I have purchased quite a few books on beginner triathlon training and this is the best one I have found to help the first timer go from 0 to Sprint distance tri. Very concise and easy to follow.

Editorial Review:

Great athletes make difficult moves look effortless with a combination of skill, strength, and balance. Traditional conditioning builds a fitness base, but modern sports training takes into account athletic movement patterns. Athletic Body in Balance is the first guide of its kind to show you how to train for smooth, fluid movement and prevent muscle imbalances, mobility restrictions, stability problems, and injuries.

Physical therapist and sports conditioning expert Gray Cook has proven the effectiveness of his approach through the performances of athletes in the NFL, NBA, NHL, WNBA, and Reebok® University's sports training system. Cook's methods will help you identify functional weaknesses; correct imbalances; explore your potential; and refine sport-specific movement skills such as jumping, kicking, cutting, and turning. You will see where conditioning is breaking down and how to get your body back on track.

Whereas other books concentrate on maximizing your strengths, Athletic Body in Balance focuses on exposing and overcoming your weaknesses to form a foundation for long-term training gains. Learn how to maintain what you gain and build on your improvements. Make this comprehensive assessment tool your training guide. Prepare and repair your body for ultimate athletic performance with Athletic Body in Balance.

Everybody can benefit from a bit More Fire 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Having read many books on running over the years on all aspects of running I can sincerely say that "More Fire - How to run the Kenyan Way" is the best book on running I have read.
Already been a fan of the previous edition, this edition is even better and pushes the knowledge and insight about Kenyan running to the next level.
Unlike other books on running, which focus too much on the scientific and technical aspects of running "More Fire" is a result of in-depth analysis and evidence of how the Kenyan elite athletes train, how they live, how they race and their fundamental values, attitudes and behaviours, which drives them to excel and dominate in the world of running.
I strongly recommend the book to all the aspiring runners, athletic coaches or those involved in governing athletics, it is a must read. Many valuable lessons can be learnt from how the Kenyan's do it.

Editorial Review:

For many years Kenya has been producing some of the finest runners the world has ever seen. But just how they have become the world's greatest running nation is something that has been intriguing fellow athletes and sports fans for just as long.Divided into four parts, "More Fire" is a motivational volume that gets to the root of why and how Kenyan runners are the world's best. It begins with a look at running in Kenya, the landscape, the physical conditions, and the people. The second part surveys the training methods and techniques most commonly used. The third presents profiles of past-and-present influential runners allowing readers to gain further insight into their methods. And the book ends with a discussion on how readers can adapt and incorporate these top-flight training techniques and practices into their own lifestyle.

Not just for weight lifters 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because I am a middle-aged newbie to the sport of lifting and thought a 5 star motivational book would serve me well. This book was written with weight lifters in mind but it's common sense wisdom applies to all aspects of life. Mr. Strossen's writing is very accessible and clear. I've read a few motivational books and this one is hands down the best. Although I come from the same town as the author we have never met and this is an honest "from the heart" review.

A quick shot of well-backed motivation 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is like a little devotional for weightlifters. That phrase sounds precious and fragile, but the book isn't. This is rock-solid motivational theory that will help you lift harder, day after day after day. Each short article (there are sixty in all) gives you a new tool to shift yourself into gear. This book is just the thing to start you on your way to more bulk, more power, more definition - whatever you want, this book helps you achieve it. When you're in a slump, it helps you pick yourself up. When you're moving, it helps you keep yourself going. The best thing is, it's always crystal clear that the force making this happen is YOU; the book just gives you the tools.

Buy the book. Use the tools. Grow into your goals.

Super squats by Randall J Strossen 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Super Squats is timeless. It gives down to earth information on the only three things that will make you bigger and stronger. They are;
1.Progressive overload
2.Getting enough food
3.Rest for growth and addaptation.

These are the cornerstones of getting big and strong and they are as true today as they have always been.

I think one of the problems with today's training magazines is that they seem to put more emphasis on food supplements and training sessions that are done by bodybuilding champions that are not only genetically gifted but also take drugs. These same bodybuilders also promote the food supplements but fail to mention the drug use.

I train people of all ages and all genetic abilities and I can tell you that using the principles laid out in super squats works!

For all begginers out there, cut through the hype and get squatting.

David Morgan

Editorial Review:

We wrote the book on personal transformation: John Doe was an ordinary guy: Had a wife (girlfriend) and while he worked (was in school) full time and had a couple of hobbies, he also wanted to be bigger and stronger. John had no special genetic gifts and no interest in drugging up; plus, he had to keep the training routine and the accompanying diet very simple as well as extremely effective. Enter SUPER SQUATS, and six weeks later, the 150-pound, somewhat shaky version of John Doe had been replaced by a 180-pound fire breather who knew he could walk through walls, because he'd just done it. SUPER SQUATS is the definitive book on the classic 20-rep squat routine . . . it's been around for almost 75 years and it's the system that turns scarecrows into musclemen. Whether you're trying to outgrow your size small shirts or are hunting for a win at World's Strongest Man, here's the winning recipe when it comes to bulking up. 112 pp.

