery — and misery — out of distance running. Marathon! shows how just about anyone can run a marathon and, given the right attitude and training, finish the race. Galloway has designed a low-mileage marathon training program that has been used by over 10,000 people with a 98 percent success rate. The book includes the latest information on workouts, form innovations, pace charts, prediction tables, and motivation strategies.

Great book for new swimmers and experienced swimmers. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoyed reading this book and wanted to take the time to reivew it. I am an experienced swimmer, swimming for many years, coaching age group and master's teams over the years. I have also taught swimming at many levels. I tried to look at this book from the eyes of a beginner and found it very helpful. The book covered such topics as how to pick out a suit and goggles all the way to pool etiquette. How glad I am that Emmett covered that! As an experienced swimmer I found the workout information invaluable. The workouts are very good and I found the workout schedule or cycle very apppicable to my level of swimming. The more competitive swim cycle or season information helped me map out a plan for the coming year. So I can confidently recommend this book to the beginning swimmer and the more competitive swimmer.

Editorial Review:

Drop the Days of the Week 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I guess I'm being picky. Okay I know Sunday is really the first day of the week but for those of us tracking miles by week (especially important for building your bases so you don't over do it) you usually can't break the weekend apart. Sometimes due to your time schedule you can train long on Saturday and sometimes you have to do it on Sunday. Let's say your building for a marathon. You do 5 - five milers during the week and a 15 mile run on Sunday. Next week you do the same but have to do the 15 on Saturday. According to the book you did 25 miles one week and 55 miles the next. How's that for tracking weekly miles? The better training log's leave the days of the week blank so you can fill it in. And yes I know you could always cross out the days of the week in this log and rewrite it but why should you have to?

Editorial Review:

Effective Approach to Lifestyle Fitnes 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was recommended this book by a guy from my church who lost something like 50 lbs on the program. I checked it out and was impressed that the program was both simple and yet also up to date with contemporary fitness research. It takes much of what I've read in books on fitness and nutrition and what my trainer has told me and puts it into a program that is simple to follow and easy to remember. It is probably not for the intense athletes or serious body-builders, but for those who want to stay or get into shape and stay there while still living a relatively normal and busy 21st century lifestyle, it is quite good.

Editorial Review:

A Week's Worth of Exercise in a Single Workout?

"People don't believe it. Then they try it. Then they recruit their friends."

So says Adam Zickerman about Power-of-10, the revolutionary slow motion fitness system that will transform your body and the way you think about exercise, rest, and nutrition forever.

Imagine a fitness program so powerfully effective, you can:

  • Work out 20 to 25 minutes, once a week, for maximum strength, fat loss, and fitness
  • Follow a nutrition plan that doesn't permit hunger
  • Rest your way to success
  • Eliminate painful injuries, no matter what your age or experience
  • Finally begin a program that even the busiest, most stressed-out person can follow with hardly a break in schedule or change in routine.
