Great Beginner 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a great book; it has lots of information for a beginner. I like the illustrations a lot, one of my favorite chapters that usually is not covert in other books was the "Rules of the Road" Great book!!

Editorial Review:

The Complete Sailor takes the reader from the first sail to a mastery of small-boat handling. Weaving his writing around 600 drawings by noted marine illustrator Kelly Mulford, David Seidman has created a book in which each double-page spread invites the eye and communicates volumes of information. The Complete Sailor goes beyond other learn-to-sail books to cover navigation, boat design, and seamanship. Encyclopedic in scope yet warm in style, it conveys the magic as well as the techniques of sailing. Among the other topics covered: anchoring, ropework, rigging, weather, fog, squalls, currents and tides, rules of the road, trailering, and working the winds. The book is a gentle introduction for those just starting out, and a guide to new horizons for those who already sail.

Required reading for ASA108 certification 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book looks disappointing at first because it is a thin expensive hardcover, but it is worth the money. There is very little fluff and the content is well structured and to the point. It covers most things necessary to prepare your boat for offshore sailing including tool lists, weight distribution, polars and VMG, secants and many other useful tips. Lots of pictures, tables and diagrams.

Offshoore Sailing: 2000 passagemaking tips 5 out of 5 stars.

Offshore Sailing: 200 Essential tips 4 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to all novices and many experienced offshore sailors to prepare for the unexpected problems that you need to address or avoid especially when you are so exposed to the extremes of nature, and completely disconnected from any immediate help. Lots of good lessons learned and references.

Editorial Review:

In a book that is sure to become a classic, internationally respected boatbuilder, yacht manager, and delivery skipper Bill Seifert shares his hard-won solutions to a host of boat design, construction, and equipment issues and seamanship dilemmas. Unlike other books on the subject, Offshore Sailing doesn't just tell readers what to do for safe and comfortable passage making; it shows them how to do it with clear, step-by-step instructions and nearly 200 detailed drawings and photographs.

Editorial Review:

In Ship Modeling Simplified, master model builder Frank Mastini puts to paper the methods he's developed over 30 years at the workbench to help novices take their first steps in an exciting pastime. You don't need the deftness of a surgeon or the vocabulary of an old salt to build a model. What you need is an understanding coach. Mastini leads readers from the mysteries of choosing a kit and setting up a workshop through deciphering complicated instructions and on to painting, decorating, and displaying finished models--with patience and clarity, not condescension. He reveals dozens of shortcuts: How to plank a hull "egg-shell tight"; how to build and rig complicated mast assmeblies without profanity; how to create sails that look like sails. . . . And along the way he points out things that beginners usually do wrong--beforehand, not after they've taken hammers to their projects.

Ship Modeling Simplified even includes an Italian-English dictionary of nautical terms, the key to assembling the many high-quality Italian kits on the American market.

Model building is fun, and not nearly as difficult as some experts would have you believe. Here is everything you'll ever need to get started in a hobby that will last a lifetime.

When planning a circumnavigation one has three choices: 1) Do not plan and accept the extreme dangers of circumnavigation; 2) take a year or more and plan using all available nautical publications, charts, electronic navigation systems; and 3) read and use the outstanding information provided in "World Cruising Routes." This publication will save you time and more important provide excellent tips for short and long passages across the oceans of the world. A History Major's Review 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a child pirates fascinated me, but as a college student studying history I found that serious forays into the historical truth of piracy were few and far between. My boyhood fascination and adult inquisitive nature both found outlets in Under The Black Flag. The book is written with the general population in mind but has enough for historians to gain further insights into the lives of pirates.
The book deals primarily with the pirates found in the Caribbean and North America, but gives brief accounts of pirate activity in the rest of the world as well. It profiles such figures as Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Anne Bonney, Black Bart, and Calico Jack among others. The book even has a section on famous fictional pirates, reminding us of literary classics such as Long John Silver and Captain Hook.
If you have ever wanted to learn more about Pirates, this is the book for you.

Editorial Review:

ffers this rollicking account of the golden age of piracy, full of history, anecdote, and adventure. Here are true stories of Blackbeard, Henry Morgan, Captain Kidd, and of the female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read. "Entirely engaging and informative . . . a witty, spirited book."--Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post. Maps and photos.

Editorial Review:

Where were you a year ago ?
What were you doing 2 years ago ?
What were you feeling 3 years ago ?
What were your dreams 5 years ago ?

"THE 5 YEAR JOURNAL" will enable you to journalize and plan the next 5 years with what you want, what you have felt, and where you have been. Year by year your entries add to the total summary of your feelings and events, until, on one page you can look back at the past years, up to 5 years - day by day - thought by thought - experience by experience.

We tend to be hard on ourselves, not always giving ourselves the credit due for what growth and change has occurred. Journalizing in this Journal and in the Workbook sections, over a 5 year period will memorialize what was happening. Then having 5 years to look back upon, at one glance, can give us a more accurate reflection of what did or did not happen in the past.

Recording a relative reflection creates an accurate record of memories that we can then use for assessment and personal growth. This Journal will be a reminder and support, of where we have been and where we want to go with our lives. Even if you already journal, "THE 5 YEAR JOURNAL" can be effective in addition to what you are currently doing. This Journal can be a quick and easy tool for highlights and learning from hindsight. "THE 5 YEAR JOURNAL" has a unique design that allows you to start journaling any day of the year.

With the passage of time we gain a different perspective. Time is a healer and what was once hard or unbearable can now make more sense, giving us a clearer picture. Recording and tracking our lives in this Journal can actually bring relief, clarity, joy and laughter. You can also use the MonthEnd Summary, Quarterly Questions, Year End Favorites, The Best and Worst Things That Happened to Me, Q and A Year End, Create Your Own Topic, and Year End Summary as meters to track experiences at a glance.

Imagine sitting down, just you or with friends, remembering that favorite movie or favorite song, reading about what you were doing, what you were feeling, or what was happening in your life on a specific date. With this Journal there will be a first hand account of what was, what had happened to you in your life. With the distance and time in-between, you may have a new experience with your past and create a more rewarding future. Imagine passing this Journal on to a friend or family member so they could know you and your history. They could feel your joys and successes, and experience your pains and sorrows.

This Journal can also be used for personal or business items, recording important dates, future deadlines, anniversaries, and more. Dates important in your future can now be pre-recorded for a manner of easy reminding.

The most important idea to remember about "THE 5 YEAR JOURNAL" is that you now have a quick and easy-to-use tool that can be an asset for your well being. It can enhance and assist you in the many ways that you choose to use it. It can be fun.