This book is exacty what it says: a training diary, very important. I opted for the online version from TrainingPeaks because I can download my ride data.

Editorial Review:

This smart training diary makes it easy for cyclists to record every component of cycling workouts. Details of each cycling, crosstraining, or strength workout are accommodated, with ample space for notes on the route or other variables such as weather conditions. Power, heart rate, and exertion readings are critical indicators, as are other personal vital signs including sleep, fatigue, stress, and soreness. For athletes who are designing their own annual plan, Cyclist's Training Diary provides a guide to planning the entire season.

Good, easy read. 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a pretty good, easy read. It doesn't hit you with a lot of scientific mumbo-jumbo that you'll never understand. Instead, it gives you a basic, common-sense approach to improving the mental aspect of your game. The author shows how the physical world and the emotional world are related, and how being stronger mentally can help you perform better in your sport.

It is not geared towards any one sport, but rather it is geared to athletes in general.

A training and coaching gem! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Extremely helpful "how to" book for becoming mentally tough. Unlike other sports pysche books, this one tells you very specific things to do to improve concentration, focus and most important, resiliency. Think of this as a cookbook of recipes for creating the appropriate mental response at the right time.

Editorial Review:

Loehr, author of the bestselling Mental Toughness Training for Sports, has trained more than 100 world-class athletes, from tennis ace Martina Navratilova to boxer Ray Mancini. This book--based on Loehr's toughening techniques--as well as the most scientific studies available--includes a whole new range of programs and goals for any athlete, professional or amateur. 20 photos.

serious training for anyone wanting to become a serious rider 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book on mountain biking fitness training, not a book on technique is that's what your after....i have been riding mountain bikes for 2 years now and have improved my fitness over this time[also lost 25kgs somewhere along the way!!]...After riding socially i found myself wanting to do more and so i entered a race, and have now started racing on a regular basis. I found i had hit a plateau in my fitness, and not able to pay for a full time coach[or justify the cost of one to my wife]... i figured i needed a book to gain some information.

I found this book is an alternative to anyone who can't afford a coach I have read through it twice now [the second time with a highlighter pen and sticky tabs to note important sections]...

The book offers me a clear and simple training program to adhere to...and offers valuable info relating to pre race preparation...Improving lactate thresholds was a major area i needed to work on and having riden with my new training program i find i am leaving my riding buddies behind whom would normally beat me...I find that my fitness level is improving daily and the better i feel on the bike the more fun i have...I ride around 230kms a week these days[80% on single track], and i have more energy than i have ever had before[and i am 42 yrs young heading towards 21]

To sum up, this book has taught me to become my own trainer/coach. I find myself with more energy at the times i need it[especially race times] which was always a lottery ticket before...if you are a serious mountain bike rider or a beginner wanting to become one, i suggest this book is for you[on the other hand if you are one of my competitors disregard all of the above comments]

Thanks Joe Friel

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

One of the dirty secrets of the fitness world is that for all the talk about the importance of stretching, many athletes and other fit people don't bother with it. It's hard to gauge the benefits, and it seems as if the time could be better spent running, lifting weights, or perfecting sports skills. This sentiment is expressed by Dr. Bob Arnot in the foreword to "The Whartons' Stretch Book," and he says that the Whartons changed his mind. He went to them with a stiffened hip that he thought needed surgery, but after a regimen using the active-isolated stretching technique, his flexibility in that hip had increased 40 percent.

Active-isolated stretching is very different from what your high-school gym teacher made you do. Rather than holding a stretch for a half-minute, you hold it for just two seconds. This prevents the muscle from activating an instinctual braking device to keep itself from overstretching. Traditional stretching forces that braking to occur, and the Whartons think that's not only counterproductive, but dangerous. If you force too deep a stretch while the muscle is doing all it can to keep itself from being stretched, something's got to give. And a torn muscle will repair itself with scar tissue, ultimately making that muscle less flexible.

The Whartons--a father-and-son personal-training team who've worked with many pro athletes and Olympic medalists--show you how to use their stretches to prepare for dozens of sports, from aerobics to wrestling. Nonathletes get an entire section of the book, which describes stretch routines to get your body feeling better after prolonged driving, sitting, standing, and word processing. The routines are a bit on the longish side--20 minutes or more--but it doesn't seem like much time when you think of how long you have to live in your body, and how much better it will feel if you keep it supple and flexible. --Lou Schuler
